Training Ground?

Rumoured that the Lions will re-locate home games to Springfield while they rebuild the Gabba for the Olympic Games.

Will be interesting to see how that works. Not sure if it will be one season or two and then of course in the Olympics year I doubt we will see games at the Gabba post June so they can lay the running track

Hi DJ. The ground is an hour by road from the centre of the city and judging by last years AFLW Grand Final holds around 8,000. It would be like us relocating to Casey if they decided to redevelop the G.

Was on the ABC this morning. My point is that they may upgrade it free of charge to the Lions to say 20k capacity.

The only other option is the Gold Coast

Rumour up here is between 4-6 years the Gabba will be out of action for the lions, 3 years to build, it needs to be set up for two years prior to the Olympics as part of their testing and commissioning requirements.  Lions and Cricket QLD/AUS are blowing a gasket over it, potentially they’ll just do a renovation and upgrade one stand to add seating.

This thread never ceases to suck me in. I see new comments and think there maybe news. Today's it's about  the Lions and the Gabba. Is there no end to the torture?

AFLW match today is at the Eagle's training facility (I think). Looks great

They're strangely secretive about the inside of their facility but it is brilliant. It's sparse, perfectly located and has two almost AFL level fields.

Cash rules! And the fact there's so many land around Perth to develop.

One oval (main)is dimensions of Optus while the outside oval  is MCG dimensions.

Back in the day the outside oval was the main car park

Amazing facilities, must have poor conditioning staff as they wouldn't have had many games over the past 3 years that their best 22 played.  New facilities, massive injury issues.

This is what I keep touching on.

We won a flag out of AAMI park, Brisbane won 3 out of corparoo which is/was division 3 VAFA level, Waverley is nothing special for the Hawks 3.

It isn't the be all and end all in elite performance.

And we still haven't got the equivalent of Cooparoo or Waverley, and we have only won 1 Premiership in 57 years!

State of the art training facilities do make all the difference, especially when you lose finals games by 7 points and 2 points.

What are we missing?

What equipment, infrastructure do others have that we don't have?

2 Ovals, Our own gym not shared with 3 other sporting teams, meeting rooms of our own, indoor training facility at the same location, not 40km away in Cranbourne, ice baths that can fit more than 2 people, pools that again we don’t share or have to book with others, physiotherapist rooms bigger than a broom cupboard…and meeting rooms and offices for more than 1 coach.……and administration in the same building.

So we have everything we need to prepare our players spread over 2 facilities.  I get it not ideal to share and travel but really we have what is needed to prepare our players.

I was at our new training base on saturday. I had a runner in the last.

It's still a fair way off the benchmark levels being set by many competirors across the land

Especially the bigger clubs in Vic and even the Doggiy's facilities.

For 'some' players in the trade / draft window, the differences could be the tipping point between choosing  us as their preferred option (especially vs others also in a Premiership window).

As George pointed out, the line between making and PF or GF can be a matter of just two goals or less!

Missing one VG to top line player (or more!) as a result of not being 'at the level' could end up being the difference between getting there or not.

Those sound like eerily like excuses.

We have enough as 2021 showed. The club can take its time to get the right facility.

But that's the point which you've missed completely RP.

You don't want to give any potential future VG players or stars that might be on the fence (and their managers), any 'facility' reasons not to pick us over the oppo (be it MFC, Detroit Lions, Lutton Town etc).

I am well aware of the time factor.  It's been 38 years of waiting as we watch club after club pass us by.

And?

This is still the major failing of this club over the last decade. For the vast majority of the time the silence is deafening. Dates come and go. I have every confidence at the next AGM it will be raised and the confidentiality card will again be played. Does anyone know if there are any time lines for the Caulfield redevelopment? If it is waiting for  state government funding it will be another ten years as they are up to their eyes in debt.

I am aware of the point, but it is somewhat mooted by the fact that Langdon, May, Lever, Hibberd, and Brown are all players that wanted to come to the club and became premiership players.

You are welcome to wring your hands with this but I don’t care. We should always strive to have the best facilities we can have now and into the future but we have enough to continue to be a successful club and attract and retain the best.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
