TEAMS: Rd 06 vs Gold Coast

Jetta and Oscar completely change our defensive set-up, releasing May and Lever to be much more counter-attacking and in particular it should benefit Lever who can now be the smart interceptor and third-man up he is best at, without crapping his shorts all day about what hole is opening up behind him.

In Jetta's case, I think his presence as a proper responsible adult will help things enormously.

Weideman in will help T Mac operate with at least a little less than a 100% blanket on him, and doubles the chance of a tall person being under the fall of the ball from one of our random kicks forward.

Bennell in is just an obvious one, even before what apparently was a very busy and effective scratch match effort.

As far as I can see it, all four changes improve out structure and the outs, while being a little tough on a couple, are not diminishing our structure at all.

I approve of these decisions, now I wait...

Playing both Bennell & AVB is a little risky imo, considering they are managing their games time.

AVB has only averaged around 65%, and in only game Bennell has played it was 50%.

That was one of the big positives for Tomlinson - once he's out on the park he hardly comes off.

Bit harsh on AVB guys.  Deserves a few games to find some touch after what he has endured. Adds some much needed physicality when on song. He will have more than a few oppo players looking over their shoulder.

But why does he get a few games to find touch and others don't? Just because he's a good bloke?

A little better but Rivers should not have been dropped. AVB should have.

He had about 7 turnovers so may be appropriate for him to go back and work on disposal. He will be back, I think he has the goods.

They obviously have a lot of faith in Vanders. Has done zero to warrant keeping his spot. Needs to reward the faith.

Decent changes but I would’ve liked to see Jones and Brown as well. Brown has smarts forward of centre and Jones can kick - two things we badly lack.

Thank god they are finally playing Weid. He’s far from the saviour but we need to see if he’s up to it or not. He’s had long enough in the system. Time to find out for better or worse. If it’s worse we accept it’s another MFC draft blunder and move on. His inclusion also provides a bit more flexibility to play T Mac further up the ground which, if they insist on playing him, is where he should be utilised.

No. Because of the type of player that he is. A fit and firing AVB is a weapon and we don’t have many.

Sorry mate, but that's rubbish. Our culture will go to trash again if some players are afforded more opportunities than others despite the same form on game day. Once coaches start playing favourites it's all over.

Tomlinson hey ...

“We’re very excited to add Adam to our list as a free agent – he fills a very important need for our team,” General Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney told Melbourne Media.

“He’s played a number of different roles for the Giants, but predominantly what we’re looking for is someone who can run up and down the MCG on the wing.

“Adam is an elite runner and at 194cm, he has the versatility to provide us with a number of options, either forward or back.

“With 140 games experience, including the last four finals series, Adam complements the age and games profile of our list and we think he can have an immediate impact.”

Tomlinson is a durable player who has missed just two matches in the past three years, and has experience performing at the pointy end of the season.

What's he on a year again for the 4 year contract? Would've been better to throw that money on the pile that we surely had to have initiatially offered Brad Hill.

What exactly is your point? We got him based on a need for a winger with a tank, but he should be expected to perform to a higher standard and has been pretty damn average so far.

You clearly have little onfield football knowledge if you don’t understand the value of impact players.  Further, a committee selects the team of which the coach has a single vote. “Coach’s favourites”?  What did he do to become a favourite? Give the coach his four ‘n twenty on pie night? It’s not Lang Lang 2’s.

I haven't seen the movie either (too scary for me), but he is swinging an axe and leaving no impression on the door. The changes are ineffectual? Is that the message?

A question.

Do you think impact players should have an impact?

If yes perhaps you can get a message to VDB and let him know.

Anyone that thinks Tomlinson is stiff, just rewatch last weeks game. One poor game can be excused for sure but not putting your body on the line for the team, you are cut.

No Idea ... Hill asking price was crazy & we spend it on 2 defenders.. him & Langdon were brought in for outside run yet our our game plan  is not doing them justice ...

Exactly he’s not.... that’s my point & our drafting is very questionable & we seem to always get it wrong!

According to the age:

"The unrestricted free agent has been signed by the Demons on a five-year deal worth $500,000 a year."

Ah I see! With you now, yeah I wasn't jumping for joy with us getting Tomlinson. I thought he was a step up to improve our depth but I also didn't necessarily see him as a walk but best 22 player. I think he's an ok get, but not much more than that.

One thing i really like with the selections is that Harley is the best kick in the team and i reckon Omac is the next best (Salem has gone backwards in my view - a player who can't reliably hit a target 50 metre away and can't kick low and flat is not great a kick in my view). And jetts is a reliable kick as is Weed (except when he is having set shot for a match winning goal).

Smith, tomlinson and Smith all below average so the players in address the skill issue a fair bit

Like your work usually binman but you lost Me at O Mac being our 2nd best kick in the team

he is solid reliable kick but better than Petracca you reckon?

Chaplin said that tonight. No knocks at all on his running, but they need him to be better at the contest.

And leaving aside Hill @Hogan2014, we could've outbid the Dogs and got Josh Bruce with that spare change. And thrown a cheap contract at Newnes and had him Baker, Salem or ANB compete for that wing spot for a year. Can't be any worse than Tomlinson

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
