Funny roos made him a defender, but Buckley got the credit for turning him  into defender from the media, as if he never played there before

    I didn't say Roos traded watts, at all. I think I would have said that watts eventually lost Roos respect, but got a reprieve and a new contract, on the back of a couple of better games late in his contract year.  Roos's last year as coach.

    The next year watts came back to the club in poor condition, and was straight away in the sin bin.  As he should have been, and finally traded out of this club.

    Watts behaviours was a reflection of the old culture that haunted this club Prior to Roosy's efforts,  and Goody is also cleaning things up.  see Hogan.

     

    That old cushy soft culture pervaded thru Danihers era, coming from around Balmes time.  

    Hence why no Silverware in those periods.

    And Pre Barassi as well.

    Barass an Jordan helped to clear most of it out,  but some players were to good to eject.

    Northey wouldn't stand any slackers.   But the Big heads did creep back in again,  and then its not long before the place is party-central, 'again'.

    One of the best aeralists the games ever seen, reads the play exceptionally well & a very good kick. Collingwood have shown more faith in him than we did......

    So I was talking to a bloke who said he catered an AFL player’s engagement party at the player’s house. Said the player had a whole lot of posters for “Mark of the year” printed up at the house that couldn’t be used.

    This bloke was being a bit cryptic about the identity of the player and I just said “That would be Jeremy Howe” and the bloke was shocked I’d worked it out.

    Not too hard to work through “Who probably should have won mark of the year, but comes across as dense enough to count their chickens before they hatch?”.

    I tend to pay more attention to former Melbourne players of course when watching games, and I think his kicking is better at Collingwood.

    I keep expecting him to stuff up but he doesn’t that often, kicks flat and fast and usually hits a teammate.

    I don’t know if it’s genuine skill or decision making improvement, or because he’s in the backline and all the best efficiency kickers are in the backline because so many of their kicks are sideways or backwards kicks to switch play to loose players.

    He is a selfish player. Always was at MFC.............  and at the Colliewobbles team of misfits.

    I have some sympathy for him because as I understand it his manager talked him out of Melbourne by talking up his price to absurd heights on the back of one query from either GC (most likely) or GWS. The chatter ran all through his last year with us so that it passed the point of no return and he had to leave, and yes, he was sold a bill of goods by Buckley with the promise of going forward which lasted about three games. And he was paid about the same as he was at Melbourne. The big dollars promised earlier never materialised.

    Had he been smarter he could have been a one club player so long as we were prepared to tolerate his miskicks which were a weekly occurrence, just as they were with TMac in his time in defence. I had a chat with JH in the pre-season after he left us and told him we'd give him a good welcome. He knew exactly when that was - round four - better than I did, and seemed nervous about it. 

    Now, with five years exposure to the self talk and bull of Eddie and Co he is showing the signs of all true Collingwood believers. Poor bugger. He displays no gratitude for Melbourne's role in plucking him from the obscurity of Dodge's Ferry. Let's hope we smash them for as long as JH remains there just as we did in round 4, 2016 and pull a flag as he totters into retirement.

    and, iirc, he'd already been dropped to the vfl by then cos his form forward of the ball was appalling

    he was always a natural defender, but he's not an all-australian calibre player; well, at least not yet

    Lets face it, Jeremy and his cousin are not among the worlds great thinkers. 

    In fact I would put them on the bottom of the wisdom stakes.

    But hell, Jeremy takes a great mark and Matthew has a big mouth.

    Jeremy plays on a tightrope every time he pulls the boots on...pretty dangerous actually. The super skill is not getting up there, but managing safely to navigate a sure path down. The danger is losing your equilibrium in that descent.

      Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

    • REPORT: St. Kilda

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
