The AFL had to jump thru hoops to get 'sterile corridors' set up with State CHO's.  If Vic goes into total lockdown again what are the chances of those corridors being shut.

I suspect the AFL will be madly working the phones with Premiers and it would not surprise to see the 8 finalists leave Vic before the weekend is over and go and hub somewhere they can still get into.

As did I BBP.

It seems clear that yesterday’s numbers were largely a result of 13 day tests of those that went into isolation at the beginning of this current outbreak.

But today’s numbers are driven by a new cycle of infections.

I suspect Melburnians went into last weekend thinking the city was getting on top it. And if you were looking at the numbers and the iso % late last week, you can understand why. See the highlighted section in this graph on the 11-13 August.

6D0984B5-4BEF-4C83-946E-47F815867C8B.thumb.jpeg.3f29ea7a6a121e59e59b7af381188294.jpeg

That prompted a spike in population movement as shown in this graph, a trend in behaviour that is common across all lockdowns, i.e. movement begins to pick up towards the end of lockdown.

049046B0-1754-49D2-A148-813A90536847.thumb.png.efeec293ed42c0b5564d340832a3eb7b.png

Thus these are new infections that have been out and about this week, seeding a new cycle of infections that will take at least two weeks to bring under control.

Sadly I think this means finals in Melbourne are unlikely 🙁

Calling it a snap lockdown is a double edged sword. People begin their movements towards the end of the lockdown cycle as you have shown, on the expectation that we will come out of it. The messaging of a snap lockdown is wrong and i hope is abolished. They should have approached it like lockdowns gone by and said "We are going into lockdown UNTIL numbers are back within tolerable limits - we will re-asses the lockdown in 1 or 2 weeks time." That way people are not inclined to act on the assumption that we will come out by default, but rather act on the basis of the numbers - the media would have also followed the narrative a bit more closely.

Anyone with half a brain could have seen that in the current lockdown, the data was trending the wrong way prior to the extensions that were implemented.

I feel for regional Victoria but honestly they never should have been opened up without a proper ring of steel. People can’t be trusted.

Some regional ppl are also guilty of coming in to and through Melb and back again though Jaded.  It's not all one way.

I personally witnessed a number of country folk flouting the ring of steel last year and taking routes around the check points to get in to Melb metro and out again.

In addition, i could be wrong, but pretty sure freight carriers are still able to get through the interstate borders and drop/pick up their goods here...then head to the next state or back again (with permits).

There's plenty of ways in which, even if we get back to zero, this bloody thing can sneak back in again and send us all back into yet another lockdown in a flash.

Look at the 5th one caused by the removalist guys (who i believe may have since been banned from entering from NSW since).

While I'm sure there are likely to be alot more going from the burbs out to regional and doing dumb things (eg wearing no masks & going inside public places / half masking etc), it also goes both ways.

Nuckle heads don't just live inside a ring when it's in place!

I have today officially given up in 2021 on:

Seeing another football game live.

Being able to move outside 5km from my home.

From today I have officially began to hibernate and am only thinking one day at a time. Sad isn't it  But life is now reduce to existing.

Time for another Heineken.

What's the bet that wherever they play the GF this year there will be no crowd.

I live in Ballarat, have a cafe owner friend, he said Saturday last week they had 50 plus people turned away from eating there, all had Melbourne drivers licence addresses. It was a theme among a number of outlets. Covid thrives on idiots and the selfish

Exactly the same thing has been happening here in Shepparton. No wonder we got the damn virus.

From a purely selfish point of view, today is not such a bad day. Actually, its pretty good. Not for the State obviously, but please grant me this small win.

This morning my family and I were released from 14 day home quarantine due to tier 1 exposure, despite us adults being full vaxxed. Possibly the toughest mental health two weeks in my life.

5 km radius, night curfew and 2 hrs exercise seems like luxooory now.

First outing today I found myself being really nervous around others and angry with those not wearing masks properly. Don't want to be like this. Normally I roll with the punches pretty well.

Most of all I'm [censored]-off with the slow vax implementation nation wide (thanks ScoMo) and anyone not actively trying to get vaxxed asap. As they say, it will become a pandemic of the unvaccinated

Thank god for the football and the Dees form this year!

Onwards and upwards!

I totally agree with this. But I think it's important to note, since it's been widely reported that the people who held the engagement party are Jewish, that they are a minority. Unfortunately the orthodox and ultra orthodox community are mostly insular and selfish and they don't really care about what happens outside of their walls. But they are a minority within the larger Jewish community, and I just want to point that out because I've seen a lot of hate online for the community at large, and that is just simply unfair.
Many leaders of the community have stood up and spoken out against these people, which is something we haven't seen from any other cultural or religious group that have also breached restrictions in the past.

People are trash. People who use their religion or cultural heritage to justify their trash behaviour are even worse.

I've just about had enough of everyone!

Hi Jaded. I totally sympathize with you, but I also know that religious leaders from the Muslim community have also come out and chided the lawbreakers among them. As you say, people are trash - I'd qualify that with some people are trash. I learned that as a taxi driver when most of my passengers were good people who just wanted to get from A to B. Then there was the trash. When I look back, that element represented maybe .5%, probably a fair reflection of the people in any community who make up their own law when and if it pleases them.

As I keep saying, Airlie Beach has a good sized AFL oval with room for a pie and coffee van. And the new bar is almost finished construction.

Plenty of accommodation here. I can even put up some of you dirty Melbournians if needed.

Apparently the older Poles in general are rather reluctant to get vaxxed, especially those in the many little villages. In Warsaw the rates are pretty good. The younger generations are keen to be vaccinated.

My wife has regular contact with her relatives in Lodz and Warsaw. They are all very critical of the current Polish government but my impression is that, like you say, the younger generations have embraced Vaccination.

Jaded, the first case identified in Shep lives there and there is no evidence that it was seeded by someone travelling from Melbourne to Shep. From memory there were detections in Shepparton weeks ago as well so there is every chance that Covid has been seeding locally in Shep for a few weeks, as it was in North/West Melbourne.

Also, a serious question. Does anyone know why during the press conferences our politicians thank Regional Victorians so much?  They obviously do this for a reason, but I am unable to make sense of it.

I think it’s quite accurate - look at her language. Without going into it too much, I watch her daily as I live in NSW, and her intent has been clear from the start.

On the ABC news tonight they quoted her creepy crawly nonsense from July, throughout August until today. In all of the prior statements she said there is no proof curfews solve anything. Today she announced a curfew. Um, about time, maybe, Gladys?

Um, I know another politician who lives in NSW who constantly changes his tune, advice and position - but I have been warned not to make 'political' statements by Mr. Grapeviny so I won't.

The Polish govt. deserves all the criticism it gets. They’re setting the country backwards in time. The younger generation have a battle on their hands.

she never got into that detail. really, you are just looking for reason to be picky

(not highlighting you) there is just too much finger pointing, blame gaming, interstate slanging off and blatant political point scoring. the country as a whole is really doing a pretty good job compared to almost any other country in the whole world. this whole covid thing is just such uncharted waters where there is no single best way to solve everything. sure things could have been done better some mistakes avoided and preferably less idiots amongst ourselves. every state has had a different mix of problems and advantages.   I think all the goverments, state and federal, have done a reasonably good job to keep our statistics so low on an international comparison.

a liitle bit more of a positive overall perspective and less obsessiveness over the nitpicky details would benefit us all

sorry to rant, but the point scoring is really [censored] me off

I guess you are entitled to your opinion and I would certainly agree that S.A. Tasmania, WA, Queensland and Victoria have led the charge towards affirmative action but the response of NSW and the Federal government has been a tragic, constantly contradictory joke. They certainly qualify for Gold Standard accreditation for Double Speak.

I hope so too. Although something tells me he’d handle himself fine in gaol. It’s the other inmates that might have reason to worry. 😁

Somewhat ironically, for a politician who is recognised more for his political nous than his policy skills, Morrison missed an opportunity. If he had agreed to include the Opposition Leader in his National Cabinet, it would have silenced Albanese as once inside that Cabinet, he would be bound to agree with every decision made. That would have strengthened Morrison's position as he would have had no Federal Opposition public commentary to worry about on this issue.

To quote a certain line of history, Scomo always misses an opportunity...
