Isaac Smith isnt even that good. his kicking is highly suspect. definitely not worth a 3 year contract.

You think Oliver is a good kick.

That's really all that needs to be said re your opinion on kicking ability.

Really? Oliver isn't a bad kick. He kicks it out of packs, under pressure mlst of the time. And he does shank some he shouldn't. BUT it is very clear that he has a very good kick on him when he thinks about it, instead of blazing away.

He's really not. High ball drop and elaborate action. It's all a bit inside out and so he struggles to kick across his body. Doesn't back himself to hit leads. No real left foot either. He's not bad but he's miles from good.

I think it’s plainly obvious that we won’t win a flag unless we strengthen the quality of our wings. We saw what an amazing difference Langdon made this year, but he can’t do it alone. Our wings have been a rotating retirement village for unsuitable players.

Yes it would be lovely to get another 25 year old gun wingman like Langdon, but we need to be realistic about our salary cap and the amount of players we have out of contract next year that we desperately want to keep.
Smith might be a short gap filler but he’s proven and can’t do worse than the other options currently on our list. He will cost virtually nothing in terms of cap space and won’t compromise our draft position, so who can bloody dispute that?

There's no way if 3 clubs were bidding for him that he's not getting a fairly solid contract in terms of dollars as well as years. He's certainly costing us something, including the possibility of a some years where he cost money and provides almost nothing due to age.

But yeah, compare a few hundred grand of salary with a rookie, very late pick or delisted free agent who's a gamble to fill the role and the salary alone isn't a huge cost.

if the rating options are: excellent, very good, good, poor, then yes, oliver is a good kick.

this is true

but if the ratings were elite, very good, good, average, below average, and poor i think he'd be in the average band

his kicking improved the minute he started powering out of contests rather than handballing, hack-kicking

completely agree.. as others have said, high ball drop and a bit dumpy, but it comes with where he gets the ball.. if he could take a few steps and also work on his technique, that’d be ace

I couldn't care less about his kicking when under pressure. Its his inexplicable shanks when no one is on him (even when he has a free) that grinds my gears.

Anyway, sorry, I've derailed this thread enough.

Back to Smith. Good kick!

Disagree. His kicking at times recently has been hit and miss, but when you score full marks for the kicking test at the draft combine you're a good kick. Not many players achieve that.

Ti get to the next level he needs to kick more goals. And step up and kick some clutch ones.

His first challenge is to continue to get better with when he kicks and when he handballs. He struggles to punish the opposition with how much first use we get in the middle. I should watch tape of his mate CP5.
I think he can be better ‘getting’ release hands from Viney and co. and doing something with his ability to find space to deliver. He’s still 1 dimensional in close ‘if I get it I will be doing all these things, if my teammate gets it... well off to the next contest where I can get it...’

That might be unfair but that is my opinion.

3, 2 or even 1 year ago I would have jumped for joy at a 3 year contract. Now I'd be a bit skittish. I understand that we probably need to offer 3 to get the deal over the line but I fear that might be too many. Would prefer 2 with a trigger but I get that the player is just trying to milk the best deal.

We think Demonland may be a destination footy blog for members of the sports medical profession as well,  with the good Doctors Evil and Gonzo immediately springing to mind. Sure there are others out there too but memory presently eludes us...

... add Dr.D and drdrake to that auspicious list.

But not Dr Stephen Dank as it seems he is now a fugitive from justice.

Back on topic; Smithy will indubitably add a suave, urbane, ever so slightly debonair edge to wing play at the 'G just add the red V and navy blue long sleeves.

Jordan Lewis just said on SEN He had reached out to Isaac Smith to see if he wanted any counsel on the decision and he never heard back from him! lol. I would’ve thought if he was as close to selecting Dees as we’re made to believe you’d reach out to an old teammate who spent time at the club... he also said he understands that whilst the Hawthorn offer is 2 years the trigger for a 3rd is pretty easy.

One would think Jordan would have hinted at Smith coming across this morning if in fact he has made his decision as @Dr evilmade clear last week.

Perhaps Lewis isn't in the know. He may have contact with both Melbourne and Smith but that doesn't mean they are spilling any beans or he might be keeping both their confidences. Just because he is in the media doesn't mean he will automatically betray his friends/colleagues for browny points.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
