Neitz 9 in 2002

Watched this last night put me in a better mood. It really shows a contrast in how the game is played between "generations" take me back to the games in the early 2000's any day of the week rather than the circus which is the modern AFL.

I was there that day.

What a combo it was - Neitz kicking 9 and smashing Carlton off the park.

Wouldn't Sam Weiderman like that type of delivery to him.  Nearly all those goals was from an elite kick to a leading forward, our current crop of players would have missed him.

Neitz was a match winner and our last star we have had

Miss the Daniher years now. They were a rollercoaster but gave us some great footy and some hope. I'd take finals every second year with a grand final appearance over being cellar dwellers every year!

That video shows the exact two types of player we are lacking. The two biggest holes on our list - a quality tall forward and a quality kicker in the midfield.

Yze - a classy midfielder with good kicking skills who accurately hits up leading forwards.

Neitz - a strong marking target with confidence who takes the responsibility of the set shot and kick goals consistently.

What is this rubbish? A full forward leading into space and his team mates honouring the lead with precise delivery? Bah, it'll never catch on.

Yze wasn't the only one.  Brad Green could hit those targets as well, and Trapper Johnstone wasn't a slouch at it either.

We had a really good mix in that side that year.  I loved the addition of Peter Vardy to that forward line but he just couldn't keep himself fit for long enough to have a consistent impact.  I've always wondered how much further we could have gone that season had Farmer stayed.

Wow ... teams could score 77 points in just 4 quarters of footy? And what about the other team? Must be a typo or misprint.

Well, you can forgive such behaviour ... they didn't play to systems in those days.

I saw the craziest thing ... a forward being held off the ball by his opponent and getting a free kick. Like watching Huddo kick a flat punt ... so quaint and old fashioned.

Those guys must have had so many learnings to do after a display like that.

watching this made me wonder this hypothetical.

If you could put one ex-demon from the last 20 years into this current MFC team - who would you chose?

Neitz would be a very popular pick but we'd still need to address that outside mid!

Neitz or Yze/Johnstone.

Tall forward or a capable outside mid with elite kicking skills.

Neita simply to fill our massive leadership void.

Wow. I was there that day. Kouta was wearing a huge Caliper on his leg.
Spent the day giving Carlscum Supporters a hard time, they knew they were despised.

great day

Oh what a beautiful day this was! Led well, marked everything and his set shooting was at its peak. Was in Level 4 at the La Trobe end, I think Robbo took a screamer down that end from memory? Bliss.

Awesome game from Neitz.  I prefer his other 9 goal bag though,  it was a Friday night at the MCG vs the Tigers in round 2 and if I recall he didn't kick a goal in Round 1 and certainly made amends.

Yeah that’s when footy was great. You forget how good the skills were on Yze.

Midfielder - I'd take Yze Or Trav Johnstone. Football perfection watching them kick.

Power Forward - I'd take the Ox. I know his knees let him down, but talk about someone to take a match by the scruff of the neck and rag-dolling the carp out of his opponents.

And because I'm really annoyed at everything Melbourne just at the moment, I'll take Ray Biffin and Rodney Grinter to dish out some pain to anyone who gets too close, with special regard for Essendon and Collingwood.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
