Replacing Frost

Oscar

Frost?  The over concussed defender who was bog average for the hawks last week?

surplus to needs.  We got May, Petty, Oscar, Smith and Hore as clear choices for taller defenders.  Lockhart as distributor looks far better than Frost.

i think this is the wrong way to look at it.

Forgot the Hore

Lever and May are our two key defenders. case closed.

Petty when fit is an option, but still some work to do.

Lockhart’s calmness in the backline on the weekend was a bit of a revelation too. Might be a good lock down option when teams have multiple small forwards or backup for Nev.

Frostball was fun, but too many turnovers if we want to be serious.

You mean, who's going to grab the ball, run flat out for 50m, kick at full tilt to no one in particular and then watch it sail over his head for a goal? Or whose going to chase down an opponent then kick it out on the full? Or whose going to break team zoning rules, only to be told off by senior players?

Tough call, but I'd rather a disciplined Oscar than Frosty.

This inanimate carbon rod.

What a strange thread.

I'll say Stuie dew.

Dew comes after frost doesn't it.

But seriously, frost is irreplaceable.

No one kicks as badly as he does.

Clearly its Oscar

Someone start a poll

Petty.

I’m not sold on the idea, but it’s clearly going to be OMac there for at least the first part of the season. If Petty gets fit he may challenge for the role.

Sounds like this is actually designed as yet another bag Oscar thread.
Getting boring.

Lever/Smith.  Lever I think will play the Frost mobile role.

Omc/Petty/ will take some of the bigger talls, imo.  Petty I think, will end up a swinging gorilla. ?

Not at all,  it's about what our options are.   To me it seems quite concerning that we really don't have a second defender who is good enough.

My theory has always been that you can't win a premiership without a quality defence.  Do we have a premiership defence?

Mate, Frosty was not "premiership quality defence" and not our "second defender".

Move on.

Yes Frost was not premiership quality.  He was our second defender.

That's funny one_dee, I'd have Jetta, Hibberd, May, Lever and even Oscar in front of him... and happily replace him with another gray hound on crack in Hunt, for the "line breaking speed top turn over" thrill ride, if that what gets you going at the footy.

No,  not yet.

We have a team that'll launch us into more regular finals.  And we have the youngsters to form a nucleus to take the next step up from finals as they mature.  Of these I'm expecting the Petty, Salem, Lockhart, Lever, Omc, Harmes (defenders),  Pickett, Langdon, Viney, Tracca, Baker, Fritta, Oliver, Weideman, Spargo, Bedford, Sparrow, Rivers, Jackson.

Yes.  I guess we have to hope that we got the recruiting right or if we play finals regularly we might be able to attract a quality defender in the future.   In the meantime we'll have to endure a dysfunctional defence.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
