I really donā€™t like us constantly calling our players ā€˜spudsā€™.Ā  PagingĀ Werridee,Ā youā€™veĀ have made it abundantly clear via umpteen postsĀ in this thread alone, thatĀ you think he is one (a spud) but remember he is oneĀ us, trains hard,Ā bleeds red and blueĀ everyĀ time he represents us in battle. Ā Give CharlieĀ a chance ? you never know he might surprise us all.

I want the best 22 in the side not the worst 22. Spargo is in the worst 22 he makes our team worse I can't stand that.

Ā

Iā€™m taken back to the start of 2019, many people begging for Pruess to be selected. Goodwin has no idea, etcĀ
Ā

andĀ then Pruess played a couple of games and everyone went quiet

Preussy must be feeling like a right plonker forĀ coming to Melbourne. Needs to seek a trade ASAP. He should be playing at the top level.

Out of interest, were you asking for Spargo to be dropped when he played most games when we made it to a prelim?

the kid is 20. He might not make but how about giving him a chance. He has proven he can at least be handy. I admit he was poor last year

I think we will share the ruck, Tom at the centre bounces, Jacko up forward and Tomlinson down back.

I don't think so.Ā  Would've named Pruess instead of T-Mac if they were only looking for T-Mac toĀ  fill the centre bounce / square ruck duties surely.Ā  But then again.

Tomlinson can't ruck to save himself from what i've witnessed, nor shoukd he be expected to,Ā but happy to be proven wrong.

I would hope he would admit it as well (and admit he played an awful game vs WC). Of the games to give him a run this one probably makes the most sense.Ā

Iā€™m not stoked he was picked, I wouldā€™ve thought there would be others in front, but in some of the recent scratch matches his name has popped up. This is his chance, he takes it or he doesnā€™t.Ā

This should also be a kick in the bum to others such as Hunt.Ā

He was carried in 2018 he showed his worth for the last year and half. I think the reason why he is in is because they dropped\managed Bennell and they want another forward and Spargo is the only forward left.Ā

Don't want to upset the developing forward line synergy between Weid and Jackson so TMac to take the hit outs then tag Goldstein around the ground. Just needs to compete and stop him dominating.

I think the Weid will second ruck. Tommy permanent forward. Key backs don't ruck Tomlinson won't ruck. Jackson to ruck back and midfield like Gawn. Weid to ruck forward and a little bit in the middle when Jackson needs a break.

It's only one week. Jackson needs to ruck wether we like it or not. Tommy can't ruck.

Enough already. We get it, you don't rate him. No need to repeat it 10 times over.

The way you talk about our players ('Jones a has-been') is pathetic.

Criticism and discussion of a player's shortcomingsĀ is fine, but repeated three-word posts that say 'X is a spud' contributes absolutely nothing to the discussion.Ā Ā

Won't argue that Hunt wasn't handy last season.Ā  His stats are proof of that.

But he is well off the boil this season.Ā  Happy to back in the Spargo selection until late tomorrow night when he doesn't do much and I eat some delicious humble pie.Ā ;)

I would much prefer that those of us who dont rate Spargo be eating the humble pie post match.

I have never been wrong about anything in my life but im told there is a first time for everything.

You shouldn't be a mod you don't allow opinions.

Why is Pruess on the list if you donā€™t play him this week when Max is down, Pruess is available and you are facing an inform physicalĀ monster in Goldie? I suppose we are going to sacrifice TMac physically against Goldie, not sure why.Ā

Thereā€™s a big differenceĀ between giving your opinion and repetitively shouting into the void.Ā

It's got nothing to do with being a mod. You're not going to get banned for posting like a primary school kid.Ā

I just don't like seeing MFC champions disrespected (Jones) and other players repeatedly abused ad nauseam (Spargo).Ā

I was the first to callĀ Lockhart to miss this game, i'm surprised they didn't bring in Nev as his direct replacement as a lockdown small defenderĀ but i'm happy to see Rivers get another game asĀ has great dash with aĀ good leg.Ā

I would of preferred Bedford over Spargo, but i'm not sure he travelled with the team.Ā

Looks like a pretty settled team overall. I'm interested to see what impact Brayshaw will have with extended minutes in the midfield.Ā

We need to beat these mongrels... they've owned us for too long!!! Go Demons!!

I've got the bloke on ignore so I missed it, but I feel slightly chuffed that he referred to me as a clown.Ā

Always pleased to please.

Pretty big game a win will see us jump to 9th a lose really will be the end of any finals for us.

Ā

I don't have a super strong opinion either way on these players, but in similar-ish roles:

ANB Round 2 - 9 disposals , 1 mark, 2 goals, 1 tackle, 5 score involvements, 0 turnovers, 0 clangers = Dropped.

Bennell Round 10 - 5 disposals, 0 marks, 1 goals, 2 tackles, 2 score involvements, 0 turnovers, 1 clanger = Dropped.

vandenBerg Round 10 - 6 disposals, 2 marks, 0 goals, 2 tackles, 1 score involvement, 4 turnovers, 3 clangers = Selected.

One of those vB clangers was the free reversal that cost us a goal, the kind of blunder other players have been dropped for by Goodwin.

Now I get circumstances come into it and stats don't tell the whole picture, but I find it hard for anyone to argue Goody doesn't play favourites at selection in the face of this. Even Gawn was talking about it post-match. This is the same Goodwin who every week talks about our 'basic errors' and 'forward connection' but says 'the effort was there'. So why is the prototype of those problems getting picked automatically no matter what he does?

For clarification; that's in a non sexual way. (Don't want BBO getting the wrong idea).

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

Itā€™s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the Ā Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measlyĀ 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?Ā  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where theyā€™ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sundayā€™s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonā€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyā€™s three matches and, with Melbourneā€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekā€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardā€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnā€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamā€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneā€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season.Ā There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight.Ā Since that game, the Demonsā€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
