I went back and read the article again. Bartlett may be shrewder than we think. If they gave Goody a contract extension with performance KPI's ย in 2021 he has effectively covered the club if Goody stumbles. No coach will be sacked after 2020 given all the difficulties that have arisen.

Also don't forget she sits on the same panel as Ross Lyon each week on Footy Classified I am sure it is no co-incidence he gets a mention in talk about MFC coaching.ย

What you say has some merit OD, the only thing that worries me, is that if we start 2021 poorly Membership will be a trickle.ย
It all starts now. We have to do well Tomorrow Night. We have to show some fight, otherwise nobody will believe a word Goodwin or Bartlett says

Caro has most certainly 'faded' in terms of being close to what is going on in AFL circles these days.

I mean, one minute she says that people want Smith to challenge for presidency, before then saying he is focused on his firm and, therefore, won't be challenging.ย  So... what was the point of that?

In terms of Bartlett and the board, the article smacks of a few people not being happy with something Bartlett has done, so they have have complained to Caro and she's gone with an article.ย  She isn't shy about sinking the boots into Bartlett either.

The one thing, if true, that we can take from it is around Goodwin's contract and that he would need to meet certain criteria to trigger the final year in 2022.ย  That might mean that the club holds fire on him until they see how things unfold next season.ย  Things can change of course - roll over poorly in our last two games and we may have no choice but to sack him, but if that is true about his contract then I think we need to strap ourselves in for Goodwin to be in charge come next season.

Someone is backgrounding her. Interesting things happening at the circle K.ย

I would hope our club is calling BS on all the travel we had to do.ย

You have seen into the future 2021?

Seriously if we lose the last 2 games itโ€™s not going to be pretty. The only reason Wilson writes this stuff is because we leave ourselves wide open, again and again

this article is also so damming

Season on the line and we canโ€™t defend. Where did all Roosyโ€™s teaching go?

Yes that bit is strange. She attacks and then retreats

IMO Caro has disliked our club for years and has often written damaging articles aimed at hurting the club.ย

I agree. She and Schwab go right back and since then she has still been quick to attack, but a lot of it is our own fault.ย

That is not quite right, but I know what you mean.

The whole story hinges on an apparent scoop that past players are wrangling for change

So a few former players keen to instill true Melbourne people in the ultimate leadership roles at the club (in lieu of the AFL inserts from 2013/14)

Not all that surprising really is it?? Caro is excited by it, but she trades on others' agendas...Perhaps we should be more excited?

Certainly not Goodwin at the start of 2019, Why they jumped before season started amazed me then and still does.

We have form here though OD.ย  I recall at some point we put a bit of a caveat on a Daniher extension to his contract at some stage around the end of 2004/2005.ย  I can't recall the exact details/dates/timing but at the time i'm pretty sure it was Gardner who came out early in a season saying something along the lines of "we will need to see a big improvement between now and turning towards finals (ie., about round 12ish i think he said when pressed) before we agree to an extension of Neil's contract".

This was after like 4/5 losses from 5/6 matches or so early in the season. ย  Within about two rounds (ie., about Rnd 7), and we had clocked up a massive two wins in a row, for some reason that hurdle suddenly disappeared and the extension was announced!ย  I remember thinking at the time .. "what was the rush here?ย  How are we losing IF we wait a little longer to be more certain?".

Fast forward to the present and we now have Goodwin talking about ruthlessness.ย  Yes i realise he is mostly (or 100%) referring to the team itself.ย  However, it's pretty hard to bring this if the history off the field alone suggests the complete opposite.ย  As we've seen far too often over many decades at the MFC, we like to talk the talk a fair bit.

He made two other points in that discussion when questioned.

He stated that if he was in charge or had some say over what was happening on Monday night what would he have changed?ย  He said he would have thrown out the zoning once the heavy rain set in and gone man on man to make Freo accountable and worry them off the ball / switching and racking up easy possessions.

He was also asked about his playing days and what the general feel was like about what the issue was at the Demons (ie., inferring what was it that made them such an easy beat without actually saying such).ย  His response was something like...

"Get them on the outside.ย  We always felt if you can get it into the outer ring, set up for that, we could then run it away from the contest and were a very good chance of winning".

Yep. All stuff we here have talked about for 2 years RN

So if we haven't given up hope of Clarkson coming and Ross Lyon is an active target, doesn't that answer the question "is Goodwin the right guy." - Obviously the club doesnt think he is either.

Can you imagine if we had culturally stuffed up like richmond has, Caro would be front page everyday.

We are a soft target;ย underperformingย and unsurprisingly subject to coach, football dept and board murmuringsย

Selling the Leighoak club has turned out to be quite a shrewd move. He deserves more time because of that move alone. I thought his spray after the Port game was perfectly timed as well. I donโ€™t think Bartlett should be the focus at the moment at all. ย

There are always people looking to get on footy boards. Itโ€™s the easiest story in the world to peddle. Politics is a sh*tty business and I wouldnโ€™t be surprised if itโ€™s someone from the FD who fed this story to Wilson to take the spotlight of themselves.ย

What is shrewd about selling the Leighoak Club?

As is often the case, Wilson is not really wrong but you have to wonder why the obvious and inevitable scuffling at one club approachingย the end of a mostly disappointing season is worthy of a feature article by the Chief Football Writer?

Because a member of one of the factions is feeding her information to try and destabilise the club?

These "factions" are part of the problem and they can get stuffed as far as I'm concerned.

I've never voted in MFC board elections because whats the point, I wouldn't know one group from another or what they stand for or what their platform is. Most people would be voting against an incumbent rather than for anyone in particular and as far as I can see the board/Bartlett etc have managed the off field incredibly well. If there are issues with the MCC that is a problem because we need them in our corner but overall the only hiccup has been the 3 year extension for Goodwin but realistically he would have got 2 anyway. They've given the club an environment of stability and resources to be successful, the failure is on the footy department, not the President or board.

I really wish Peter Jackson had stayed on. Anyway, might as well wait for them to miss the finals againย before we start calling forย headsย to roll...ย

But in the same sentence she states that Smithy has decided to devote his energy to his law practise. Whatย point she is trying to make. There will be no challenge.

Exactly. Sheโ€™s stirring trouble.
Past players;ย influential, big donor supporters;ย MFC supporting MCC board members past and present; allย unhappy with the ย current performance of the Demons? Really? What a surprise?
Hey Steve Smith, mfc past player and recent past president of the MCC, successful lawyer; how about you run for president?

Yeah but no, Iโ€™m too busy with my law practice. Let that loser Bartlett work through this bad patch.

This is sh*t stirring with a capital S!ย

This article could have been written in any year of MFC's past, the way they have stumbled through the years. Just change the names. Same old same old.ย

If the club are relying on increased or stable numbers of membership next year, they might be heading for a rude shock. The team are not doing themselves or the club any favours.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... itโ€™s time to discuss this weekโ€™s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliverโ€™s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line โ€ฆ Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the clubโ€™s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the clubโ€™s perspective, and the teamโ€™s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarksonโ€™s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed โ€” roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.ย  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
