I had a dream that we kicked 87 goals and 21 points which equates to 543. The odd thing was that in my dream I saw the scoreboard and that’s exactly what it said, 87 goals 21 points: 543. Apparently I’m a maths wizard but only in my sleep. Anyway, I think we’ll actually win this one easily. Bulldogs hero Ugly-Hogan to be held to just the one possession. Brown will kick 52 of the 87 goals.

I definitely don’t want us to lose. But I also don’t think that if we lose a close hard fought game it’s the end of the world.

It could very much impact our chances of finishing top 4, which in the current climate could make life very difficult. Need to absolutely maximise the games we play in Melbourne, could get quite challenging afterwards travel wise.

Plus, we desperately need to turn around and solidify our form IMO. It's been shaky at best over the last 5 weeks and I'd much rather us head towards finals with a full head of steam (and a settled forward line) than continuing our up and down performances.

Can't just expect things will get better later on, have to make it happen, starting tonight.

If we win tonight I’m booking my flights for the GF.
Tonight we’ve got our best chance to seal away the minor premiership and at the same time put our firm credentials on the league premiership and to really hush the naysayers who still think we’re brittle and will eventually cave.
Gotta put some work into Bont and Naughty if we’re to have a comfortable win but I’m still going into this one pretty confident.

Sure but who will kick the first goal. Thinking of putting a bet on. Is it Brown.

I didn’t see that in my dream. But if I were a betting man, which I am, I’d put it on Tom Sparrow.

Got the feeling bb is going to remind us all of what he can really do.

Its gonna be torrential rainfall, if BB fires tonight it will go down as one of the great efforts of the season

We will know tonight whether we really are contenders for a flag this year. Surprisingly feeling bullish about this game…

A. We’ll match the intensity of Footscray.

B. The game will be played in wet conditions.

Dees by 16 points.

Footscray is a VFL side. I'd rather we match the intensity of a top-tier AFL side.?(tongue-in-cheek emoji hidden by a mask)

Nevertheless, I agree about the intention of the first point. And the rain radar shows a lot of rain heading our way. Currently in the far west of the State. Not sure if it will be here in time to affect the game, though. If it does get here, yep, very wet.)

Surely some fine french wine for the occasion as well

I was going to mention that (and the obligatory apéros) but thought it might sound a bit snobby. ? GO DEMONS!

I hope BB can have a big game

In terms of the game I have little confidence - our mids have been poor and I think we're going to get exposed there tonight

Just want us to play 4 quarters to be honest

I dont like to get political but hell i dont care im getting older.

Am sitting in the gong hospital after my vacination and appreciating all the hard working health workers.

And then i think about those protesters....geez.

Good thing for footy.

Bring it home dees....dogs have had their moment... thus years ours.

Tx for the forecast. Not sure but it may favor us.

In my view we are yet to be so considered  but win tonight I may begin to believe

We're top of the ladder. We've been top of the ladder for 10 rounds, in the top 2 for 15 rounds, and in the top 4 for the entire season.

We're 9-0 against the top 11.

Two weeks ago we comprehensively outplayed the side sitting 4th on their home deck with a vocal opposition crowd.

But in your view we've never been a legitimate contender?

Should be a good close game. I reckon the Dogs will get up. Our form has been average in the past 2months despite beating some good teams

2 wins from our last 6 games. We need to turn out form around quick

It's 3 from 6, and a 3-1-2 record overall.

It will be 2 from our last 6 if we lose tonight, though.

Im glad the % monkey is off our backs.

The BOM may have got its original forecast a bit wrong. There's rain a'coming for sure but it's light to medium according to the current radar images. And no mega front by any stretch. Fingers crossed for reasonable conditions tonight.

Another response needed by MFC.

The two frontrunners, have we learned anything from the two games we have already played against them. Could be a good strategic game. Will Bevo or Goods throw all their stuff into the mix?

Hoping we play an attacking game and not a dour affair. Let our defence stand up without all the mids flooding back and exhausting themselves.

Want accuracy in-front of goals. It has been our achilles heal. Hoping the forward structure is developing quickly.

Tackles need to stick and can't let them have easy or uncontested disposals.

We won't jump them again in the first (though would like a repeat). So we need to stick close and not let them blow us away early and play for the 4 quarters.

It will be a spirited game.

Come out angry Dees.

Reset the season after some loses. Good chance to win the ones that matter.

Go Dees.

Curious, if we lose tonight, do most posters on here,  interpret it that we are not 'legitimate contenders'?

Of course they will! You know how it goes… Win, and it’s all, I’m glad I’ve got my GFG, this is our year etc. Lose, and it’s all, ima run a hot bath, slide on in, and open a vein. ?

Wrong picket, if they work out a system on how to deliver the ball into the forward line that will go down as the great efforts of the season.

Really need to win tonight.

Dont want us playing port in our first final on their turf.

Then the hawks draw and cwood....crows fiasco losses come back and could cost us a flag before we get a look in.

Gee credit given for our wins against top teams but those losses really stand out at this end of the season and they were as monumental as our wins. We dont make it easy for ourselves.

Im sorry but its true.

It's an interesting psychological study to see some supporters almost hoping we lose purely to buck the trend of us beating good teams and losing to poor ones...

Which logically doesn’t make sense since it’s the top sides we’ll meet in September and not the cellar dwellers.

Let's not kid ourselves. We have played 1 good game in the last 5

The way we play will be very important tonight. We need to be switched on the word go.

Not Goodwins strong suit though...

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
