Ricciuto on Lever

I was really keen for Lever. Was happy with the price at the time.

He injured his knee again which changes everything. Of course Adelaide are ok with it. 

No one would say that we have gotten value out of the trade as yet.

Agree.

I seem to recall many here on Demonland doing cartwheels at the time we first signed him.

How quickly some turn on these guys after a bit of misfortune injury and/or form wise.

Still pleanty of time for him to get back to his best.

On that basis you would want Gawn and Trac either right?

Having knees are not the career ending injury they once were.  Particularly since Lever had played a fair few trouble free seasons at the Crows, I think the club are/were taking a pretty fair bet on that basis.

As deanox said in the other Lever thread (do we really need multiple Lever threads), the points equivalent was Lever and 72 for pick 8.

So unlike dazzle says, it wasn't two first round picks, it was one.

And even if it was two, we went out to find an A-grade player and sometimes that costs a bit (picks and/or salary cap). Hindsight reasoning is so frustrating, and Demonland engages in it all the time when it comes to drafting/trading.

Ricciuto's comments are somewhat embarrassing for a football club director and they’ve already been disputed by the manager of two of the players he criticized in Charlie Cameron and Mitch McGovern. Colin Young pointed to the club’s infamous 2018 training camp, which was ‘cult-like’ and left several players distraught, as a key reason for the departures.

The problem is that the Crows haven’t been setting the world on fire on the field so Ricciuto would be better advised to keep his trap shut and not try to emulate Jeff Kennett who at least runs a club that’s tasted some success in recent years.

He should be doing his job as football director and concentrate on the task of getting his mob off the bottom of the ladder or thereabouts.

As opposed to having to grossly overpay a 3rd tall defender to pry him out of his Club.

Look, you were a well known supporter of the Lever trade and you are soon going to have to realise that he is just a good, ordinary 3rd tall defender that you Draft at around Pick 30 - 40 and you pay $400 - 450k pa tops.

I don't think it's an absurd or stupid comparison at all and you are missing the point I'm trying to make, which is that both Gawn and Trac have provided a number of years of good/great service since having knee reconstructions (several in Gawn's case), so it's not like a club should steer totally clear of any player that has had a knee reconstruction in the past.

To be honest, I wasn't a supporter of the Lever trade.  Having not really paid any particular attention to Lever at Adelaide, I was fairly neutral on it at the time.  There were plenty on this forum who were a huge rap for him though and suggested it was an absolute coupe that the MFC landed him.

2019 was a stinker all around and I think it is fair to state that both Lever and May haven't really provided value for money returns just yet, but I still think there is plenty of oppertunity for both these players to make really solid contributions to the team that could justify the coin we spent on them.

Either way MFC paid overs for both Lever & May, heavily invested in defenders & one questions we let Frost go who would not have cost anywhere near 800K & perhaps used it to lure a Forward after losing Hogan....But why would you want to do that when you building your side around Tom Mac a proven FF after 1 season  along with Weidermab who can't get a game!

We forget as usual the MFC strategy/game plan was halted when the  AFL changed the rules to 6,6,6 & Lever was a great intercept mark.

Huge respect for Ricciuto the player.  But wow what a muppet of a football administrator.  His public comments on these matters reek of sore looser in much the same was as Tex Walker's dummy spit after some of these players like Lever left.

Wouldn't take much for him to use a bit of diplomacy and just play a straight bat to some of these questions and assertions, along the lines of "We were comfortable and stand by the decisions we made regarding the particular circumstances of each player" and then just leave it at that.  A wise local footy coach I knew had a wise philosophy of not paying out on any players that left the club, because if they departed on good terms, they may often come back at some stage.  I think it works slightly differently in the AFL, but I can't see many players being attracted to a club with senior officials that carry on like that.

I read that poor old Ricciuto also had a bit of a public spat with Crows club legend Andrew McCleod who is also currently employed by the Crow over public critisisms that McLeod had made about cultural problems with the club.  All this airing if dirty laundry just doesn't really reflect well on the Crows as all - perhaps they have taken the new mantle as basket case cub of the AFL?

This is a great point. We traded for Lever when we were playing a purely zone defense. No one on one's. The 666 meant we needed to rethink that and we traded for May.

I don't know if this is allowed. Was my personal perception at the time with absolutely no evidence to back it up whatsoever. Lived in West Lakes, had Footy Park membership, went to almost every Crows' game in their first eight years. Roo was on the juice.

At his age nobody would pick up May's contract based on his output since becoming a demon. If they would we should trade him in a heartbeat. He is not a good lock down defender and and we have others who do what he does as well or better and cheaper. His mistakes are costly and he makes too many of them. The next time the Dee's are competitive in the finals May will not be in the team.

At this stage all Mark R is doing  is trying to justify his role and Adelaide's policy of not paying its players "overs" to keep them.

If that means losing them so be it and he thinks that's all there is to it.

However he refuses to reconcile that WHY are they leaving what many thought was a very strong and well run organisation in 2017 ( even after the Tippett affair) of overpayment and salary cap/ draft penalty /ies.

Of course since Losing the 2017 Final the following Has occurred  

(1) Hugely stressful and even racist happenings to players At a Camp Trying to gain a leading edge on other Clubs

(2) Very poor administration Trying to hide drink driving  charges  Of Steglein

(3) Another Camp error at Barossa breaking Covid-19 rules 

and (4) things like the Tex Dummy spits and Andrew Macleod unwelcome expressions.

Approximately a dozen players have either requested leave from the Club as a result of its pay program and Camp handling of refusing to acknowledge full blame.

in addition a highly confidential outside enquiry at end of 2019 resulted in officials like Brett Burton parting or being shown the door.

Three people have remained constants at the Crows ALL this time Chairman Rod Chapman, CEO Andrew Fagan and Football Director/Board Member Mark Ricuitto ( seemingly untouchable ).

Snd that a result of why Roo is trying to hide some real facts instead of joining His Chairman and taking his CEO in calling it a day at this seasons end.

And that's all we are aware of!!!

The Club is now at its lowest ebb in its 29 year history but does have 5 draft picks in the first 25 in the 2020 National Draft so a quick rebound could be possible if the right recruits are obtained to overcome a solid but not pacy midfield.

Roo has lashed  out unwisely in Trying to protect the Crows without the full story being told in my IMO.
