I thought we could kick off GF week with a happy story that all can get behind and embrace. Sing songs together over a wonderful happening that we will get to enjoy soon...

The demise of Geelong.

For a few years at least...

We have seen our rise built on the backs of top 40 ND picks that we have nailed, and avoided trading out where we could.

Geelong on the other hand...

Top 40 ND picks

2012 ND16 Thurlow

2013 ND16 Lang ND36 Jansen

2014 ND10 Cockatoo Trade ND21 Stanley

2015 Trade ND9 & ND28 Dangerfield Trade ND17* Henderson

2016 Trade ND15* Touhy ND26 Parfitt ND40 Stewart

2017 Trade ND19 & ND30* Ablett ND22 Fogarty ND24 Kelly ND36 Constable

2018 ND15 Clark

2019 ND16 Stephens ND19 De Konig Trade ND37 Jenkins

2020 Trade ND12 & ND15 & ND18 Cameron ND20 Holmes ND33 Neale

*Future Pick

Mature Age Trade

Failed Pick/Player not at club

Successful Pick

The 4 kids inside the top 40 in the last two drafts have played 13 games, of which Holmes has played 12 - a perfectly fine defensive HBF (another way of saying he doesn't have any tricks).

They lucked out with Stewart in 2016 and that is it, there have been a few role players like Miers, Henry, and Smith that they acquired later in the draft process or UFA.

They potentially got a new start with Kelly going to WCE, but turned that 3 picks in the top 20 windfall into a lead up 'flanker' forward that needs a bigger bodied FF beside him to function.

Their list is aging and has very little below to replace those that are to move on soon. They have epitomised the idea of constantly topping up and relying on your stars to win you big games - but when those stars retire...

List? Meet Cliff.

And yet Steven Wells gets continually lauded in the footy media.

FYI

When we belted Cats last week they had 1 player 21 YO or younger, Melbourne had 7. Great signs for our future. I think it will be 5+ years until the Cats, potentially, will be a force. Suspect Brian Cook (pretty smart fella) saw the writing on the wall and jumped to a list with huge upside - the big bucks Carlton would have thrown at him helps :) Mind you, he still has to deal with the most disfunctional Board in the AFL

I suspect Brian Cook was genuinely intending to retire but was "encouraged" to go to Carlton by the AFL in the same way Peter Jackson was "encouraged" to come to us. That being the case, I also wouldn't be surprised to see the AFL assist Carlton by encouraging a respected coach to join them. I don't think it will be Clarkson, though. I expect him to be "encouraged" to be Tasmania's coach from 2023 onwards.

As to Geelong, three premierships in 5 years relatively recently trumps any criticism of their more recent list management.

I've heard from a consistently reliable source that Michael Voss will be the new Carlton coach.

Been wildly reported today that unless Clarko has a late change of heart, Voss  will be announced senior coach.

Honestly, good luck to him. The fish is rotten at the head over there.

I think the whole fish and the whole club is rotten.

I reckon for about the first time in living memory I feel confident in saying we will win one before they do.

I hope you are absolutely confident about 9.50 pm Saturday.

Not entirely. They do have a good list so a decent coach who commands respect from the players could get them up to speed relatively quickly.

Think you missed my point. They are a rotten club. End of point.

Just confirming Constable as a failed pick and has been delisted, and of course Clark traded.

Kelly needs to go from yellow to red on your list.

Hey, let's not limit this just to the Cats, how about our old friends the Hawks??

Check out the BnF results.  some lean years ahead and not much youth coming through.  with hardly any picks in the draft, and no trades done, 2022 will be a wasted year

Hawthorn Hawks: Peter Crimmins Medal
  • Tom Mitchell (161 votes)
  • Blake Hardwick (126)
  • Jaeger O'Meara (121)
  • Dylan Moore (101)
  • Chad Wingard (100)
  • Sam Frost (95)
  • Daniel Howe (83)
  • Changkuoth Jiath (79)

Congratulations to Sam Frost in coming 6th in Hawthorn's B&F. I suspect if he'd stayed at Melbourne he might only  have played a few games this year. (I could see him as the first replacement tried after Tomlinson was injured, to be replaced by Petty after about three games of Frostball.)

Frost is uncoachable

There is a reason he was jettisoned.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the

We'll break down the Match SIM against North Melbourne and wrap up the preseason with insights into training and our latest recruits.
