pewpewpew 742 Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 I thought I read that our ruck coach Greg Stafford was also our goal kicking coach. Greg kicked 141 Goals and 66 Behinds in 204 Games. Quote

It was announced at the Members Information Night. https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/307842/goal-kicking-coach-among-football-department-changes In an exciting move for the club, ruck coach Greg Stafford will be adding to his role, taking on the responsibility of improving the Demons’ accuracy in front of the sticks. General Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney said after a formal interview process, Stafford was the standout candidate for the added duties. “A key area we identified as we went through our coaching department was the role of a goalkicking coach,” he told Melbourne Media. “Whilst that responsibility has sat with several of our coaches in the past, we felt that it needed to have a specific person to own it and to run it. “After speaking to a number of different people in the off-season about what the best programs are, and interviewing a number of different people, we’ve welcomed Greg into that role.” Quote

Forward craft, leading and positioning should be tasked to someone with experience and runs on the board in that department. I'm surprised we don't have that covered when it is perhaps now one of our biggest deficiencies. 3 1 Quote

whatwhat say what 23,836 Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 the amount of defenders and ruckmen who are 'forward coaches' is...interesting Quote

All clubs had to move on assistants and then make decisions as to how they would use their resources. We did have an assigned forwards coach by the way. Blind_turn 43 Posted June 13, 2020 Author Posted June 13, 2020 Gidday rjay, I'm not potting the coaching structure, I'm just sharing a factual observation. If it was as simple as the number of coaches you had per line - why stop at one? Quality is the key and I agree that a big part of an effective inside fifty is just as much to do with the mid-fielders as the forwards. With the prospect a reduced coaching rosters (along with all other areas of the club) Melbourne like all other clubs will have to think very hard about how they apply their human capital in the years to come. Anyway, can't type now - the game is about to begin - Go Dees! Quote

I watched our round 1 game recently and interesting comments from Gerard Healey and Pav as we continually bombed the ball long to McGovern and Barass was the real problem was the mid field bombing long while the forwards were leading out leaving West Coast to mark unopposed! This went on all game, so the forward line strategy hasn’t been communicated to the mid? Or if the mids are under pressure don’t you alter the forward tactics and leave a tall in the goal square to compete? Today will be interesting to see if the disconnect has been rectified. Quote

By the disconnect you mean... As a midfielder if you have the ball, make sure you look at what is happening in the forwardline and if you see a player leading, kick the ball to the front of them also don't constantly go for 'metres gained' because the only other interpretation is the Weideman, and TMAC must absolutely annihilate all and sundry in training as it seems as though there is a view as a midfielder, 'I can kick it anywhere in the 50 - and they'll have it covered'. I liked that even when Neitz had his off days where he couldn't clunk a thing, he'd still halve every contest and hit a pack with ferocity. TMAC needs to in the least, be that imposing if he's not taking them. @GCDee a TMac mentor at least, get him down there a few days a month! Edited June 13, 2020 by John Demonic Quote
