Wonder how many ankle injuries we get from Marvel...

is there an overall plan for the season if things go well?   17 rounds then finals?

or is it just 4 weeks, then reassess?

A good organization would be assessing this entire year on a day to day basis.
The Spanish Flu had a 2nd and 3rd Wave that was more vicious than the 1st.
Once the Cities switch on again, we wait and see...

it was a long weekend in the UK and the US

the photos of the crowded beaches etc are amazing....

Wonder how long it will be before the Govt's lose the bulk of Australians. The fear message was simply too harsh in light of what happened.

Once you have community football going again in July(?) why would the AFL even bother with all the player isolation stuff.

Good question. Two possible answers:

1. Because shorter quarters were used in Round 1 and it keeps the game format the same for the whole season

2. Because at some time during the rest of the season there might be a need to schedule games with shorter turn-around times

My own view is that I don't believe (1) above is relevant but (2) might be, although the game could be played "full length" now and shortened should the need arise.

The above isn't possible answers they are the answers. The season needs to stay consistent from round to round.

There is already a couple 5 day turn arounds with travel in the next 4 weeks.

Possible that WA will also have a hub after 8 weeks which will put teams into isolation and miss a round of footy meaning they will have to make that game up midweek.

That will be AFL House Reasoning, i agree.
But Hollow. There is nothing in it

Red Time (Time on) is often when the game is at its most exciting.
These [censored] Clowns ? have no right to do this, This is another McGuire agenda. He has been banging on about this.
obviously still doesn’t sleep after the 2018 GF

Red time doesn't disappear with shorter quarters.

weren't some of the pics from the US in particular just horrifying! The Lake of the Ozarks and Venice beach blew my mind. I felt itchy and like I had a cough coming on just looking at them.

Yes it does. It occurs earlier

Same thing. The contest is shortened

Why? There is no need. Leave it alone

Reminds me of the argument used to try and justify keeping 8 ball overs in test cricket in Australia when England had 6 ball overs. The argument went that more wickets fell on the 7th or 8th ball of overs so therefore keeping 8 ball overs was justified. Argument was, as we now know, lost.

I think it was for this year alone,  when we might play twice in a week,  and with shortened lists.

That is the justification spin. I know all that. I want to know the real rationale of this

There is no need to shorten Quarters...

Not sure whether it was McLure or Healy last night that made the excellent point that he had never heard a fan calling for shorter quarters. It always came from football commentators who they thought were simply bored with the game. Eddie was given a special mention.

Frankly this year was one for normal length quarters plus shortened quarter and half time breaks. No need for food/toilet breaks for fans this year.

Except that even before the virus, the AFL had lost control of the direction of the game. When you have no ideas, any idea seems like a good one.

Exactly. These Cowboys have to go

Eddie should have been banished after the Adam Goodes imbroglio

For him to still be a Media Spokeman is disgraceful

Exactly.
What are the alteria motives

Hocking justifying his position?

The game is 100 minnues +- Time on

Real rationale = Big Bash

As Roy and HG said last weekend.

It's not sport it's entertainment!

I thought it was now 80 minutes + time on. It certainly used to be 25 minutes plus time on per quarter but I thought it was reduced to 20 minutes per quarter because time on is now more correctly applied resulting in longer games. I suspect this issue is actually a storm in a teacup with 16 minute quarters plus time on approximating the old total game time of approx 2 hours.

Channel 7 wants it is the answer

possibly. But for what reason? I have only heard McGuire lipping on about it

He is not a Ch 7 employee

The AFL have already killed the Reserves

Killed the VFA Comp and for me, Killed the  Match Day Experience (as they like to call it)

Now the game is being made shorter because a few Suits think its better??

They want games to fit in a 2hr tv segment

if you don't want to buy one of the better android boxes (around $200) there's lots of cheaper ones available online that you might like to consider.

For example Kogan has them for $85 and if you can wait for one from China even cheaper again.

You really need one of these to maximise your TV use these days as streaming is becoming more important by the day.

https://www.kogan.com/au/deals/android-smart-tv-box/?department=connected-home&category=media-players-set-top-boxes&order_by=Default&view=grid&price=%2C100

I have an Nvidia shield 2017 model.Took me a little while to get used to the remote but after a few days I loved it.

but don't forget kayo (still) doesn't support many streaming boxes and smart tvs. kayo need to lift their game

so do your homework before buying a streaming box

it'll be the norm going forward i reckon

They've clearly caved into Dangerfield who wants less games, shorter quarters and more money.

1 hour ago, Dr. Gonzo said:

Yes i am sure they do. But a 3 hour time segment can be just as lucrative

That is just lazy. I know how advertising schedules work.
if they employed better commentators, for a start, that would vibe up the hours instantly

People turn off because the Commentary is so bad. I do the same with the Cricket ? now. Unwatchable so often,  because of James Brayshaw style of Commentary where they pump themselves up bigger than the game!!

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
