Ever: Matty Whelan. No fuss toughness, always shepherded, massively underrated IMO.

Current: Would change week to week tbh, but probably Steven May. Great kick, super reliable defender, gets around his team mates and seems to have that ruthless competitiveness to him that we've lacked for so long.

Forgot abot this bloke. Nice blast from the past.

At present Im thinking about Sean White probably cos Lever's cookie crumbler reminds me of him. One of the toughest dfenders MFC ever had.

Also Fritta reminds me a little of that famous number 2. (B4 I get canned .....mostly in his body size and athleticism).

All time fave without question is Mr Jim Stynes  who unfortunately like Sean Wight, taken too early.

Had the pleasure to meet him once. Jim Stynes was a wonderful bloke and gave his all for the club, both on and off the field.

Presently, I think I would put Max down as my currrent fave. For the same reasons just mentioned for Mr Stynes.

Went to THAT GAME  when he kicked NINE.... all in the  2nd against the filth. Was truly magical stuff that day. Was a one man excitement machine and alone was worth the price of admission (which in the good ol days was probably a fiver and you didnt need to ring your accountant to see if you coild buy a beer).

Colossal error, trading Thompson ... in a weak team at the MFC, he would have continued to contribute significantly to our needs for success. He played for such a long time, once gone, absolutely fit almost forever.

Not our choice. Scott & family had a falling out with Neal Daniher - He went home for family reasons.

My favourite player as a kid was Stephen Febey. I liked that he wasn’t a superstar, but someone who worked hard to contribute to the team. I also liked the number 21. He also had a blonde-tipped mullet for a while which was pretty cool.
I remember all the other kids teasing me at little league that a) I followed the Dees and b) I had the number of a no-name toiler on my back.

Hard Call.

Ever; As a young bloke who just missed the glory years the players that keep me a life long Dee were; Ray Biffin, never took a backward step and I loved his games against Peter McKenna over the years. Same with Matthew Whelan,  and what got me very excited was the centre line of Wells, Alves & Flower. Never forget the goal Alves kicked from the wing at Windy Hill just before half time , it set us up to win , which was the first and only time I had ever seen us beat Essendon out there.

Current ; May (see Biffin) and Petracca, Oliver, Viney & Brayshaw  are starting to give me the same enjoyment.

Loved  watching Stynes Lyon and Jako.

Current - Clayton Oliver.
Will finish his career as the best midfielder to ever don the red and blue. He's the best ball-winning midfielder in my lifetime and still has so much potential to become an even more damaging player. If he reaches his potential then he'll be a league superstar. He's already well on his way with multiple BnFs and All Australian at such a young age!

Past - Travis Johnstone.
Smooth mover and a sublime kick, I still miss him firing lasers onto Neitz's chest. We haven't had a player of his class since. He was tagged his whole career and yet still led the league for years in effective kicks and inside 50s and score assists. He was a big game player too, was always amongst our best in finals. That 2002 semi-final against Adelaide is still the best and worst match I've attended.

Other past favorites - Allen Jakovich, Jeff Farmer, David Schwartz, Stephen Tingay, Adem Yze.

Me too.  My kids wonder why I always bring up a finals loss as one of the highlights of following the dees.  Travis that day, in the 3rd quarter in particular, was insanely good.  40 pts down to 17 up I think, only to run out of legs in the last.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
