Are you sure? I thought he was out of contract. My mistake.

Either way, a third round pick would suffice. And I doubt we would prioritise him over Cerra.

I'll need to double check but I'm pretty sure he is??

Good to know, I would put Gunston above Cerra in terms of targets.

I like Gunston and think it would be a screwed recruit.

But right now personally, if I'm choosing between an up and coming star of the future in Cerra or a guy who's got a bung back at 29 years of age then I know who I'm selecting.

From Sam McClure article.

While Cerra is said to be extremely impressed with Melbourne’s presentation, he is also excited at the proposition of playing alongside Carlton duo Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh.

Presentation aside, we finished the season on top of the ladder. Was that the presentation? aha

All this we’ve got no picks to get the deal done is my favourite.

That is it in a nutshell... no point presenting if a deal could not be worked out... I'd imagine it will not have anything to do with a straight deal between Melbourne and Freo - that appears to be self-evident.

Disagree, I want to win a flag in the next three years. Gunston would be perfect for our quick turnover game plan - he is so smart. Mids we have.

I don’t doubt that at all.

It's his body that worries me the most.

They must be planning on getting rid of T Mac if the Gunston stuff is real

Would free up a lot of coin too

Or TMac, still unhappy about last year and perhaps playing second fiddle to Brown, wants to move on....

Tmac has gone on record to say his form was bad and he understood where the club was coming from and that they’ve been nothing but wonderful to him when a trade couldn’t be done. And he’s played every game since. So I doubt he’s still unhappy.

For the record, I don't think it's likely he requests a trade, but I wouldn't be totally shocked.

Also, not sure those comments really mean much tbh. I don't recall any player who requested a trade coming out during the season and saying 'Yeah nah, I'm super unhappy, I'm outta here the first chance I get. Just hopefully get my contract value up rest of the season and then I'll burn this place'....

T-mac's form has also dropped off. Perhaps this year was the best possible outcome and both parties are being realistic about next year

would you pay $700k for TMac?

He's not going anywhere unless he takes a 2 x $500k deal

He's played the bulk of games this season, we're in the window - would be surprised if he seeks a trade.

Losing that for Gunston is a big risk for the Dees, esp with ? over Weid.

It’s pretty simple

Melbourne receives: Cerra

Freo receives: Our rolled gold assurance not to come back and raid their cupboard again during our next 5 powerhouse years

We could offer them an option to deal with us, if Jacko does decide to go home, at any time in the next 5 years

I'd have thought our currency for Cerra wont be revealed until after the seasons done (obvious I know).

However, I'd be looking at the upcoming players who play similar roles to our stars, especially in the middle. Players like Chandler and Sparrow who've shown they could be playing regular midfield minutes and forging their careers in a team without Clarrie, Trac and Jack... even Harmes and Brayshaw, if they want serious midfield minutes.

To clarify here, are you suggesting Freo would possibly entertain any of Chandler, Sparrow, Harmes or Brayshaw for Cerra?

Not particularly.

More about who may want to seek opportunities elsewhere (due to limited opportunity at MFC) that might in turn give us more currency to get Cerra. I've no idea what freo would want.

Gonna be interesting to see how we approach this. From what we know there are no impending departures.

Those fringe players that may want to go (Chandler, Baker, Lockhart, Bedford, Smith, etc.) are not worth much.

Can't see Freo wantng to deal in the futures market?

What are we missing?

We of course don't have to deal directly with Freo in futures dee-tox. Packaging this year's ~34 and next year's first-rounder (let's say 18) to a club for which such a deal makes sense, possibly gets us something in the range of 12-15. Freo might then accept that and one of our semi-fringe players as a list replacement.

We are also likely to have an exit or two, and one which could net us something in the mid to late 20s. If we off-loaded ~34, I imagine we would then want to keep a pick in this range, but the extra picks also help us to split and move up the order, or as a further pick-swap incentive for Freo. I think we can get something done.

Not advocating it one way or the other - but if our list management team view Cerra as a key ingredient, then I'm not at all worried about future salary cap issues. And who knows, Fremantle still need to fix their key forward mix, and with Rory Lobb possibly out the door we may well see Weideman head directly out west.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
