Paging @Yokozuna - any intel on Lipinski or Richards (I saw someone mentioned we might be into Lipinksi a while ago IIRC?).

Unsure of any trading or draft news unfortunately - that being said - I will see if I can find anything out (highly unlikely though, usually hear more news on this topic in previous years, but that’s when we are already out of the finals race!)

Add Brayden Fiorini back to the list. For some reason, he’s on the fringe at the Suns.  Against the Tigers last night, he played an excellent game on the wing.  Contested footy and outside run. Really got involved and won some key contests in the last quarter. I think he’s under contract but worth asking a question at year end. At 23, perhaps his best footy is ahead of him.

yeah 100% the most unfair system going around.

If said many times before the F/S rule is an absolute blight on the draft system. I get the romanticism of it but when it favours teams finishing in the top 4-8 it needs to balanced out - similar to the academies.

Not saying to completely eliminate it but there needs to be measures put in place if the FS prospect is in the top 10. It’s ridiculous to think Norf won’t get access to the best player going around. If the Darcy kid turns out to go Pick 1.

Except the AFL rules state you have to take a first round pick within a certain window.  Not sure of the exact numbers.

We used 2 of them in 2019

There are measures in place now though. The team must then take the player nominated with their next pick based on the points system, less a discount I believe of 25%.

It is much fairer than the old system that saw Geelong pick up blokes like Hawkins, Scarlett and Ablett with picks in the 40's and 50's.

Every team has benefited at different times with the F/S rule, remember getting Viney with a pick in the 20's?

I love the F/S rule and want it to continue as it is what makes our game unique. Not a huge fan of the acadmies though, however I do see the purpose in not football states like Queensland and NSW.

Oh wait, that was the Hindenburg.  Carry on.

Oh, the hilarity!

Pretty sure this is the funniest joke ever on DL.... how do I run a poll?

meanwhile, doubts already beginning about the quality of this year's draft crop

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/07/01/why-some-afl-recruiters-believe-the-upcoming-draft-could-be-a-bit/

It’s been a bit disappointing the recruiters are saying, the (national underage) championships are starting very shortly so we’ll get a good gauge on it.

Good thing we used a heap of picks the last few years.....

I don't think draft picks are that important to us at the moment. We need to continue to bolster our list with ready made players and add to the depth to have multiple cracks at the flag.

watch hunts last quater and then tell me we dont need maynard, should be firmly on the trade table at years end, completely cost us in that last quarter 3 times

I like Farrell from Port. Fiorini as mentioned already by someone. He’d be a good get. Pretty much any left footed, hard running wingman, would compliment our list. Ed Richards perhaps. Someone not getting a run in other sides but could compliment us, without busting the bank.

I know he’s bloody old and will probably sign again at Fremantle but bloody hell David Mundy is a good player and I would be more than happy to get him even for just a year.

That for sure but more for a tiring Hibbo. Wouldn’t have let Greene near it today.

Still need to think about a good ball user.

Touk Miller is apparently in contract negotiations with Gold Coast.

I'd put the feelers out. He's exactly what we need.

GC will offer a big 5 or 6 year contract worth about $600k a year. We are hardly close to being able to trade or offer anything in $$ to Miller. He’s definitely a star and was a bargain 2nd round draftee all those years ago.

His disposal  was horrendous snd he kicked the ball about 5,000 feet up in the air.
No thanks Will Powell was a available   this year and no one looked at him Would have hot him for nothing virtually snd is only in his early 20's!!!

Powell is a very good ball user and good pace.  Only 21.  Had contract extended. Signed up by the Suns until end of 2025.

Yes but he was in the same boat as Tmac - available for a sort of song!!

Given we showed interest in Isaac Smith, would we have a discussion with Steele Sidebottom.  He has great skills and I think is a free agent.  Pies have salary cap challenges.  He probably will want a 2 year deal as a minimum.  We are in the premiership window and his experience and skill would be a welcome addition.  Risk and reward.

Can't remember if Maynard played on him, would assume so, but Greene kicked 5 against Collingwood.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
