It will be similar to the Hannebery trade.  Injury history, in-contract (3 years to go), in and out of the side and was traded for peanuts.  The pick swaps made it look a  goodish deal but it was peanuts for a player with his honours:  The Swans have traded Hannebery and pick 28 to the Saints, and received pick 39 and St Kilda's 2019 second-round pick in return.  ie effectively a late 2nd round pick but the Swans got his $800,000k salary off their books.

Not saying we will get the equivalent of a late 2nd rnd pick, just that the club will probably be happy to get TMac's salary off the books.

Exactly. Clearing up Tmac's salary (or most of it) creates opportunities elsewhere. Greater leverage to go for a better outside mid, running back or key forward than we would have previously

If Zach Merrett is on the cards as a potential option for us and we're not throwing the kitchen sink at him i'd be staggered.

He's EXACTLY what we need. not only does he add to our inside midfield depth, he can do what our current players can't and move to a wing or half back and be extremely damaging.

Bombers would likely want a significant deal to get him, especially if we're also looking at Saad

If Viney left Via Free agency and we got Band 1 compensation which would currently be pick 10, that might kick off a conversation

Agree, but I'd be staggered if Viney leaving got us pick 10. Don't want him to go, however IMO that would be a steal

4 years at 600k for a team outside the 8 to lose a former captain would very likely net us band 1. not saying that's the correct band for what Jack Viney is worth but based on other players similar to that who have left, that's about right. though i think jack may also be a restricted free agent? so potentially we might even be able to force a trade?

I reckon it would more likely be end of first round pick which is a very handy chip to have during live trading so has a premium attached to it.

Yes, i read on the afl site Derek Hines talking about the value of top 30 picks this year given the academy/fs numbers and teams shuffling picks to generate points. There might be good opportunities for clubs without these linked players to move up the order

I wasn’t privy to the actual interview but apparently Alan Richardson dropped Polec’s name on SEN. Did anybody else catch the interview and any other names he mentioned?

Interesting that we’d be targeting another winger. Tomlinson not to fill that role anymore? Oskar Baker not worth developing in that position? Thought he showed promise there against the GWS.

I like it.

Tomlinson won’t work as a wingman, so he slots into defence as an upgrade on OMac/Smith as the other tall and we go back to the well for another quality wingman or midfielder with more polish. Baker looked ok, but certainly wouldn’t be putting all my chips in on him.

I think Zach Merret would be a nice compliment to Trac and Oliver, he’s a very different player and could play that traditional centre man role, ala Craig Bradley.

He was asked about Polec specifically and he didn't/wouldnt comment on Polec but said outside run would be a target.

Barrett suggesting disgruntlement towards the club from Hurley and Hooker too. You have to wonder if one of them could be squeezed out and involved in a McDonald trade. Hurley would be a decent 2nd tall in defense to plug in for a couple of years, and the club was vocal about chasing him in the past. Either way, let's get Saad.

Would be a dream, but can't see it. Hurley is 30, so they can't exactly ask the world for him.

That'd kick off a conversation for one of them, but not two of them, unless we can get the Saad deal done with the second rounder we have. Why not put the future first rounder on the table too? I know it's likely to be around pick 9-10, but I think most of us are in agreement that we need to be aggressive here and plug needs.

Saad gives us the run off half back and Merrett gives us another winger and genuine midfield rotation.

If we get a second or third rounder for Tom McDonald, maybe that gets a deal done for Hurley?

Such a blue sky junkie at this time of year, AF.

Probably down to the uncertainty around TPP, list numbers running quite deep into the season. Players, their agents and clubs probably (smartly) waiting to see what the landscape looked like before making calls to stay or follow the money/security elsewhere. Still don't know for sure what list sizes are and, accordingly what money is absolutely on offer.

Yep spot on.

I have found a lot of these decisions get made a lot earlier than people believe.

Just reading an article posted on Bomberblitz about the possible trade of Daniher to Sydney.

It mentions that Sydney are likely to request his medical records and that Bombers are likely to say no on the basis that it is their IP.

If it is true that the club owns the player's records then this is something that the AFLPA should take up.

Amazing post the drugs saga that this could be the case.

PS Bomberblitz don't seem to have heard of copyright the way they post whole articles. It doesn't list who wrote it but I think it was Foxsports.

To move from a team of mediocrity they need to get rid of mediocre players. You're only as good as your worst player on the day. So they just HAVE TO get rid of both McDonald bros. Useless. Zero form, zero competitiveness, zero skill. Might have stamina, but that's pushing it.

Bundle them up with a couple picks, the Wagner bros, ANB and Smith, then go find a key forward who actually makes a contest and a clean kicking half back flanker. Wishful thinking, but take a 'King' type forward, and a Luke Ryan type from Freo to compliment Salem, and I believe we'd be set, albeit with a 'ruthless' mindset...

Thanks for the update:

I've been a believer that Tom can get back to form, not necessarily his 2018 goal scoring form but enough to play a key role as a tall in our fwd line while Weideman and Jackson develop.

Then we can put our money and picks into finding the wingman we sorely need or a top small fwd.

In reading the whole article it seems that Tomlinson has taken Oscar's role in the backline which wasn't on the cards early in the season.  Hope Oscar finds another club.

Its also interesting that GWS have reservations about Preuss:  "The Giants have queries about Preuss’ ability to cover the ground and spread. He is a monster of a man at 206cm and 114kg".

Lines up with what I posted about him weeks ago being unhappy with the way his body was handled by the club the past two years and adding weight to his body shape which made his foot problems harder to manage. Heard he was seeking a trade too, so if that bit of info is accurate then looks like he and the club have had mediation and come to an agreement that suits both sides.

I think the more likely thing is he realised there is no interest in him. Glad to hear they have acknowledged this was an issue and fingers crossed he can resemble something close to the 2018 version of himself.

How they thought bulking him up made sense is beyond stupid. His greatest strength was his endurance. He was never going to be exceptionally mobile or athletic. So they made him put on muscle mass which would have made his feet worse and made him even slower. Christ.

A 2018 version of TMac could actually fit nicely into our forward line with Weideman and Jackson.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
