WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BENNELL

Featured Replies

The club must now tear up the contract offer for next year.

He’s made an absolute fool of Goodwin and Mahoney who gave him the lifeline and also cost us $50k of soft cap.

I don’t even know which way to go on this!! [censored] I am angry that it's happened, but being in Queensland with [censored] all covid restrictions, I just can't empathise with his position. 50k...[censored].

I won't be angry with the club if they give him another year but it should also be taken into account with the negotiation of a new deal, call it a way of imposing the fine retrospectively. Instead of giving him $250K we give him $220K (or whatever the bottom end contract number is), I think one year and on an extremely tight leash is ok and perhaps we put in a get out no pay out clause should he infringe again.

I get what your saying but I was under the impression that all COVID fines are just reductions in the clubs coaching soft cap for next year. Either way I still think the club just needs to get rid of him.

He was an outstanding talent in his first few years. He’s not now. He looks scared of the contest, worried about new injuries. He hasn’t got his burst of speed any more. He doesn’t tackle and it looks like he’s avoiding contact. He’s still got great skills. I can imagine the frustration of having the skills, speed, ability to break open games taken away by a bad run of injury, and then to be locked in a hub and not picked to play. Also, extended family is exceedingly important in indigenous culture. Being separated from family and not even playing would be devastating for him. I hope the club gives him another chance.

He was given his third, fourth, fifth chance?

Took it for granted and can't be trusted. He's done, tear up what's remaining of his contract, rid him of his AFL privileged life, and delist him!

If the allegations are indeed correct then those posters who had consistently opined that Harley had a huge upside for very little cost were a long way short of the mark .His listing has been a disaster .I will make two points .Firstly Harley has never got over his injury and was never ready to play .He couldn't walk unaffected much less run .Secondly Freo and Ross Lyon tried all in their power to mitigate his off field behaviour but in the end just threw in the towel  as it was all too hard .MFC was arrogant and/or naive enough to believe it could turn this all around in a preseason .Did the club question why no one else was interested .? Harley took a spot on the list was given a lifeline which he has now thrown in our face .  Despite its  spectacular lack of success MFC  has always been a good football citizen and i am hugely disappointed by  these turn of events .

Probably just cost a staffer at the club their job.  Thanks Harley.  You couldn't wait one more day?

A statement from someone who's filthy and seeing all of his off field work in terms of financially stability going down the drain.

And the ‘bad citizens’ go on winning: Meth Coast, Collingwood, Richmond.

It is a very disappointing outcome when all appeared to be tracking well. I am hopeful that we would continue to support Harley as part of the Melbourne family. I help thinking about the loss of Liam Jurrah. I realise that football is a business but we are all human beings and are all flawed.

Almost sack Immediately but in retrospect let full story play out Just!!!

Ok ill sleep on it but geez this club is running outa chances

AFL inconsistency at play again.

They suspended half of Collingwood's $50,000 fine for the Buckley/Sanderson covid protocol breach even tho it was their second offence; they had a prior when Sidebottom was suspend.

Ours is also a second offence so don't see why we should be penalised more than Collingwoood for similar situation.

Goddammit Harley. Why?

I hope we will continue to be supportive and stay the course. He has made great strides to turn his life around and people will have blips. A back-slide doesn't equate to a lost cause - and I feel for the bloke that he moved to Melbourne for a settled family life and ended up in a hub back in QLD. Yes, I know that the majority of you have been stuck in lockdown as dutiful citizens - it doesn't mean that you can't have empathy for other people's life circumstances.

Was involved in a junior club where a young man did a disgusting thing ([censored] on the water bottles), lynch mob wanted him out.

Point I made was, if you kick him out, there is no support, no learning and resentment. Better to do our job and have a crack at leading and mentoring.

Not saying he should get off scot free, and he could leave of his own accord, but MFC could show both leadership and. compassion here, especially until all is known about the situation.

Ok lets see

Tom Browne isn't renowned for facts, rumours is his game.

Gee, if it was as innocent as Jay Clark's tweet it is incredibly sad state of affairs and not sure it warrants the penalties imposed on him or the club.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
