Loved the moment in the last when Lever was by himself in the D50 with a wave of Geelong players on the way in. Had started chasing the player about to get out the back, but at the last second went towards the ball carrier instead. Got there just in the nick of time, with the help of dud bounce by the carrier, and held the ball up before the cavalry arrived. Saved an absolutely certain goal and got a massive cheer from the crowd, and me at home.

From behind the goals there was only one player that looked likely to put any kind of pressure on the carrier running through the middle.... and then i realised it was a pair of chunky chunk legs i was watching coming towards me at a snails pace chasing ?

But cudos to Jones who was still running his guts out to try and make a difference.  Who knows the Geelong carrier who muffed the bounce may have felt the thunder from those big thighs stomping into the turf 10 meters or so behind!  Good onya Chunk.

Arrived at the MCG in a howling wind and under a threatening cloudy sky, to be greeted by the sound of Led Zepplin's "Kashmir" booming around the ground. When it was followed by Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer", I took it to be a good omen for us. Let's do this!

As others have said, what a great team effort. Everyone played well. Pressure was intense, desire for the ball fierce.

Viney fought tooth and nail for every possession, May was his usual reliable self until Hawkins took care of him, Lever commanded the backline in his absence, Hunt and Langdon thrilled with their runs down the wings, Max dominated all day and kicked that long bouncing goal to shut down some noisy Geelong fans near us when needed, Kozzie was lurking about in everything and assisted in some special goals, always putting pressure on the opposition. What an exciting player he is, you just know he is about to do something brilliant and you are yelling "Kozzie!" before he has even touched the ball.

Things are going well when Fritta kicks true! Clarrie didn't waste his touches with aimless flick passes. He took his time to look for a team mate. Just wonderful. Petracca, superb as usual. Pity he didn't kick more goals. Spargo's tackling, Salem's marking, Jones, TMac, Angus, ANB, all good contributors. Apologies to whoever I've left out. Overall a classy effort.

So good to see off those arrogant Geelong supporters.

There is nothing like an emphatic win to thaw out the bones after sitting in the cold and wet at the MCG late on a Sunday afternoon.

Happy Eddie Murphy GIF

I got there at sledgehammer.  Fair bit of acca dacca also but i feel thats a common thing at many openers now.

I must admit the song selection was alot better today imv.  Much more grunty and rocky making it feel more like a true home ground fortress up for the fight.

Thunder struck was also played in full i think instead of the usual 15 seconds or so as they ran through the banner before the theme song started a few seasons back.

Sparrow missed a quarter and a half as the sub though

Yep, what i meant was that Sparrow did well to register those 5 tackles disposals with limited game time. I'd say JJ might be in trouble next week.

What were the stats for Kozzie goal assist today? And also for the season so far? Seemed like he was on the end of everything at one stage...

2 goal assists & 7 score involvements today.

Season averages....

Ranked equal second for Goal Assists on 0.75 alongside Tmac and behind Spargo who's in 1st posi with 1 per match.

Sitting equal third for Score Involvements alongside Frittata on 6.75.  Clarry second on 7.50 and Tracc sitting in first position on 8.50

Highlight: Seeing those guys play like a well-oiled machine. We watched the team earn a level of respect we haven't seen in years. No passengers, except Melksham. But I'm willing to let him have a return game to find his feet.

We deserve this feeling, my fellow Dees supporters.

Lowlights: Losing May and...

Brian Taylor - "You get the feeling this game is like a bag of sand hanging in the air above, and any second it's going to burst and spread itself all over the ground"

Been watching the Dees for almost 50 years and that was easily one of the best games I've ever seen in regards to relentless defensive pressure. When we've lost to sides like St Kilda recently it's been because we failed to handle this type of defence and now here we are dishing it out..

This is a seismic change in the way the team goes about its job and the type of pressure that can win big games.

Well done Dees.

Sounds like you’re now on board FD which is great

I think you’ve tipped against every round thus far. Do you mind continuing to do so? You’ve developed into a luck charm for us i reckon ?

There is only one error in this, replace "*Essendon were unable to play finals due to supplement saga" with "*Essendon were ineligible for finals due to sanctions issued for their illegal doping program throughout 2011 and 2012.".

Don't worry, old dee. We're going to lose a game at some point. And make no mistake, the usual suspects who have been conspicuously absent on here over the last four weeks are going to resurface. Then, you'll feel like things are back to "normal".

Until then, though, lap it up! We're a genuine football team right now. It's been a while since we've been able to say that.

Oh I am enjoying it tu. If there is one thing the MFC has taught me is to enjoy the victory’s when they happen.

Not lazy in applying them.

It’s always special beating the cats, there isn’t a team I hate more, hate them, their coach and captain.

a few things I loved today that haven’t been mentioned:

leg speed - long gone is the slow Melbourne team, we’re seriously fast now, loving it

Rivers - the amount of times I saw him busting is [censored] to get back in defence today was outstanding, he has some serious wheels

Kozzie - just love him, but a few times today (him and Fritsch) that he hesitated going for the ball, I cannot wait until he just takes it upon himself and grabs it, love the ball in his hands.

Lever, Langdon, Hunt, Salam I haven’t seen play better games for the Dee’s.

Melksham was quiet, it would be hard playing a rubbish VFL practice match and then Turing up to play the cats, hoping he gets another run next week and contributes like we all want him too (2018 model please)

Milkshake had no form to justify his inclusion in the side and played like he had for most of 2020. It pays to be the coaches buddy.

Jake Lever’s performance reminded me of the late, great Sean Wight, with his anticipation and athletic attack.

Thats a big compliment to Jake, Joeboy.

Sean Wight was a hero. One of my favorite all time players. Probably the strongest and bravest. Was well respected by all  including opposition.

But JL is starting to show the same clothe.

100% agree Deever. His tackling pressure is elite. He nails his tackles. Every time.

Was actually excited to see him selected but agreed he didnt do much.

Really hoping he would embrace his 2nd chance and rip into it, like Tmac has done.

First game in a long time but Tmac started on fire. I still remember his silky skills and conditions were not great but then I look at how Fritta played.

If he plays again like that then I cant see him staying at he club.

Sounds harsh but when I see how all the other players are doing everything to win....TWELVE tackles by Viney, then its hard not to feel that way. Especially given his performance last year. Maybe he will turn it around. I really hope so but I dont think Im alone in saying these things.

Great team win. My MFCSS wondering if we’re going to show up or not is starting to melt. We are lovely to watch.

Special shout out to Jayden Hunt, you’re in career best form. Keep it up mate, love watching you and Langdon streaming forward in excess of the speed limit.

I reckon the new "stand on the mark" rule is helping him use his speed. Once he's away, only the speedsters will catch him, and I think that gives him a bit of confidence. Haven't seen the DE stats, but I reckon his kicking was pretty good yesterday

Happy to give him a pass with it being his first game & also horrendous conditions. However would have to show marked improvement next week. On song his delivery into the forward line is a weapon & he was generally a good shot for goal.

What a weapon having Hunt and Langdon working together in tandem. These two just cut ribbons through any defence. I thought they worked in really well with Brayshaw a few times as he was on the end of some of their runs down the wings. It's great seeing these three hit some form. When they're up and about very hard to stop.

In an interview before round 1, Max said that our players were “hurting” because they had let themselves and the supporters down by not making finals in 2020 .......... they were intent on redeeming themselves in 2021.  His statement was (quite reasonably) greeted around here with many comments along the lines of “we’ve heard it all before”, “talk is cheap” and “we want actions, not words”.

Well, I think in the first four rounds, we are starting to see strong evidence that Max is a man of his word, and our team is prepared to back him up.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
