I've heard an idea being that the game is being pushed back till near the end of the season, if neither team is in running for finals and no other outbreaks etc then they just scrap the game altogether.

I think that they are holding back on our game as they are expecting others to also be postponed during the season. The AFL could then organise a bye/makeup round for all postponed games.

Unlikely I would have thought (unless there is absolutely no alternative) as it affects all sorts of things including betting markets on products such as the Brownlow Medal, trigger points in player contracts, etc.

It probably does depend on whether other games are postponed but it's an idea out there but an unlikely one

Not to mention draft order, match payments, sponsorship agreements and more.

can anyone explain how Essendon have a full side to choose from sans McKenna. He wasn't training remotely. I do not trust Essendon for a minute to report honestly.

Our game deserves AFL Rules that we could challenge the AFL over??

Completely agree. They've gotten out of this very lightly.

Evidently McKenna was his wrestling partner. All other players are deemed fine for some reason.

Glad we're not playing them this weekend now.

Would have liked the Club to be more vocal in demanding an early replacement game or requiring Essenscum to forfeit. As it stands we are being disadvantaged and will go into the Geelong game underdone. We are the losers here and need to be given some consideration.

Also this game was meant to be televised on FTA, which means both Channel 7 and Foxtel would need this game to be made up as part of the TV rights deal. No chance it won't go ahead. It needs to be rescheduled and I assume it will happen either during the quarantine period for the WA hub, or later on in the year when other games are postponed etc.

The only player that has been deemed "close contact" is Stewart, who was apparently his wrestling partner.

I guess snotting/spitting, wiping his nose and grappling with players during training doesn't count.

?

Why are so many people angry that we're not playing the game tomorrow?

Why do we need/want to play so soon?

I must admit I wanted toi play mid week, but now the Geelong game is so close it doesn't matter anymore and the further we are from anything to do with Essendon right now the better.

The issue is the return game vs Essendon and when it will be fixtured.

Who are the AFL going to blame when the next two Games that TWSNBN have to play, result in more positive cases?

The AFL Board of Management would need to go.....

I for one am quite glad that we dont have our players exposed to their (potentially) disease riddled backline.

Let Carlton be the guinea pigs.

Tuned in to 360 last night and Robbo was really flying the Essendon flag. Gerard was saying how all the clubs were warned before the restart about groups of 8 possibly being unavailable if someone tests positive, and the coaches need to group them accordingly. They were well warned. Then Robbo was saying nah it's unfair....

After a while my wife goes "Who's this guy on the right? He sounds drunk!" ?

Honestly I'm starting to think that's the best outcome out of all this. The end of Gil and his cronies is exactly what the AFL needs.

Agreed. Safer not to play them for 14 days

Assuming there are no more impacted games, why can't they do a split round later in the year to cater for the postponed game.

Melbourne and Essendon won't have to play on a 4 day break and all clubs can get a mid season break in replacement of that stupid bye before the finals which is one of the worst initiatives the AFL has brought to the game recently.

Don't even get me started on that pre-finals bye that completely kills the momentum of the season.

Possibly a worse decision than the 'sub' rule.

People sooking that we should've got the 4 points or get to play a half strength bombers side are missing the big picture here.

Every club will be put out at some stage this year.

Some clubs have already had to go in to hubs. Essendon and North did same day travel etc etc.

It easily could've been our boys getting the positive test. The club shouldn't be worrying about what they can't control and should turn up wherever and whenever and win games.

Well said that is the sign of a strong club with strong leaders / thank goodness some of the winers  on here don’t run our club

And that's pretty much the dichotomy on the forum right there

Empathic, nuanced considered opinions vs harden the [censored] up no matter the context.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
