He had a sustained run of form when the team was firing and before we started playing 3 games in a week in a tropical cyclone that was as good as any key forward in the comp not named Hawkins or Dixon. He was taking marks on gun defenders like Harris Andrews and Darcy Moore. 19 goals in 13 shortened games actually becomes 40 goals in 22 full length games. And whilst that doesn't sound much it takes a good forward to do much more than that these days. He has to make strides with his body to make sure he's durable enough to get through 22 full length games but if he does do that he'll be getting to more contests and finding more cheap ball as well. So it's a win-win. 9 1 Quote

So it's a win-win. I totally agree. Weid is on the way to being a very good player. He's a smart footballer, brave in the air, a beautiful kick and contrary to popular belief he's fine at ground level and a great creative handballer on both sides which is rare. He needed a mature partner in crime and that was supposed to be TMac. Jackson helped but then at the crucial time he got injured. Brown is useful but not as a key marking target. Weid flies against 2-3 tall defenders and Fritsch reaps the benefits - if only he could convert ... Next year with Jackson and Petty to draw defenders and, assist and a year's more growth into a 23yo body he will really establish himself. I get it that the FD is saying we need more mature forward targets but I cannot see any available where cost-benefit is delivered. 8 Quote

If there was a time for the tough to get going it was when LJ the rookie went down. This was the Weids chance to finally stand up and show some maturity after 5 seasons. Instead he was nowhere to be seen when we had a finals berth on the line and the bulk of our goals had to come from medium smalls and/or mids. It's a matter of trust and consistency. The Weid brings neither of those week in / out and goes missing for patches/matches far too often. Possibly a back up 3rd stringer at best. Time to look elsewhere. Couldn't have said it better. 3 Quote
adonski 13,271 Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 If Weid doesn't hand ball to Hunt in the goal square, this conversion is going a lot differently! 1 1 Quote

Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 Weid is going okay, i'm not too upset with where he's at. but he definitely needs a second tall to support him. in a perfect world McDonald would find some form and we would be fine 2 Quote
Supreme_Demon 4,143 Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 I wouldn't mind having a crack at trying to get Jeremy Cameron. I know it is highly unlikely though. I long for the days we were spoilt for choice with our key forwards being David Neitz, David Schwarz and Garry Lyon. Quote

Fritsch kicking straight is 40 goals a year and Weid is also a 40 goal player. Add in LJ and Pickett with 20 each and you have a reasonable forward line. Is Petty capable of adding twenty and driving the ball forward... I have no idea My concern is whether we will get enough goals out of Hannan, AVB and Melksham. Would be good if Oliver could get a few more a la Dangerfield 5 Quote

Would be good if Oliver could get a few more a la Dangerfield I think with improved forward craft the output of all of those forwards would improve quite a bit. To be honest i don't think we're going far as a side if any of those 3 are in our best 22 next year. i think it's time for Sparrow and co to step up and grab those spots. I think a better balance with Petracca forward and he could be worth another 25 goals as well. 1 Quote

I have always liked the look of him, but it is a good point that he needs it delivered on a platter. That takes skill, which we do not have. Quote
The Chief 697 Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 Carlton have too many too tall forwards and desperately need inside mids or Cripp’s is going to have a very short career. Trade Viney for McKay. Win win for both clubs Quote

I think the state leagues are a big gamble this year, as none have played any football. The AFL blokes were lucky they could play and train, the others haven’t at all Quote
