I don’t mind Hudson normally - he is an actual commentator in a world of dopey meathead ex-footballers. Lyon and Brown were far more insufferable than Hudson.

That said, his comment around the celebration with Bennell in what was clearly an emotional moment was a dreadful call that demonstrated he clearly wasn’t reading the play. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume Jonno Brown’s constant grunting Neanderthal attitude had worn him down and created a judgment lapse.

Agree. Hudson should have highlighted the team bond around Bennell.  He missed it. Poor form.

Loved Hannan's game, but that's a bit of a common theme.

Thought Harmes was much more effective playing on the ball and in the forward line, so very glad to see we didn't waste a whole season with fitting a square peg in a round hole down back.

Was also really impressed with Harley's game.  Although he didn't tear the game apart, he always looked like he had time and space and used almost all of his disposals very effectively.  Would have had quite a few score involvements and Iike Hannan, I think he makes our forward line function much better, because he kicks it to good spots to the advantage of his team mates.

Didn't think Nev was outstanding, but I don't think we should write him off as a spent force just yet.  Hibbard looked that way just a month or two ago and he has really turned it around.  Particularly with O Mac back there, I think our backline gelled better and was more predictable to each other last night, which is very important.

I reckon Hannan is interesting. Since coming in he’s played very low possession games - 7, 10, and 8 disposals, but it in each game he gets involved in one or two crucial score involvements. I can’t help but feel there will come a game where he doesn’t manage those couple of critical involvements and he will seem like a complete passenger.

I think he still needs to get more of the ball before I’m comfortable with fully relying on him as a flanker.

Like pretty much most of his 2019, but I think it's pretty clear he was playing injured last year.

Asides from his possessions, I thought his chase and tackle was pretty good last night.

People decry that we don't have enough pace, but Hannan is deceptively fast and combined with his footy smarts make him best 22 in my book.

Clayton Oliver needs to do 2 things to elevate his game.

1) Wear contact and delay handballing it till the receiving player is clear

2) Stop leaning back on his kicks and kicking around corners

Guy has too much talent to not have more impact.

Mays disposal is starting to be a real concern, some horrible errors. but he  was there in the clinches at the end along with lever. Kozzie looking like SUCH a prospect and dare I say it, we are definitely a better side with Omac back in the team 

Pity CP5 did not nail the follow up centre clearance by hitting up Weed, but instead went too deep and gave us an example of what everyone had been complaining about, but yes his work was that of a beast.

On May, interesting to see in the stats that he led - by a long way - metres gained, ahead of CP5, Clarrie and Viney.

I just want to join in the Anthony Hudson bollocking. He was so turgid for Rankine that he seemed to forget completely Bennell's story and what his goal represented. 

But it's not just a misjudgement as others have noted. It's part of a pattern of commentators bagging Melbourne for "over-celebrating". Remember that crap in past years? Win a tight one and apparently we're supposed to shake hands, offer a 'well played old man', and shuffle off to the showers.

Hudson was sneakily having a shot and completely off target. He's in the frame now.

7x 50m Kick ins is 350m gained before you get involved in general play....stat might be a bit weighted.

We are easy targets.  If you hate on the Dees, most of the time you are right, and it fits the narrative.  Huddo is a pin headed dweeb who wants to be the next Bruce.  Rankine case in point.  Jono Brown missed the eye poke (that was late) so his initial response was not unreasonable.

Start winning consistently and winning well and these worms will turn

My issue is that for 10 years we have had the same simplistic repetitive kick out strategy. Surely someone can come up with some different options to move the ball out of full back.

Even if he did touch him it was such light contact.

The umpires had as huge a hard on for Rankine as the commentators.  That free kick he got for too high around the 50m line in the 3rd quarter after the down field free was total rubish as well, should have been paid holding the ball, because the original tackle was barely high, he took the man on the mark on and then ducked it - it reeked of arrogance and the umpires fed it.  I can see Rankine becoming one of those players the umpires make untouchable.

His kicking was more than once country league reserves poor last night.   Yep, composure is not a word one associates with the young man.

Morning,  for a deelightful change, Its easier to pick the poor players from our side this week rather than the best,

Even so I thought some of the maligned players recently had good games,

Jack V and  C Oliver were great, Max and  Tracca as well and AVB just got better as the game progressed, followed on from improvement the previous week.    Fritz, Salem, May , Lever , Harmes,  Kossy and Harley, just about the whole side played a part,  In these depressing times   feel much better about meeting the Poos and Wees next week,   Go Dees

Is it lucky that Gawn has a good marking day when he’s the best mark in the comp and knows he has his opponent covered?

Last week we ran a couple of set plays of Gawn coming back to the middle. We win the ball but turned it over and got killed.

Against Carlton May tried to lace out a heap of kicks with various levels of success. 

The Giants ground is thin and the Suns had a tight zone. There were a couple of chances to go the fat side and then run in to space, but the forward line and mids have to do a heap of work and hit targets.

We had a strategy that was working and playing to our strengths with Gawn and contested footy. Isn’t that what people want from that coaches?
