Adam The God 30,751 Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 (edited) As a possibly oversimplified comparison, I've been saying for a while that we appear to be in a similar position to Richmond prior to 2017 clicking for them. We have an elite core and then a drop away from the rest after this, as the system and coaching has failed to get the best out of the group. Likewise, the group itself has been too inconsistent. For comparison though... Riewoldt, Rance, Martin, Cotchin, Prestia Brown, May, Oliver, Petracca, Gawn Our bookends and midfield are elite. If we get the system right, there's no reason why our team can't win a flag next year. Time to put up. Next year the window is wide open. Edited November 13, 2020 by A F 5 Quote

Wishful thinking. 2017 turnarounds rarely happen for a reason. May's never played more than 17 games in a season. Brown needs to not only bounce back after a dreadful year but go to another level to get anything near what Riewoldt did that year. Petracca's the closest thing to Dusty but still a mile off him. But the biggest difference is the Tigers were recruiting for speed for the best part of a decade and after coaching against their personnel they finally got a game plan going. We've recruited for contested ball winners which is a failed strategy given how good the pressure is these days. Slow and unskilled players will turn the ball over under pressure and then it takes a whole lot of ball winning to keep getting it back enough times. I see more similarities with Port last year in the way they've turned around a middling side with a ball winning midfield in to something far more exciting. I don't think we have the backline and outside midfield class or enough grunt and aggression in the forward line to really scare teams. Of course the most vital thing for us to improve on to match contenders is our midfield playing selfless, skilled, super hard running footy 1 Quote

MadAsHell 4,217 Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 So I know we still have the draft and DFA period to go. But I feel we're far enough along to make some predictions in this spot now. FB: Lever, May, (one of Jetta, Lockhart, Chandler) HB: Hibberd, Tomlinson, Salem C: Langdon, Petracca, Fritsch - move to a wing HF: Melksham, Weideman, Harmes FF: Hunt, B. Brown, Pickett FOLL: Gawn, Oliver, Viney INT: Brayshaw, Jackson, Rivers, 22nd man* *22nd spot is a hard one to decide who should get it. Would love to see Jones given 6 opportunities here, maybe try some of the kids like Sparrow, Jordan, Baker, Spargo or one of this years draft picks pending the opponent we're up against. And maybe if we're up against a tall opponents Petty or Tom McDonald could get a game. 2 Quote

Reckon you may just be right Pickett. Although I do like him running and linking from half back, and continuing along. He's not an 'out here' guy like Langdon, who is able to hold position in space. 2 Quote

Baker also a chance but alot of work to do on his game. Quote

Rivers doesn't have a great tank. He's a good ball winner and smart around the contest. The wing wouldn't suit him. If he's to progress to half back it should be in to the on ball rotation. 2 Quote

Each season a team or player starts From scratch and can train and play practice game/s so well that he Can't be ignored. Yes Harry will do well to play Round 1 but he would be desperate to No doubt. Deep down Tommy likewise Imagine if the 2018 Tomny returned with Harry and BBB at full forward how good would our chances be fir the Top 4??? 1 Quote

"Darft Pick" should be "Daft Pick" The word is British informal English meaning stupid or insane. Of course Melbourne has made many daft picks. The excreciable Nield era was noted for them. Fortunately I think we are far more professional now and it would be unfortunate to label the player on the interchange bench as a daft pick, although at some time the description may be accurate. Backing Hunt in to be a consistent forward, not with much confidence though. If he can step up we will be so much more dangerous. Petty will make CHB his, watch this space. Hore to have a great season sweeping up and intercepting across halfback. We really need an experienced back up ruckman. Quote

This is how I would set up: 3 tall forwards (Brown, Weideman, Jackson) 3 small forwards (Pickett, Viney, Spargo) 3 medium forwards (Fritsch, Petracca, Melksham) 3 full time inside mids (Oliver, Brayshaw, Harmes) Petracca to split his time 50/50 between forward and midfield, Viney to split 75/25 forward midfield, Jackson to split 50/50 forward midfield (25% ruck, 25% inside mid) Harmes to go back tagging the best mid and then getting his own pill, melksham to go back to negating the best defender and then being linkman between midfield and forwards Jetta and Hibberd to lock down on small forwards, Salem and Rivers to rebound from half back, May Lever and Tmac can form really good defence and rebound Honestly reckon if everyone is utilised in the right position we can definitely contend for top 4 and a flag next year, bring it on. Not a bad configuration at all. There is plenty of talent, mobility and the linkages both offensively and defensively are quite evident. However, we all have some preferences and mine would be Hunt - he needs to be (IMO) in the team and preferably in the forward line, used from the interchange bench; I'd replace Spargo at this point with Hunt, and Hunt to be given a 'bit of' a roving utility role in that breath of absolute speed and kicking skills. (It is pleasing to see Tomlinson on the wing opposite to Langdon - he has the run and carry, nearly always in space, to assist the potency of the forward set-ups. I just hope the backmen can look for him, see him and exploit his 'space'-finding attributes in season 2021. Edited November 20, 2020 by Deemania since 56 2 Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 Lifted from the AFL website this morning. I reckon its about right except for Harmes on the wing. I'd throw Baker in from the get go to see whats he's made of. Use Harmes off the inter-change and AVB as an emergency. "The addition of Ben Brown from North will give Melbourne's forward line a different look, particularly if Luke Jackson can build on the promising start to his career. That leaves 2018 breakout star Tom McDonald in limbo after the club tried – and failed – to find him a new home. Adam Tomlinson looks best suited to a key role in defence, leaving a wing spot open that can be filled by James Harmes after he failed to fire in the backline in 2020. With speed and skill set to be a priority, Jayden Hunt adds pace on an attacking flank, while Charlie Spargo provides forward nous and pressure. Look for athletic wingman Oskar Baker to push into the side early in the season, but much-loved warriors Nathan Jones and Neville Jetta seem best suited to providing squad depth these days. Harry Petty and Marty Hore will add competition for places in defence, assuming their return to fitness after injury-ruined seasons. B: Jake Lever, Steven May, Michael Hibberd HB: Trent Rivers, Adam Tomlinson, Christian Salem C: James Harmes, Angus Brayshaw, Ed Langdon HF: Jayden Hunt, Sam Weideman, Christian Petracca F: Kozzy Pickett, Ben Brown, Bayley Fritsch R: Max Gawn, Clayton Oliver, Jack Viney I/C: Luke Jackson, Charlie Spargo, Aaron vandenBerg, Jake Melksham Emerg: Oskar Baker, Jay Lockhart, Nathan Jones, Tom Sparrow 2 Quote
Cheesy D. Pun 1,765 Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 We've got to add at least one more small forward. All of the forward lines put up here, still look way out of balance. I'd like to see Melksham moved to another position (except when a HBF requires a tag) and replaced with a genuine small forward (Bedford or incoming player). Our forward strategy is to pin the opposition defence in for repeat entries, however, we don't have the right cattle to get that done. If we had two (or even three) Kozzys, I think it would unlock our whole game plan. We need players that understand the running patterns (mostly unrewarded) required. That's why I'm not so sure about dropping a mid in there. It can be done but it would require a pre-season of training and education. 1 Quote
