Don't agree with this at all.

For so long coaches have been made scapegoats. If this is true what you say that our players are uncoachable then what an absolute disgrace. Smacks of absolute arrogance from our players on the back of zero success.

This isn't the coaches fault here, its the players. Our culture [censored] sucks and its record speaks for itself.

I think your comments here are spot on and I have felt that as a club we have been like this for a very long time.

It's also why I see it as pointless bringing in experienced players from other clubs under the theory that we are in a position to have a crack at a flag. I reckon our players are so far off from showing the intensity and fight required for long enough to be a threat to anyone in big games that it'd be a complete waste. My view is we're better off moving on any player who isn't fully committed to doing what is required to turn this club around, along with those making big money and delivering very little, and going to the draft again (albeit a bad time to be doing that) in the hope that we eventually get a group together who are motivated to take responsibility for making this club good again.

Well going off this quote by McCartney at the start of the year I think there is a merit to @Roost it far comment.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/coupler.foxsports.com.au/api/v1/article/amp/afl/afl-2020-afl-melbourne-demons-brendan-mccartney-clayton-oliver/news-story/f1ea160c82ebe5c4f501d4201fbc4e4d

“So ‘Clarry’ was just so headstrong, which for some coaches can be a real turn-off you know they can think this kid’s not gonna listen so he’s not gonna make it,” he said.

“Why was he headstrong? There’s a way to connect with Clarry, people like Clarry and there’s a way not to, but I was pretty strong with him, pretty direct; sent him off to get feedback from a raft of people and not only was it resounding in some areas it was consistent.

“I said ‘so this isn’t made up mate’”.

The anecdote refers to when Oliver started which was 5 years ago.  It doesn't mean he still is:    “...‘Clarry’ was just so headstrong, which for some coaches can be a real turn-off ..."

My read is that coaches need to find what makes each player tick to get their best.  Macca found the right buttons to press with Oliver and it showed in his performance.

We have a coaching panel befitting a bottom 4 team so I'm not sure why some posters (not yourself) let them off the hook.  Oliver and all our players deserve the best coaches; coaches that know how to motivate diverse individuals not coaches that want players who do as they are told to make their jobs easier or as Macca says who 'can be a real turnoff!'

If coached properly we have a lot to look forward to with Clarry.  Macca:  "...Oliver hasn’t even scratched the surface of his potential..." and rated him with Selwood "...for competitiveness, his drive to win and compete...and ...we haven’t seen anywhere near the best of him yet, there’s a lot more to come."

The sooner we get coaches that can work with each player's personalities to get the best from them the sooner we will rise up the ladder.

I agree in part with this dazzle, but I think the culture is set across the entire club.  From the board to the coaches and to the players.  They all share some responsibility here.

On 3AW yesterday Leigh Matthews said the CEO is the most important appointment and everything flows from there including the coach. We were clearly blessed having Peter Jackson and hopefully Gary Pert is a capable operator too - time will tell.

Matthews seems to have learnt a lot in his time as a Brisbane board member, not least of all that the board shouldn't meddle in Operations.

Soft cap mate. Have to reduce wages. I reckon Richardson will take the reigns here.

I love when Demonland gets back to the eternal nature vs. nurture debate. I lean toward the genes side of the ledger, but that may well be a product of my upbringing.

You are not alone, IMO you need to start with quality then the nurture part is not as hard.

Yep, and I apologized for that. Chances are I read it wrong. TBH I just saw "Egan" and just automatically thought he was gone as it seems weird to get a message saying he's staying. I went back to check some messages so I could post something in another thread and I saw that message about Egan and realized I posted the wrong thing, so I came back on here to apologize and correct it.

I get that on Demonland most people would rather just play the man than admit a mistake.

Don't take it to heart.

Care to divulge some info on your sources or at least what circles they mix in?

You might be taken more seriously if you shed some light.

Have explained previously a few times, have a close mate who chats to a bunch of former Dees, some who are still involved at the club.

Not up to me if you choose to take me seriously, talk footy or hang with the trolls and play the man. If you think my posts aren't worth your time then just block them. I don't understand the mentality of your mates here (who are now ALL blocked finally) that like to follow people around on a footy forum taking pot shots at people they don't know.

I've posted enough things here that have been true that the people who are genuinely here to talk footy will take it on board. If you wanna talk footy I'm all ears.

No worries.

I'll get the thread back on topic.

I think we've missed McCartney's presence at the club enormously and it's time we bring in some quality around Goodwin.

We need some fresh faces, ideas and people who command genuine respect so that some of those wayward players on our list get back on the straight and narrow.

I understand that positions will be reduced but we need some quality personnel in and around our playing group if we're any shot at some success.

100% mate. McCartney seemed to balance out the Goodwin 'nice guy, corporate speak' vibe IMO. He was hard on the players, but he genuinely loved them and wanted them to be their best versions. Also think Jennings was a loss for us and potentially Rawlings too. We didn't really replace them with equal quality I reckon.

Plapp, Mathews and more will be gone, Yze and a couple of other quality names will come in, it has the potential to turn around quickly if it gels. There seems to be big changes going on everywhere at the club, from the board down, so I take heart a bit from that that they're not just sitting on their hands.

I feel for Plapp, I liked him. Did a good job at Casey, did the best he could with our non stoppage mid game and I thought he improved the forwards a lot this year. Just a young bunch of forwards with an inconsistent midfield made it hard for consistent results.

The midfield coach had to change. Whether that’s shuffling the existing coaches or bringing someone new.

We waste Gawn. We’re lazy to set up. Players crowd the footy. There’s no creative handballing. Oliver’s refused to use his legs and plays hot potato with 1m nothing handballs.

Joel Corey I believe is out at the dogs. He was the dogs stoppages coach and they are brilliant with how they use the ball. And an unselfish player (as was Matthews) who dealt with a lot of prima-donnas at Geelong

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
