Nathan Buckley Steps Down as Collingwood Coach

Featured Replies

Nathan Buckley is poised to step down as coach of Collingwood, midway through his 10th season at the helm of the Magpies.

Buckley was expected to tell the football department and players of his decision on Wednesday morning, ending months of speculation about his position.

Sources said it was most likely Buckley would finish up after coaching the club against Melbourne on Queen’s Birthday but The Age has not confirmed whether that will be his last game.

Melbourne Football Club players, you know what to do.

This worries me with Yze and Williams...

Williams said he has no aspirations to be a senior coach again. He’s much happier to work in development.
Yze is a different story.

Thanks Buckley for doing this right before our game against you. Selfish ??

Fear from memory MFC have bad record in this department. Recall weak Adelaide replaced a coach against us…

I'm not worried about Yze leaving and certainly not leaving us in the lurch halfway through a season that we're 11-1 with the best shot at a premiership in 50+ years.

I'm more worried about Collingwood playing out of their skins for Buckley's last game.

damn. Why couldn't he wait till the bye.

Let’s give him a great send-off!

❤️?

I'll throw a spanner..

If we lost Yze to a senior gig, would you take Buckley as a midfield coach?

Yes, don’t think it will happen though.

To be fair we lost both Neeld and Roos’ last games as coach. I guess it depends how much the players love Bucks or how unhappy they are with this move.
We have a lot more on the line than they do. No excuses.

Would anyone be keen to get Bucks in as an assistant? I rate him highly but unsure if he’s suited to not be the main man.

Yes. Buckley has a great footy mind and Collingwood are foolish to get rid of him. Its quite clear they don't have the cattle at the club to compete

Can't see them going for an untried coach. Too much pressure comes with Collingwood and they're in a world of pain given their off season. They'll need to spin this as a positive and only someone of the caliber of Clarkson or Longmire etc would keep the members happy.

I have a lot of admiration for him, he has been at the helm of arguably the biggest club in the land, with a new controversy every year it seems.

He has weathered the storm with Racism, Ed, Board takeovers etc.

Would happily take him on in a part time role should Yze walk

With Carlton and Collingwood both looking to be coachless for 2022, you have to think either of Clarko or Sam Mitchell fills one of the roles and Ross Lyon probably takes the other

No. We would need a gameday coach to replace Yze and Buckley is not a gameday coach.

2 points.

Micky malthouse has arguably s*** the bed in leaving his last 2 clubs in tatters

Pies still paying $5.50 on sportsbet for QB, but if a loyal dee fan like me the +32.5 at the line is tasty

Williams won’t be a senior coach and if Yze gets the job then it will be from next year and I personally would wish him all the best.

Just to clarify my comment, I am meaning next year not this year in terms of replacement.

Need to send Bucks off in the same manner as Roosy's last game

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
