If your at uni, this i a great opportunity for those interested in a sporting field of work in the support skills.  As pointed out focusing on the Uni market and not a blanket ad was maybe their misstep.  I would support my kids to do it, if it matched their ambitions.

From the original job ad it looked like it they wanted someone to stay on for a year with 10-25 contact hours asking for skilled graduates. There's nothing in the fair act about promising it to be permanent f/t work. 

Sure if you're at uni it might be great but once you word it like an opportunity for graduates it starts becoming unfair on as only people who are from privledged positions can really do it. Having to work 25 hours a week and having to do another job to support your life isnt very feasible. Only the kids with strong support structures (i.e living at home) have a shot. 

From reading the reddit post on this it seems like it is the norm for the industry. Pretty disappointing.

I totally agree it is inappropriate and surely a development Coach could not apply himself 100% on 25 hrs a week to as low as 10 hrs a week. Poor judgment by the Club

All clubs are looking to be creative in different areaS to save.

What about trainers they volunteer and Gain some experience That's not a 2 hour  a week job either!!

 

Unbelievable, but then again it is MFC.

Plays to the elitist tag we so desperately need to be rid off. Blah, blah blah about being the oldest club is of no relevance to a tech student. How this wasnt organised through the channels of a TAFE or Uni is just incompetent. many courses have placement hours and this could and should have been done in the regular and compliant way. 

No problem with volunteers but surely that is for other roles around the club like lugging the equipment to Goschs paddock and the like. Where iss the Management oversight at the Club. just appalling. I will always support the Demons and the mighty red and blue but the MFC leaves me cold.

I really don't get the outrage. if you want to work in a highly competitive area you need to go the extra mile. Volunteering a couple of days a week at an AFL club is a great opportunity. not like the course you would do is 40 hrs per week.

All clubs have been sacking coaches and FD staff and are seeing if any keen graduates are up for an opportunity.

Where I live the university has run ads asking for sporting clubs (local and professional) to give their students the same opportunities the MFC had. This is just another example of how people want to find outrage in everything, as compared to seeing something for what it is. Sorry if I offend anyone with the type of font I'm using.

Obviously some people need to complain about something or their day won't be complete.

Which is exactly what you do every time you post.  already MFC have backtracked from the ad which tells you everything you need to know. Amateur hour.

Ad wording was poor but this type of thing is extremely common in professional industries.

I am with a decent sized financial advice firm and we have had a number of uni graduates do work experience with us, typically for 3 months.

It's becoming harder and harder to live in this PC, media saturated world.

I'm not going to trawl through old papers to find an ad for you, but when I was involved with a local club (non footy) we were approached asking if we had things students could do to get their hours up, plus my kids are involved with little aths and they have students rotate through there occasionally and at their school they also have some attend to assist with P.E (and as far as I know it's a non-paid gig). This is a very very common thing.

Also the MFC didn't backtrack on the ad, they clarified for those who got offended.

This is not a work experience program set up by an educational institute or large corporation. It reads as work, no mention of mentoring

When i did work experience many years ago (2-3 different stints) i was at least paid $50 a week which paid for lunch and Transport

I reckon this is a bit of a storm in a teacup.  While I understand that calling for students or "graduates" to volunteer 10-25 hours per week could be viewed as taking advantage of inexperience if recent graduates it probably reflects the reality that the work is suitable for students but that the club doesn't want to overlook recent graduates who otherwise couldn't gain paid experience in their field due to he impact of Covid on sporting clubs. Our club is pretty good on being responsible citizen and I think they deserve the benefit of doubt here.
