Max Gawn Cleared of Major Knee Damage

Featured Replies

pity bill mitchell, famed south melbourne trainer, isn't around any more. knee ligament strains were his speciality, would only miss 1 maybe 2 weeks.

The silver lining is that it ensures that Luke Jackson gets more quality game time in practice matches.

Preuss will be the #1 in Max’s absence but I think Jacko will have plenty to gain in the interim.

Pleased with this end result,  just as pleased I did not read it until now.

Be positive Pruess and Jackson        show us your best  in the lead up to the season opener.

For selfish reasons did not want the big man playing in that benefit match either.

They might all want to play  but there will be one or two injuries in that game and it could curse the year.

This appears  4 to 6    some reason to smile at least.  His leg aint broke !

Go Dees 2020 !!

My father used to play for the swans and used to swear by Bill Mitchell. Said he was a miracle worker.

My father didn’t play sport but went to Bill Mitchell who cured a back problem. He said that Mitchell identified the issue before he walked into his rooms as he had watched him through the window as he was approaching from outside. Swore by him.

That said, there must be plenty of doctors and physios etc these days who know what needs to be done to get Max across the line in good shape and in good time.

Bill Mitchell had rooms in Ivanhoe in 1969. I was a 17 yo.Dad took me there.Bill took one look and said " here's a boy with a bad back, lay on the table,"and with one touch,I felt a movement and it was fixed.Turna out I had a twisted muscle. He couldn't charge because he wasn't registered or licenced or whatever but you were told the donation cost would be such and such.

As your attorney, I advise you to take a hit from the little brown flask in my shaving kit.

How do folk who strain their knee like this actually keep fit during rehab? Is it just upper body stuff? Are there any ways to keep cardio fitness up while it heals?

As soon as acute symptoms have settled (often more to do with bone bruising than soft tissue damage) they can start linear non-weightbearing activity, i.e. bike, water running. Then some alter-G, and back into full running. The time (and potential delay) for MCL is its readiness for transverse, lateral and rotational activities, i.e. non-linear running. It’s all a function of time and nature. Max will have excellent base fitness, so that shouldn’t cause extra delay.

Was Josh Mahoney sitting on Max's knee when he made this statement?

The major word there is "hopes"

I don't quite know how to take all this.  Very greatful that it wasn't a full rupture, good that it only looks like being a month or so recovery and it's a definite positive to have a top notch resource like Darren Burgess, but there is a part of me that wishes they would take a conservative recovery route, take no chances and aim for a Rd 2 or 3 comeback.  That said, I'll be a lot more comfortable with him playing Rd 1 if he plays the 2nd preseason game.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
