Ok, happy to be enlightened...go ahead

Sure, Jack helps out with the young kids at the club, goes through their games each week, he has done this on his own, even before he was Captain of our club. Josh said he wasn't even ask to do it, he just wanted to help them.

This was on SEN and it was our very own Josh . Mahoney (sorry not sure of the spelling of Josh last name)

So to say he brings nothing to our club is wrong.

One thing is for sure I would hate to play against JV.

I really do think we are tossing up between keeping him or Brayshaw.

I think the fact that Brayshaw was sent back home for his op, and his not out of contract, looking more likely Jack will be the one going.

Just on AFL web site said Jack is trying to make up his mind, and it's not a lock in that he will be at the Dee's next year.

I didn’t say he brings nothing to the club. That is not what I said at all. I questioned whether he is a genuine leader. Your example is pleasing to hear, but I reckon he should be going over his own tapes before instructing others. He has plenty of deficiencies he needs to be working on. Leave tht stuff to the coaches.

him and Gawn were apparently the two standouts from a leadership perspective.  He has the respect of his teammates.  Trains and plays like a maniac. you wouldn't see him laughing or groping during a 3/4 time address from the coach. he sets the tone often early in games with toughness and mental application and in the two finals we won, he was terrific. If he was to leave which I don't think he will, it would be because he is disillusioned with the lack of professionalism of his teammates to turn up each session/each game with the right attitude

I’ve heard that Jack isn’t a great communicator. In fact, the word used to describe him was ‘prickly’. Perhaps this is where he failed as captain. I’m not sure he is vocal with his players. Jones has similar issues

I don't think that would be the case as we need both of them playing well if we are to push for a top 8 spot next year.

As all of our players do, and this is where the coaches need a kick up the butt.

But hay by the sound of it from the AFL web-site his going to geelong ($*&#( great.

is this based on anything you've heard or just gut feel?

I don't think we bat deep enough through the midfield to getting rid of one of our best players.  usually you would think one of our inside mids would be injured at any given time, so we need back up.

Well you asked to list what ways he is a good leader and I gave them.  any response to my points?

I reckon he could be viewed as prickly and thats ok - he sets extremely high standards for himself and everyone else. if someone didnt meet them or was messing around, I think he would crack it.  I see him similar to a Buckley type personality, 'why doesnt everyone care as much as I do'?

he does have improvement with leadership to go though. he needs to be able to relate to kids to be able to influence them and I am also not sure how vocal he is on and off field.

Just listened to the AFL site. Sure Viney has a decision to make but a long way off going to Cats. No need for us to panic just yet.

Sounds to me like Brad Crouch will end up the Cats.

As for Jack Viney I will be surprised and disappointed if he left.

Of greater interest is what will happen with Tom Sparrow? Will we trade him to Adelaide? Or do we wish to keep him?

We can't afford to lose good players and both Viney and Brayshaw are good players. Don't like giving Geelong a free hit. Hope we retain both and  pinch one of Geelong's better players.

At the end of 2018 the club felt it had plenty of good strong marking forwards and let Hogan go, in 2019 and 2020 form drop offs/injury/players not coming on as expected mean we currently have a Demonland thread devoted to needing a gun forward.

Now at the end of 2020 we're seriously considering trading/surrendering a quality inside mid 'cause we have plenty of inside mids.  I can't help but wonder if Viney goes we'll be discussing which big-bodied mid we need to chase at the end of 2021.

There's some assumptions that losing Viney will make Brayshaw a more consistent performer and that Harmes's problems are all about being played out of position - neither of which I'm particularly sold on.  Also, we had a great run with injury this year and, if this came to an end with a few key mids being out I'm not sure Sparrow or others can step up.

Unless the club were to turn this into a deal to sort out a major gap in our team like they did with May, I'm hoping we hang onto Viney.

Purely gut feel.

Agree we don't bat deep enough in the midfield, however we have too many one dimensional mids..

I'd argue the Jack, Angus & Clarry are the only players who have no ability to play anywhere else on the ground other than on the inside.

Clarry is out best mid, so he can occupy the inside for most of the game.

However I don't think we can carry a team with two other players who cannot play anywhere else but on the inside.

If we traded out a Jack or Angus so that we can acquire an outside mid with sublime skills I'd be all for it.

It's a tough one, on talent you would take Angus over Jack. However Jack would be the player id least like to line up against.

Heard today that Essendope have some interest in Jack Viney now as well.

if he went there i feel we could match the offer and ask for Saad in return.

It does seem like the longer this drags on the more teams are starting to think maybe he is gettable.

it's difficult to tell if he is considering leaving or if we're just pretty happy for him to do so.

No, but given that he just won the Barrassi leadership award, I retract my statement haha. That said, didn’t express himself well and didn’t thank his teammates. Interesting

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
