Fair call.

While we need depth you're also asking an 18 yo whos had 0 pre seasons to hold down a position and or stop an opponent.

It's a tough call because we need depth but have depth where we dont need it.

Whats even worse is there is no versatility in the players we have.

For example you cant throw Viney or Brayshaw in a forward pocket... we just dont have the quality in depth.

Would love some more run and ground ball winners.

Paging @Pollyanna. Reckon you could throw Viney in a forward pocket. Agree on Gus though. Needs to keep playing midfield.

Haha just conversation not jumping on that one.

I'll put my house on it that the really good teams players played out of position. And they did it well. And guess what that's why they were a good team.

Well, probably Sparrow and play Rivers off half back. He can even have some of Sparrow's midfield minutes.

Reading this at work.  My brain doesn't handle such sensibility this early in the morning.

Stop it AF...just stop it.  Why would you want to play a player in his strongest position on the ground where he's performed admirably on many occasions over his career so far?  And have him kick the odd goal while he's at it!

Beggars belief. Pfft i dunno....some of you D'landers!  I mean seriously, you want to actually start winning matches on a regular basis huh?  Don't know what's up with everyone here lately.  Bloody Covid chaos.  That's the only feasible explanation.

Harmes is a tagger, Nothing more. The HBF is one of Goodys fascinating little tricks that does not work. I will leave it at that.

HBF job is to stop the opposition player getting the ball.

Who did Hamres play on against the dogs and did he get the ball.

I don't understand smaahing Goodwin over this.

Is Harmes in the best 22 players on our list? Probably.

Is Harmes in the starting 3 mids? No, he isn't even the first rotation in.

Is Harmes the best half forward option? Probably not. Fritsch is ahead of him, Brayshaw and Truck are resting there, Jones, Hannan and VDB are playing there, but can't play anywhere else.

Can Harmes play wing? No.

As the 5th best midfielder and 3rd best (and more versatile) HFF, but still in the 22, he finds himself at HBF because he is capable of playing there, in a way that others who he is competing with can't.

So Goodwin is "stubbornly persisting" because he is trying to play the best players. The only real option is to drop Harmes for a specialist like Rivers, but then he would be leaving talent in the shed.

It's pretty clear what he's trying to do and why. It isn't working so he needs to reassess: but when you can't play talent into form in the reserves, persisting may be the best option.

Its no coincidence that we got our run on back in the back half of 2018 due to the tagging efforts of Harmes. Not only was he shutting down some of the best names in the league, he was going out and getting the pill himself.

So why cant he do this hat half back when its a similar role? Shut your opponent down, get the pill yourself and generate some run.

Rusty rides again. I love it.

Harmes is the type who loves the contest. Give him some raw meat and unleash him. But importantly give him the prey. This week it is Steele or Billings. It’s that type of assignment needed for Harmes4 right now.

No room in the midfield for Harmes, tagger or not.  Unless you want to move Petracca forward to make room. No thanks.

Harmes should be out of the side,  we have way better half back options starting with Trent Rivers.

I still can't get my head around not making a change and getting Harmes onto Bont, he was gashing us. Would it have definitely worked? Who knows, I'd just prefer to see a coach try some things rather than stand there next to his director of coaching looking like idiots.

It's not forever PJ and it's not every match but when needed, of course he should.  Not Tracc, who should be pushing forward for short stints anyway.  Viney's your man playing more time forward for Harmes.

I've been wasted for more than 30 seasons.

Im starting now only to save time for the weekend.

Surely the lack of pressure up forward against the bulldogs points to an opportunity for Harmes to prove himself up there.  Has the fitness to keep chasing, knows how to tag and tackle, tall enough to cause trouble for any given opponent, and has shown he can counterattack and kick a goal.

He's nowhere near his most effective where he is at the moment and our small forwards truly shamed themselves on the weekend.

So by extension you are criticising the pro, Goody. Dlanders are just amatuers.

He might be on pro $$ but he's far from a pro coach yet imo HFF.

Saturday will be the turning point imv as he has no excuses with injuries to save his bacon this season and we are very unlikely to make the eight if we lose that one.  It's a must win.  When he has us playing finals on a regular basis (ie., say this season and next) then we can call him a pro.  At this point he's a fair way off it imv and still learning the ropes as he goes (hopefully).

And as for that last bit, by extension you are calling yourself out also.  Welcome aboard mate!

In my opinion and based on his form, fumbles and disposals in recent games I would give him a rest from the team completely. give him time to re-set in mind and body. Once he is back to form playing in scratch matches and training give him a role as a run with player.

Not justifying his place in the team at the moment.

Yeah, all good. This week is such a big game for us. The Saints will think they know how to beat us. Pressure and speed.

There's a whole week to prepare for this one and we have an extra day's rest HF.  They are also coming off a much bigger challenge than us imv playing a top of the table team in the Lions.  We are presented with a rare opportunity, in the current format.

In addition the blue print for smashing them was set by Scott a few weeks ago.

While we are certainly not the Cats, i'd be getting hold of as much analysis of the Cats demolition of the Saints as possible.   Along with help from Richo (surely some inside player value he can add here), the game day analyst (do we have one anymore?) and line coaches etc, i'd be dissecting that from front to back and every which way.  Obviously allowing for our own strengths / tweaks given each player's strengths/weaknesses and points of difference.

Opportunity knocks!

Sure, opportunity is something this group need to grasp front on. I do not follow other games closely anymore so take on board your ideas. I would add that if I was coaching I would tell the players not to leave anything at all in the tank this week and leave it to the coaches and the fitness guys to worry about the following weeks. Oddly I estimate over the past 56 years I have predicted us to win 70 per cent of our games. However in the past 2 years it would be down to 30-40 per cent.

Harmes has already proven himself in the midfield. He is a B grade midfielder and a very capable mid - good skills, balance, tenacity, he pretty much has it all as a midfielder (underrated). I think its the fact he has good attributes, that he is able to be tried elsewhere,  as opposed to Viney and Brayshaw, who can only be played in the middle. He isn't dissimilar to Hamish Hartlett at Port, who could play midfield, but due to Port's full time mids, he gets played off half back. Harmes is in a similar position now. So he will need to embrace his new position, and try and find a way to make it work, otherwise, he is trade bait. He may want to actually leave if he sees himself solely as a midfielder though.

No attempt to shift harmes into a different position before deciding to drop him. Bizarre decision. Playing him in the back line was never going to work

yeah a bit wierd, but his form has been below average. Goody stuck Brayshaw out on the wing at the start of last year when Gus was unaccountable in the midfield & he's managed to fight his way back into career best form......I'm sure Harmes will do the same. He just signed a four year contract didn't he??

The answer is simple Harmes into the guts as a tagger would have helped last week and Viney out.

Surely couldn’t consider tagging a match winner?

Where did you dream up such an innovative option?

Maybe a note to our coaching staff about this innovation would surprise them

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
