Round 13 it returns with a vfl match on kayo/fox footy until then

As I’m sure all AFL fans would attest, there’s nothing quite like watching your team win on a Thursday night (in this case, the mighty Deeeeez) then sitting back and watching the rabble battle it out for the remainder of the weekend. ?

Is the announcement of teams happening tonight?

Who would know.

But looking at the AFL crapsite there is this tile ATM:

https://www.afl.com.au/matches/team-lineups

It says underneath the tile:  announced 6:20 EST.

However, it doesn't indicate which day. Of course

LOL good question...    knew I should have held off on saying well done to the AFL for bringing it back.. when they didn't even do it last night.  Or next week apparently.

They cant do anything right.

To be fair, the change back to Thursday night teams would require the Clubs' buy-in. None of the coaches would like this. They'd all like to announce the teams as they run out. So I would suggest this would need a little lead-in time and consultation. It's not as easy as the AFL making a change with no meaningful notice.

I’m still not sure why two weeks is required for clubs to get used to the idea. But oh well. “Consult” away.

I see your point SD, I do  however enjoy kicking the AFL decision makers at every opportunity.

Only one coach has come out publicly and said they don't like it and surprise, surprise, it's the "slick-back sook" Chris Scott:

I think to be fair if they did an anonymous poll of the coaches it would very likely be in favour of the “don’t like it” category.

It’s one of those things that I don’t think the AFL expected fans to miss, but it’s part of the ritual of the week of footy. They should have done this poll before the season to make this call. And if they bring it back and clubs refuse to cooperate, just fine them.

Thursday night team announcement officially back from round 10 (ie. next week).  It's beyond me why they couldn't have re-introduced this fan favourite earlier, but at least it's finally happening.

Why round 10 and not round 9? Like how much notice do you need to give clubs? As if they don’t know by Thursday who they are picking. FFS.

My sentiments exactly, Jaded.  This press release from AFL Headquarters may help explain things.

A WIN FOR FANS WITH LATEST BRAVE DECISION

19 minutes ago - available via the app

Staff writer - 11 May 2021

Widely regarded for noble acts of selflessness, the AFL has continued to put fans first, taking a bold step in permitting Thursday night team announcements once again.

League headquarters have been working frantically to solve a problem they created.

The outcry from fans prompted the courageous decision.

An administrator could not hide his delight today, when asked for comment.

‘We are just so thrilled to deliver the fans what they ask for. It’s one way to show just how much we value your contribution to our game, especially the financial one.’

The announcement finally landed after yesterday’s announcement about the announcement, and the announcement last week to announce that.

The reintroduction does however, require teams to name their entire roster on Thursday evenings, with the final team decided seven minutes before the start of the match.

‘Yeah look it will present a great challenge to teams, selecting a side so close to the bounce, but we encourage this, it really fits with the league’s theme of making rushed decisions on the fly.’

This comes after the league made an equally heroic decision to return full-length quarters in 2021, irrespective of the fact this was the case for 25 years prior.

‘It is fundamentally about showing the fans how important they are. Not quite as much as our corporate partners and key stakeholders, but trust me - your views count,’ the executive claimed.

‘You are critical in ensuring our fat bonuses are paid…errr I mean, that our game continues to thrive.’

The league pointed to the incredibly successful introduction of behavioural awareness officers at matches, spying on fans, purely to understand what they really want.

'That is the sole reason we have employed these people at our venues…they are listening to every word you say.'

It's ironic that they make this announcement 9 days in advance of it being implemented

I've been trying to work out why the delay to Round 10. Possible reasons might be:

  • something to do with commitments to broadcast partners?
  • something to do with commitments to sponsors?
  • Steve Hocking has to sign off on the decision, can't find his pen and the next delivery of pens is not until the week before Round 10?

It’s the AFL they won’t make money out of this change so it is far from the top of list of things to be done.

NRL clubs have been announcing teams on Tuesdays for years. Not sure why it is so hard for AFL clubs to commit to Thursdays.

Cannot understand the delay. Just do it, no notice required. All the clubs need to do is look at the list and rule some out. They will not supply a final  side but a list of names for the side to be selected from. Could be done by the work experience kid. I do not value the quality of the information but am happy to have it.

I agree. But the real value is that it provides the formal mental start to the weekend's football. The fact that there is this announcement, whether people get it via TV, radio, online, social media, etc has the effect of being the starter's pistol getting the weekend of football off and running.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
