The greatest year of my Demon supporting life by a mile. I have posted various reflections in numerous topic forums over the years. Those last 8 weeks...........!!!!!

I had to fight back the tears of "anguish" and "bewilderment" in the dying seconds of the Preliminary Final, my brain could not accept what had just happened, so near and yet so far, we were all over the Hawks on that day.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peter Moore and David Cordner weren't on the list as well as a few others in that photo, so not the 1987 team photo

They are wearing the navy blue (1987 - present) rather than the royal blue (1975 - 1986) and @Supermercado's Demonwiki lists both players as on the list in 1987 *.

* not saying because it's on the internet it must be true.

They were.  Moore tore a hammy mid way through the season and that was the end of him.  Cordner was sent to the Swans with Adrian Battiston in 1988. It's definitely the 1987 team.

Who remembers the St Kilda game at Waverley that year?

It was a very significant game in 87’

I was there but can;t remember much of it.

Peter Moore definitely played in ‘87

he was overlooked late in the year and didn’t play September

Jimma took his spot

I have already conceded that.

Makes you cringe a little in disbelief - how could Northey assemble such a talented team - and talented, it was - legendary players and capabilities almost across the board. Northey was capable of bringing out the best in his charges, ice-cool and demanding of a certain standard of contribution. I think he coached Redan, in Ballarat, as well where considerable success was achieved repeatedly. Over a couple of years, Northey was the ideal coach for that crew and a tactician of the first order. We wuz robbed that season...

It would have been handy to have Lyon and Connolly in the finals, if they weren’t Injured.

Also, we should have played Dirty Dave Williams in the prelim.

Might have been handy to have Gerard Healy if he hadn’t defected the year before.

Unfortunately that round 22 win is still the highlight of my lifelong Dees support. I was too young to remember ‘64.

Give credit where credit is due. Not to take away anything from Swooper but Barassi assembled that list and mostly did it the hard way. Came in 1981 on the condition Ray Jordan came across to coach U19’s & Reserves. The core of that team came through that system or were recruited by Barass.

Fully agreed - Ray and Ron did the spotting I recall as well as the gameplan and skills development. Widely successful across a whole team. Swooper did hold them together, pushing on with the doctrinal emphases of their recent past.

Yes indeed  that run of games up to the finals, the feeling after beating the dogs, on the ground with other supporters and even later back having a beer. Everyone listening to the Geelong game,  a real high,  The opposite at Waverley watching as the Hawks ran the ball down to Buckenara  then the mark and big penalty to put him close enough,  just knew he would kick it. watched it off his boot from the other end. Couple of my friends cried that day.   2020   Come on Dees !!

Alan Johnson was another who would have been handy that day

And Tony Campbell should never have picked. For any game, let alone the prelim.

it brings back wonderful memories .We had to win the last 6 on the trot which we did including that epic last game at Footscray Then the 2  finals cakewalks and finally the tragic end .1987 was an incredible ride .I doubt I will ever see the building of momentum like that again .

I see Steven Icke in WJ’s photo.

j don’t think he played in the finals...did he?
I really admired that guy as one of the most gutsy players I’ve ever seen.

Its a shame that we only sorted ourselves out  the very season Robbie Flower finished up.

Had he been a few years younger we would have won a flag or two between 88-90.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
