Dont know the real reason for this, but im happy to Blame Goodwin.

:)

Goodwin's biggest problem was letting Jack Watts go thereby allowing the status of whipping boy to be transferred to himself.

Instead he plays VDB who could barley move on Sunday, had a whopping 1 kick and had the awareness of someone who'd been plucked off the street that morning and played their first ever game of football.

We're losing games on Thursday nights.

We are losing games Thursday nights, for sure. Such nights are preceded by seven days and six nights of total confusion, absolutely no responsibilities and unresolved basic issues and skills that question the smarts of our Coach. It's not the players, it's the instructions and preparation that they have  been obeying.

At the moment we are not playing well,   that's clear , The first quarter against Carlton proves we can control a game and win the ball.

The mindset of the players went to mush half way through the second,

The job of the coaching and Football Departments  is to get this bit above the shoulders as right as their fitness.

The buck stops at the top,   always has always will,

Donald in the US believes that.  and so do I.

I can or will support the Dees whatever but its easier emotionally and financially, when the WIN games and not play ****ely and win by one point.

Don't expect to win but looking forward anyway, I would like to see Harley running around. Thursday Selections most important again the senior coach's responsibility.

Go Dees.......

Crikey,  Goodwin virtually said Harley was given his first game because Hannan, Kozzie and AvB weren't available.  Vastly different from the praise and excitement when Harley was first selected.  Not sure which set of comments to believe.

Would imagine the latest comment would be rather deflating for Harley as it sounds like he hadn't earnt his selection in round 2.

Our esteemed coaching staff  want the most gifted player on the team to work on areas of his game.

The guy is almost 28 for [censored] sake and barely played in years, how long do they think he has left?.  Play him now.

takes a while to learn the mfc forward bomb the ball

No way that they pick a half fit Harley to protect the other 3, that is absurd. You'd go gently, gently with him well before AVB and Hannan.

If fully fit, there is that much daylight between Harley and those guys, even Kozzie with all his excitement and near misses

I think he needs to work on his inside 50 turnovers before he’s considered for selection again.

It's truly baffling. Player management and development at the club is poor at the moment. AvB clearly wasn't up to AFL level either and had 10 less disposals than Bennell and less impact too. Does the same thing happen to him now? Gets dropped and given the message you were only picked because others weren't available and you're not actually up to it.

Knowing our luck Harley will build fitness and be fully fit finally and then walk at the end of the year to a Hawthorn or the like. *MFCSS kicking in*

I hope we see Harley at AFL level again soon. He just needs gametime into his legs and will contribute even when not at full fitness as we saw in round 2.

Be interesting to see what the selections are for this weeks match...

I would love if we got the same scrutiny by the media & the general public as a team like Collingwood sometimes. The team plays poor, the coaching staff make weird selections & nothing gets said about it outside of the Melbourne fan base.

if Collingwood had this roster & were playing as poorly as us the media would be howling down on us & calling for the sacking of Goodwin. We really need this kind of treatment for the club to get anywhere.

And there it is.   Suspect and criticise everything.  Our very own MfcSS,

Goodwin "We are continuing to work on ... his contests and defensive elements of the game that is required within his role. But he has missed a lot of footy, so our expectation is that he is not going to be perfect in that space but he does bring something unique to our team."

I was pleased Harley got through his first game and he has talent but he also has zero defensive skills on that showing. He wandered around by himself and refused to pick up a player

Good that he has been called out.

This season is showing layers won't lay, unless they do the team thing, first, second, and foremost.

Sounds like he wont play this week either. Really bad. Work on areas of his game??

You could say that with most of our players week in week out. We have players who have been making the same errors for years and guess what... They still get games! Has anyone ever seen Jack Viney give of one first option, Nup tries to beat tackle after tackle then what??

Really poor even by MFC Standards!

I like to have a bit of fun while also talking seriously.

I am all for the club instilling more disciplines now, and onward;  We have better depth and most skill areas covered with reasonable talent.

So making players work for better levels and expectations,  it's about time we were in a place like this,  to instill better habits.

This has signs of other talented fwds without defensive skills that Goodwin tried to convert and in the end they were forced out, one way or another.  While there were other 'reasons', I'm thinking:  Hogan, Watts, Garlett (may yet happen to Weideman).

I hope that one day our coach will set up to maximise each player's strengths while neutralise their weakness rather than try and make them something they are not.

Maybe, Goodwin should apply the same standards to our other mids that he applies to Harley!

A lot of the media were calling for the sacking of Buckley and Hardwicke for a couple of years, but the clubs held firm and backed their men.

Ditto Mark Thompson and Mick Malthouse at Collingwood. And Alistair Clarkson, too.

Just shows what can happen if you don't get all jittery and succumb to the outside noise.

This!!!

YEP exactly plays too many favs, Harley B HAS more skill in his sweat , than most of our list!

Well I don't think I can argue against these points,  but "work for better levels and expectations," needs to be applied across the whole club.

Not just the players but admin, the management side, supporters, Selectors and Coaching.   I actually think Goodwin needs help, perhaps he should be overall Director of coaching but have someone help him on the Game Day.  Hells Bells, if I can see a problem with the way we play on any particular day. Then Goodwin should have been able to see it coming days before and made plans to mitigate the problem, then something else to turn to.   Not just rely on game plan A.

"while also talking seriously."   not sure this is a site where one can talk too seriously ,  mostly one eyed rot,  but some supporters are much more attuned to footy than i am or was. All I could do on the footy field was run,    all day though. Not sure I thought much about why I was running to any spot, at the time. Not much has changed now I watch from the stands or TV for the last 30 years.

Good Luck to us on the Weekend, 14 against us in the Age and only one for us.  We are a chance on those odds.

And I hope Harley plays and kicks 5 goals

Maybe he should also apply it to the other forwards who rarely lay a tackle.

Tommy for example, is looking more like Dawes every outing. The only tackle he gets is when an oppo player runs into his arms.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
