AFLW: H&A Cancelled ... Straight to Finals

Sounds like our girls have been bent over by officialdom.

Read a report that said the AFL clarified after making an error and it is 4 teams per conference into finals.

It’s def top 4 teams from both conferences.

Past few years I’ve enjoyed the AFLW until we reach point that we cannot possibly contend and then get disgustingly furious and totally switch off from it. Had that feeling last weekend after loss in NT, but totally reversed now n am pumped again.

If we get Lauren Pearce back n we kick straight, can we go all the way? Bloody hope so

This was posted in October 19 by the AFL re the AFLW competition.

Ignore the game dates which obviously now change.

The top three sides in each conference will qualify for finals, with the teams who finished first in each pool given a bye in the first week of finals.

FINALS STRUCTURE

Week one, April 4-5
Semi-final one: A2 v B3
Semi-final two: B2 v A3
Byes: A1, B1

Week two, April 11-12
Preliminary final one: A1 v winner of B2/A3
Preliminary final two: B1 v winner of A2/B3

Grand Final, April 18
Winners of preliminary finals

Well looks like top 4 teams in each group now, so another change.

Andy Maher just made the exact same error, mentioned how upsetting it’d be for Dees fans. Gave me fright of my life. Not because we’d missed out, but because I’d be proved wrong on DL

It appeared it would be a two-week finals series but the AFL quickly admitted to an error.

The league confirmed an eight-team finals series will take place with the top four teams from each conference.“

Are you guys sure it is the top 4 teams from each conference. I have a feeling Maher may have been right.

8- team final series. https://womens.afl/news/49363/aflw-finals-structure-revealed-after-season-cut-short

Thanks to the AFL for its stellar communication during this time /end sarcasm

In all seriousness, I doubt there'll be a Grand Final. Things could look different quickly.

Let's all enjoy the possibly brief moment where the Dees are still in the hunt.

(Also, can we even field a team? With Lampard down and Goldrick maybe out, we're still around 1 fit player.)

And just to add, there are many players across the league who will now have played their last game without knowing it, due to age, injuries, the competition passing them by or the need to return to careers. An all too brief footy career for some but I'm sure greatly cherished. Nothing major in the scheme of the world but I think worth noting.

Goldy is right to go apparently, need her run off of HB. Lampard big out though. If Downie and/or L Pearce come back in though for Lampard (and possibly someone else? Who?) then we could reshuffle n maybe do some damage in finals

That's a great result really - I'd certainly rather have GWS than Brisbane, and presumably we'd get North the following week if we win.

Good luck ladies. It doesn’t really matter how we got there now, same for the Suns playing in their first ever finals series as club.

Yes good luck Suns. A small milestone but a milestone nonetheless. Get around them GC.

The cynic in me thinks that including the top 4 in each Conference (rather than the original finals structure of top 3) is to ensure Collingwood get into the finals!

While they are on four wins like other teams in the top 3 of each Conference many AFLW teams have missed finals because of %'age.

The AFL would have the finals over in two weeks if they stuck to the original finals structure.

With the women's team having evidently contracted the Norm Smith Curse, I was fully expecting the original six-team finals system would be cut back to four - right on cue after we'd just given up second spot. So the eight-team announcement came as a surprise. Then it became clear as day: we will lose to one of the fourth-placed teams in the grand final. MFCFFS

Oh bugger! I was wondering if they had headed back or not. Can’t blame them but just no luck for the Dees W side!

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
