A pertinent question I think is: Does Viney deserve to be VC?

If he’s that far back in the votes amongst his peers, then he shouldn’t just be a walk up start for VC.

I honestly think it’s great that the administration has given the power to the players to decide, and if Viney isn’t no.2 then he shouldn’t be VC.

Nobody has said it's up to the players to decide except the Media. The player vote is a FACTOR in the process and it has been like this at least back to Paul Roos starting.

Are you saying Viney had a good 2019 season?  Because he didnt

Third in the B&F is, by definition, a good season. Happy to defer to the coaches/match committee in their assessment of players' performance.

I wouldn’t say he had a great year, but by the very fact he finished 3rd in our B&F you can’t say he had a bad year. He would probably be the first to say he didn’t meet his standards, but to totally dismiss his placing in the B&F suggests that you aren’t seeing things that the coach and match committee rate highly.

Antinomy is an aberration. I assume you mean antithesis.

I thought it was an element.

I think the opposite. I'm not convinced players can be objective enough in their assessments or necessarily understand the totality of the job.

Third in B&F in a side finishing 17th is very average in my view! Led poorly last year. Jones saw writing on the wall and acted appropriately.

antimony not= antinomy

At this stage it is still a fact that the horse has not spoken.

Will be announced today at a press conference at 12.40. If anyone is wondering.

Why would they think poorly of him if the only reason is because he was a poor captain??

What I meant was players can get p-ssed off easily these days and with Jack becoming a RFA at season's end, we don't need him thinking he is not popular with is team mates and using that as an excuse to look elsewhere.

I don't see the problem with Gawn and Jack as Co Captains for this year and if not, hope he is VC.

Feeling slighted can affect performance also.

That is just my view.

OK

Typical Melbourne.

Viney too tough and hard to be capt of the club.

Never seen Viney shirk a contest; from Wojo to Stack.  Same can’t be said for Gawn round 1 2019.

Is this about a popularity contest within the club?  Is this about Viney setting the bar too high and being too honest?  Is this about the club trying to wipe the slate clean in relation to 2019?  Is this more about PR and media?  Is this our answer to the Grundy 7 year deal?

Throughout his captaincy, Viney always thought we were much better than we actually were.  Always took confidence from the wrong things.  Gawn's message was spot on all last yeah, even when we won.  We sucked and had a lot of work to do.  This is a great call by the club.

It was his idea to introduce it. It was his preferred model. However, with the inclusion of a few new assistants, he has recognised that an individual 'sole' captain may be a better model. Stand by for announcement.

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didn’t just beat Gold Coast — they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #28 Will Verrall

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #30 Harry Sharp

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lions’ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

Worked his way back after a slow start and a further slump in form going into the midseason but became a solid contributor for the club in the latter half of 2025. Closing in on 300 goals for the club.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
