i honestly don't think Trac makes it this season, i think it is he OR oliver not both and i think oliver has had the superior year. with midfielders if you're the best in your side you attract so much of the footy and stand out more easily.

i think its hard to go past Bont, Oliver, Lyons, Walsh (W), Wines, Touk, Macrae (W), Parish without throwing him to a cheeky flank, but imo probably hasn't starred as much as some people seem to think. he'd be more in the guthrie, mccluggage, steele, discussion which is more your 40 squad but miss the cut.

Gawn, Lever, May, Oliver for mine

Well I think Oliver is a better play all round but petracca is the perfect guy to put on a half forward flank. Just like what they do with Danger and Dusty.

langdon is by some margin the best wingman in the game this year

but i fully expect the all oztrayan selectors to stick with tradition and name ostensible on-ballers on the wing (walsh, macrae, or miller) and half-forward flanks (petracca, bontempelli)

in terms of the squad at the moment i'd have may, lever, salem, gawn, oliver, petracca, langdon in it, but only expecting one of may or lever in it, plus gawn, oliver, and petracca

but who knows how the final six rounds will play out and how recency bias influences selection

I'm not sure if there is a bias towards Melbourne here, but by my count there are 6 in this rolling AA team.

It's a decent side they've put together.

He’s a gun but not in the past 5-6 weeks he’s only been good. Not great

All-Australian team will be announced this Thursday, and while he's unlikely to get a spot in the final 22, surely Kozzy Pickett deserves to be part of the conversation.

Has had the odd quiet patch, but finished 3rd in the league for tackles inside 50, and put 35 goals on the board.

Outstanding effort.

PS: ANB was #1 in the comp for tackles inside 50. Also outstanding.

I'd say Fritsh would be ahead of Kozzie and ANB for the pocket spot with how many goals he kicked this year.

Toby Greene has the other pocket spot sewn up for sure

  • Grapeviney changed the title to The 2021 All-Australian Team

40 man squad gets announced today.

Best 22 announced Thursday.

Could be a few Dees in the team.

Max, Clarry, Petracca, Lever all just about certain

Fritsch, Langdon, Salem, May and co all huge chances as well

I always think they should keep a spot in the AA for a small forward who tackles, terrorises and kicks goals. They are exciting and always one of my favorite players. I am so happy we have a genuine contender in Kossie, he is a great player in great form. His first goal the other night was a beauty and he had a big hand in our comeback kicking 2 more goals and setting up Fritsch with a beautiful kick inside 50. So I thought through all the contenders for that spot.

Dees; Kozzie, Spargo and ANB all good players, Kozzie the X Factor that usually gets the nod in AA selection. Just a note on how good our coaching has been to identify a style of play with these 3 involved and stick fat with them when a lot of us were calling for them to be dropped at times. Looking at the list of other teams, we have a good mix of players and a dangerous forward line.

Port; Butters, Gray and Rozee. No real contender. All good players but injury and Rozee is more a hff

Geelong; Close and Miers, both good players but fringe players in Geelong side so nowhere near AA selection and a concern for Geelong going forward. Think how good Cockatoo Collins is now going at Lions for pennies. Bad list management by Geelong.

Lions; Cameron, Zac Bailey, Coleman and McCarthy. A developing and dangerous lot of smalls the Lions finished top for points for for the H/A season due in no small part to their mix of small forwards, all offering a different set of troubles to backlines. Cameron is the genuine star but not in AA form but could rip a finals series apart. Zac Bailey is a star as well but has played a bit more up the field. Still is top 10 in this category but not AA forward pocket. McCarthy is more in the Toby Green mould and while handy is not AA. Coleman at 21 and 19 games is a coming star of the game, who we can hopefully shut out on Saturday

Dogs'; Weightman. Is a star and will be top 2 or 3 in this list for the next decade. Max already hates him and he will have plenty of mark/goal of the year nominations over the next decade. I think Kozzie is just ahead of him as he's played all year but Weightmans rise has been impressive.

Sydney; Papley. Rarely mentioned in AA talk but surely he tops this list. Is a genuine star and has the best celebrations in the comp. Should be in AA just ahead of Kozzie.

GWS; Green will be AA and is a super star of the comp, top 10 in the league, but not a small forward by my definition. Like McCarthy for Lions or Fritsch for us or Rohan for Geelong is a mid sized forward that plays a different role. Can go in the other pocket.

Essendon; McDonald Tipungwuti. No

Others; Ryan for West Coast is a great player but obviously not this year

Betts for Carlton. He could own the position. The Eddie Betts pocket in the AA side for the small crumbing forward. Another accolade and the naming of another pocket with the Adelaide oval as more decoration to a great career.

I've possibly forgotten someone but I love the position, think it should be recognised in AA lists and offers some of the best and most exciting players in the comp. And we have Kozzie!!!!!!

My Prediction -

Locks: Gawn (c), Oliver, Petracca, Lever
Probable: May
Squad Chances: Fritsch, Salem

I don't think they'll pick May, although they should. Weitering or Andrew will get the pick with Lever, Aliir and couple  others.

Interesting if Gawn is starting ruck or on the bench.

Reckon they'll give May a backdated AA for last years robbery

Gawn, Oliver, Petracca and Lever are certainties to make the 22. May probably 50/50 - Aliir and Andrews have been outstanding all year as well, and one of those 3 will miss out. Weitering has also been great in a terrible side.

Charlie Cameron will take the small forward spot, but Kossie is a chance to make the squad. Fritsch probably doesn't do enough aside from kicking goals - not a knock on him, but he's probably competing with Greene who has been better. Salem will make the squad but probably wasn't good enough in the second half of the year to make the team. Some good players will miss out.

I reckon it will look something like this:

FB: Lever Andrews Stewart

HB: Rich May Dale

C: Merrett Oliver Macrae

HF: Stringer Hawkins Petracca

FF: Cameron McKay Greene

Fol: Gawn Bontempelli Wines

Int: Miller NicNat Steele Aliir

Goody has got to be coach of the year doesn't he? a team most predicted to win finals finishing with what 17 wins, minor premiership

I'd also nearly pick Max as the AA Captain to be honest, i'd say it's him or Bont

I think Gawn deserves to be selected as the starting ruckman more than Naitanui does. Even if it's true that Naitanui is the best tap ruckman, Gawn does a lot more damage on the ground and he impacts the scoreboard far more regularly.

Agree. I think Gawn is a massive chance to get the AA captain as well which means starting surely.

I like your side but I don't think Cameron is in AA form. I think Papley should get the nod. Apart from the fact he has had a great year, you probably have to put a Sydney Swan player in and Parker, Mills, Heeney and maybe Tom Hickey come into consideration and may make the squad but I don't think any of those will make the team and while Papley may not make it I think they'll go for a second full forward in the spot rather than Cameron. I spose we'll see.

Nic Nat had the fourth most clearances this year. I think his impact has been enormous. Gawn is a much better mark but has only kicked 11 goals to Nic Nat's 3.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Nic Nat as the starting ruck.

Yep, unfortunately I think Nicnat will be the starting ruck.

Agree with this team apart from these changes.

Out: Andrews, In: Weitering

Nicnat and Gawn to be swapped (I think Nicnat will get the nod)

Bont will probably be made C

Parish will be ahead of Miller or Steele, rightly or wrongly.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
