This is interesting but I dare say Spargs pressure acts will be far and above Bennell

Why?

You are not comparing him to much RN. Still says a lot about About Spargo.

My lips are sealed OD.  He is kicking goals at 100% accuracy at the moment so who am i to judge.  But yes, it would be nice if he (and others around him) were kicking a few more of late.

Delicious 89 posted.

OMAC - just doesnt have any enthusiasm or drive to be out there always losing his man like with Membrey late in the game

So under this analogy we drop someone who had our second highest 1% and a reasonable number of possessions for a defender purely because a fwd  got a 2 yard break and the ball delivered to him on a platter.

As I have mentioned on another post. OMac could have 20 possessions, 10 marks and 10 spoils and still not meet the criteria of some people purely because he is OMac ,the team player. May & Lever are a lot mor comfortable with him in the side.

So on that basis we get rid of May because he got outmarked by Marshall twice late in the game. !!!!

I agree with this

Omac was left high and dry by the midfield when Membrey marked late in the game. There was zero pressure in Hill waltzing through centre square

Omac did alright for most of the game, plays his role, takes a tall forward, compliments the 1 on 1 style of May vs #1 Forward and Intercepts of Lever

All up I think he balances that Backline well

Rusty What bubble are we out of ?

We are in a hub in Qld snd for nearly  a week at Cairns I believe then back to Qld .

What  bubble are you talking about? The Gold  Coast one?

Also your changes :

Lockhart  should come back If we want  Speed and run and carry He is prob the best defender to give it consistently And we usually select 7 defenders ( prev counting Harmes)  but Tommo can provide some flexibility along with Brown.

Reckon no harm in trying Locky on the wing or even Rivers. Both run well and are quick.

Think maybe  Kossie for a rest Bedford ? To replace him. Or ANB

Vanders needs managing and either Hannan or Melksham replaced by  Harley snd Fritsch.

Need a good team effort to get points possibly 5:6/7 goal win.

Lets get in the 8 Dees !!

shouldn't play Jones the break is too short and maybe bring him in the for the Freo game or not. I'm sure that poor kick that cost a goal will inspire him to make every post a winner.

Agree, freshen Max up for Freo.

Why is no one mentioning Bennell? He is fesh and can snag a couple from a few possies and is a good scoring assist player.

We were desperate to get him right and now he doesn't even seem to be in the equation.

Personally I think we need to make a few changes and bring in several fresh players, who will be able to run the game out.

Then again what do I know, I thought we would be too slow against the Saints.

Not that it matters but i'm on board Mr Leg.  If he's fit and ready i'd be bringing him straight in for Kozzy (managed) this week.  A touch of flare and poise around the drop inside 50 and just outside the arc would be very nice this week ty.

The short turnaround time and the presumably humid weather in Cairns suggests to me the possiblity a couple of players will be managed. Given Goodwin was at great pains a few weeks ago to say that he saw no need for us to "manage" players, those that are outs will be either listed as "injured" or "omitted". Nevertheless, whatever label is given, I expect about 4 changes.

Out: Hibberd (injured, and a genuine one), Pickett (omitted), Hannan (omitted), vandenBerg (omitted)

In:   Harmes, Fritsch, ANB, Hunt

I suspect O Mac keeps his spot to allow Lever and May some more freedom. We are truly lucky that May can play on talls, smalls or as an intercept player.

I also think Melksham played his best game for a few weeks, as did Jones (other than an obvious howler) so can't see them missing and Spargo did excellent defensive work. J Wagner had a horrible first quarter but turned it around and I think will get another game before Hibberd comes back for the second Cairns game.

Jones has to be managed either this game or the game against Freo.

Save Bennell for the Freo game, even if hes ready to go now.   If we play him  vs Swans  we may have to rest him vs Freo anyway off the short break.

If hes raring to go he will also need some continuity going and after the Freo game theres no more short breaks.

I don't have access to pressure acts inside 50 D11 (Bin....anyone?) but....

Tackles inside 50 (2020 season averages)

Bennell  0.4

Spargo  0.4

Edit* ... Just found them! ...

Pressure Acts inside 50

Bennell 8.8

Spargo 11.4

Out of interest do you have pressure acts overall not just in F50?

Why not, he has been poor since the North game.

A total of 15 touches and 1 goal the last three games (averaging 5 touches and 0.3 goals), and his pressure has fallen away    Should be dropped on form, and I would bring Bedford in to keep the team balance right.

There is so much talent available and if in their correct roles/positions for a change, we could smash the Feathered Ones. There should be some handful of list changes for the game and Max must be rested. It is time to re-Release the Beast into rucking duties. Frustratingly difficult to select/suggest 'who, what, when, where and why' this week but innovation from the coaching panel/selection panel could put us in a great position. Carna Dees!

Not having a go mate, but I have Oliver 1st in the comp for pressure acts (bloody brilliant effort), Petracca 15th and Viney 21st.

No Love for Harley Bennell?? I would definitely play him this week if fit!

We know and then you'd be whinging that  Goody got his tactics wrong and Swans ran freely coast to coast with no pressure

Feel it's about time to give Hunt a chance.
Maybe he's been watching how Ed Langdon goes about playing and thinking to himself, "Hey, I could do a lot of that, plus I have just as good a bandanna ? ?".
Maybe we'd be pleasantly surprised with Hunt on the other side from Ed.

Thursday forecast for Cairns is 28 degrees and 77% humidity....  meanwhile Freo will have an extra days break for our game and wont have played in the tropics the game before.

Cheers AFL.

Hopefully account for Sydney and that gives an extra opportunity to get used to the conditions.  We have travelled and won every time out of the hub, so looking forward to the Cairns games

I must applaud Goodwin with team selection last week, matching 4 talls (May, Oscar, Lever and Tomlinson) on Membery, Marshall, Battle and King. I see a lot of people not happy with Omac but he had to play due to Saints tall fwd structure. Had no other options

There are always options.

My bad D11 .... that was overall NOT inside 50!  The furthest i can drill down on that stat is...

Forward Half Pressure Acts  (2020 averages)....

Bennell 7.0

Spargo 9.4

They're pretty close in a number of their general stats to be honest.

To be honest Harley's form his last 2 games was pretty ordinary.

Agree. Can’t run fast. Looks scared to get involved in a physical way. Worried about his calves. Very good skills but limited by injury fears

Can't blame him being a tad cautious MNL.  He should be able to push through that the more games he plays.  Strangely enough a few bumps and bruises (even accidental) might be the tonic he needs to get there.

imo its pretty obvious this week

Hannan makes way for Fritsch

OMac for Lockhart

AVB out for Harmes

if necessary; Hibberd (inj) for Bennell or Jetta depending on where you want to play Tomlinson against small swans

Pickett out more likely than Hannan

I dunno, I feel like the Saints game was a big chance for Hannan and he really didn’t do enough for me. Hannan is kind of a mixture of mid/pressure forward so I think he would make the most sense to be dropped for balance of the forward line.

How long has AvB been on thin ice and continued to survive? To not lay a tackle at all and be relatively unsighted for the game is really poor. I really would like to see Goodwin bring Harmes in to take his spot and rotate himself, Jones, and Viney through the middle/half forward line.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
