Australian Stock Market down 5.5 % so far today

Herd mentality at work

The bubble just needed an excuse to burst. Trade wars, bushfires, bloated stock market, easy debt and Trump were bound to blow up the economy sooner or later. The virus is just the tipping point.

Not according to Joshy Friedenbrain this morning. All was pumping along strong before this.

Should we be concerned that Salem didn’t play on Friday due to illness? (I’m joking)

The mass hysteria is truly worrying. You now can’t get toilet paper, tissue, sanitary products are hard to come by and diapers. I have a friend who’s 4 year old kid is currently dying from cancer and he couldn’t get diapers!
People have so much worse things going on in their lives, yet we are seeing people punch on for a pack of Kleenex.

I’m still not sure what has caused the toilet paper, tissues etc stampede. I heard from one checkout person that it’s people buying and then sending overseas to the worst hit areas that are in lockdown (Wuhan etc), but I somehow doubt that, as the parcels would not make it out of the country, and if they did, they certainly wouldn’t make it beyond customs at the other end of their journey.

If, as I suspect, it is in preparation for going “off the grid” in a lock down situation, then there are going to be a hell of a lot of stinking households, as no one seems to be stocking up on other basic hygiene products such as soap, shampoo etc. Also, people are in a tizz over hand sanitiser, yet no one seems to be interested in anti-bacterial hand soaps that also claim to kill 99.9% of germs... go figure.

I just returned from Taiwan where everyone is very coronavirus aware and taking all precautionary measures. They all wear masks (particularly in enclosed spaces and on public transport), most restaurants and shops, cinemas etc have hand sanitiser for you as you enter and many check your temperature; and there is no shortage of any products in supermarkets!

Some may dismiss their behavior as overreaction, but if you look at the fact that they have a similar population to ours, but in a far more condensed area (not to mention the fact that the epicenter of the virus is just a hop skip and a jump away), yet they currently have 45 cases to our 93, I think I’d be inclined to think they are doing something right.

And lastly, I hope that your friend can find the support and supplies that they obviously need; sending positive thoughts!

GWS football department in lockdown amid coronavirus concerns: Edmund

“GWS at the moment have locked down their football department. As of yesterday, no visitor can enter the GWS football department."

You know if any club has to pull the pin on the season due to a widespread corona virus outbreak it’ll be Melbourne #mfcss

In reality, I suspect a very small percentage of the population falls into this category. I think the mindset of the vast majority is more along the lines of "I'd better buy dunny paper before the doomsdayers empty the shelves" - it's self-perpetuating.

Everyone on here shakes their heads at the doomsday preppers, but I bet many of us have recently purchased something we didn't immediately need, out of concern that it might not be available next supermarket trip.

Yes, I might by an extra bottle of provista sugo because stocks appear to be running low, but toilet paper rolls by the hundreds??

more likely that Fox etc will just be rubbing their hands with glee. (Does glee kill viruses?)

I had the Boss go down and get the house stocked up a few weeks back just in case an Italy type situation arises and goods are locked down as are people.....amazing the things you'll value if it happens here for two weeks!

There is a chemist in Ballarat selling single rolls of toilet paper for 3.99. Still no toilet paper or hand sanitizer on the shelves for about a week now.

Watching the soccer from Italy on the weekend with no crowds was pretty amazing. You could hear the players yelling and talking to each other, like a suburban footy match. The home ground advantage definitely took a hammering.

Surely the only people entering the GWS training facility would be lost and asking for directions?

I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one.

If the games go ahead without  spectators , it kind of makes the saying  “the game of AFL is nothing without the fans” a little redundant.

I know a win’s a win but geez the enjoyment and satisfaction of winning a game at the G in front of nobody would be seriously diluted.

Expect round 1 to be played behind closed doors!

Government to ban large gatherings in the coming days.

Corona is out there so its about limiting/slowing as its can not be contained any longer!

Rounds 2 and 3 should be be played in front of crowds that make up no more than 30% of the ground’s capacity to prevent close contact.

If West Coast and GWS go into quarantine we get the 8 points right? Its not our fault they dont turn up surely afl !

On a more serious note, Italy has just gone into lockdown across the entire country from today (tonight). Masked armed soldiers and police checking tickets on trains and you must confirm your residence. You can only allowed to travel for work purposes or you face jail or fines. All bars and restaurants closed at dusk.

If they can close restaurants in Italy, anything is possible.

I would find it hollow and unforfilling if the Dees won the flag after a season of no crowds and a Granny in an empty stadium.

4 points is not the main reason why I follow the Dees.

wouldn't worry me one iota, moonie. you're a dinosaur.......a flag is a flag

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
