The saying "who gives a [censored] about vflw" also comes to mind

well, get used to it

the melbourne football club does give a [censored]

it's in keeping with the 'whole of club' approach - we run four teams, and will continue to do so for as long as we exist

Sure they could, but you know they won’t.

Melbourne was a much better city before the Casino went in

The Gov .. all of them, love gambling, love tobacco, love alcohol.

Only have to judge by actions ( inaction ) and all that taxation revenue.

Very naughty of the fun police going around pointing guns at heads making people do these incorrigible things. Bastards !!

Players have it too soft these days, these were my first club rooms at South Croydon

Is VFL and VFLW even part of the MFC? I've lost track over the years, did we officially take over Casey (I guess when they changed from Scorpions (?) to Demons??)

Yes they did.

But they created Revenue for the Club and they were never illegal, so unless we could find another stream of income, i was always suprised we got rid of them so quickly

I think the AFL told Clubs to do so

Aye, and you try and tell the young people about that today ... and they won't believe you!

Except that Carlton, Essendon, St Kilda and Richmond still have them.

We envy you @No. 31 , at least you guys have a place to spray paint.

It was certainly a big part of it but not the only issue...

Crown fed the entire South Melbourne precinct with investment. Without it, it might still be a wasteland. Love or hate gambling and the casino, it has transformed our city for the better.

Disagree

Before the Casino rolled in i felt safe walking the streets of the CBD 24/7..

I worked a lot of nights so would often go into Melbourne at 3-4am for a few nightcaps.

Very soon after Crown went in that all changed…

i might suggest that this is correlation and not causation. although i do agree with you re casino. a more soulless place doesnt exist.

It almost happened overnight

Asian Big time Gamblers and that’s when the knives started appearing on the streets

I walked the CBD for years before Crown went in

Dance Parties in warehouses people didn’t know even existed, Crown changed the whole landscape

Docklands Stadium comes to mind

It was very much wokey virtue signalling by the MFC. There was no compulsion to do so.

Gambling can be a problem without doubt. It's also a personal decision.

As a business decision... it's dubious that we benefit.

If we still had PJ as a CEO or had had a competent CEO it wouldn't have mattered. Pert failed to capitalise on the bonanza of a flag. If the commercial team had held a fundraiser before the start of 2022, they'd have probably raised whatever we need for Caulfield...

You have to live your values a bit. As the club said at the time, gaming is not our core business, and whilst gaming was imperative in the past, we need to grow our football-related income. Pert had a golden opportunity to do that and sat on his hands.

We need to look at ways to grow the business and not also contribute to destroying lives through gaming. It's not woke, it's corporate responsibility.

I have virtually no interaction with the club but bumped into Pert one day, and told him how happy and appreciative I was to see a premiership after 57 years of support. He said , yeah and how good were the girls winning too.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
