I suspect Melburnians went into last weekend thinking the city was getting on top it. And if you were looking at the numbers and the iso % late last week, you can understand why. See the highlighted section in this graph on the 11-13 August. 

That prompted a spike in population movement as shown in this graph, a trend in behaviour that is common across all lockdowns, i.e. movement begins to pick up towards the end of lockdown. 

Thus these are new infections that have been out and about this week, seeding a new cycle of infections that will take at least two weeks to bring under control. 

Sadly I think this means finals in Melbourne are unlikely 🙁

 

Calling it a snap lockdown is a double edged sword. People begin their movements towards the end of the lockdown cycle as you have shown, on the expectation that we will come out of it. The messaging of a snap lockdown is wrong and i hope is abolished. They should have approached it like lockdowns gone by and said "We are going into lockdown UNTIL numbers are back within tolerable limits - we will re-asses the lockdown in 1 or 2 weeks time." That way people are not inclined to act on the assumption that we will come out by default, but rather act on the basis of the numbers - the media would have also followed the narrative a bit more closely.

Anyone with half a brain could have seen that in the current lockdown, the data was trending the wrong way prior to the extensions that were implemented.

Some regional ppl are also guilty of coming in to and through Melb and back again though Jaded.  It's not all one way.

I personally witnessed a number of country folk flouting the ring of steel last year and taking routes around the check points to get in to Melb metro and out again.

In addition, i could be wrong, but pretty sure freight carriers are still able to get through the interstate borders and drop/pick up their goods here...then head to the next state or back again (with permits).

There's plenty of ways in which, even if we get back to zero, this bloody thing can sneak back in again and send us all back into yet another lockdown in a flash.

Look at the 5th one caused by the removalist guys (who i believe may have since been banned from entering from NSW since).

While I'm sure there are likely to be alot more going from the burbs out to regional and doing dumb things (eg wearing no masks & going inside public places / half masking etc), it also goes both ways.

Being able to move outside 5km from my home.

From today I have officially began to hibernate and am only thinking one day at a time. Sad isn't it  But life is now reduce to existing.

Yep I have heard similar stories the amount of people from Melbourne that have showed up is insane

From a purely selfish point of view, today is not such a bad day. Actually, its pretty good. Not for the State obviously, but please grant me this small win.

This morning my family and I were released from 14 day home quarantine due to tier 1 exposure, despite us adults being full vaxxed. Possibly the toughest mental health two weeks in my life.

5 km radius, night curfew and 2 hrs exercise seems like luxooory now.

First outing today I found myself being really nervous around others and angry with those not wearing masks properly. Don't want to be like this. Normally I roll with the punches pretty well.

Most of all I'm [censored]-off with the slow vax implementation nation wide (thanks ScoMo) and anyone not actively trying to get vaxxed asap. As they say, it will become a pandemic of the unvaccinated

Thank god for the football and the Dees form this year!

Hi Jaded. I totally sympathize with you, but I also know that religious leaders from the Muslim community have also come out and chided the lawbreakers among them. As you say, people are trash - I'd qualify that with some people are trash. I learned that as a taxi driver when most of my passengers were good people who just wanted to get from A to B. Then there was the trash. When I look back, that element represented maybe .5%, probably a fair reflection of the people in any community who make up their own law when and if it pleases them.

Come Federal election time please remember who has responsibility for inbound quarantine and the vaccination procurement and distribution (hint:  not the states )

Jaded, the first case identified in Shep lives there and there is no evidence that it was seeded by someone travelling from Melbourne to Shep. From memory there were detections in Shepparton weeks ago as well so there is every chance that Covid has been seeding locally in Shep for a few weeks, as it was in North/West Melbourne.

Also, a serious question. Does anyone know why during the press conferences our politicians thank Regional Victorians so much?  They obviously do this for a reason, but I am unable to make sense of it.

The Polish govt. deserves all the criticism it gets. They’re setting the country backwards in time. The younger generation have a battle on their hands.
