And honestly that is just fine.
It is such a lottery this year, particularly with the Victorian kids. Somewhere hidden in the rest of the bunch are the draft bolters who missed that last year of footy this year. The Clayton Oliver or Luke Jackson who were not close to a first round selection only reveal their true talent late. Our job is to identify those kids. I’m backing Taylor to nail at least one of the 3 picks

In relation to the Dees

I like what the Dees have done. They're paying for their picks in credit. They should get a nice player at that spot of the draft - would Tom Powell or Brayden Cook get through? Finlay Macrae is probably off the board but is a sneaky chance.

Question about Perkins sliding to our first pick

Don't think he'll be there then, Perkins. Would be absolutely staggered. Looking more and more like a top-12 pick as we get closer to it.

On Cook to Adelaides 2nd round

Cook will be a chance if he gets to the Crows. St Kilda also in the mix for him at their pick just before Adelaide gets in at the start of the second round.

On O'Driscoll

Nathan O'Driscoll has plenty of fans among club land and could be picked inside the first 15 of so as a tall midfielder. he has tested well athletically as well and played some senior footy. For me he probably fits a bit after that but he will play some AFL footy next year and has a body that's ready to go.

On Carroll

I think Jack Carroll fits in somewhere between 17-25. Midfielder who works through traffic well and also can play across half-back.

On Winder in relation to Lions pick 25

Winder would be a bit early for me at that spot, but he did have a good season and put himself on the map in the WA colts competition. His composure has been compared to that of Shaun Burgoyne.

Mids around the tigers pick/early 2nd round

The midfielders potentially in that mix for the Tigers would be Powell, O'Driscoll, Carroll, Macrae, Trew. Also Zavier Maher and Sam Berry have their fans in the 20s part of the draft and are different players but both with some power.

On Cox

Nik Cox may struggle to get to the Pies' first pick at 14 although I think he'd be a very good chance to be snapped up then. A few other clubs before that will take a good look at him, including Essendon.

And my smokey draftee Conor Stone

Stone is definitely one to keep an eye on late in the first round and early in the second. Has some interest at that part of the draft and I dare say he would have played some really good footy this year in the NAB League. Has shown he can be a goalkicker.

Interesting. Really hoping for Jack Carroll.  Sounds more likely that we could get like a “18/19” Brayden Cook, Zavier Maher, then perhaps even “28” Isiah Winder or Eddie Ford. That’s a good outcome.

Was interesting that Cal reckons Ford sits somewhere in the pick 35 range. Can't quite work out why he's ranked so low, has some v good traits.

Just watching the Eddie Ford highlights - not sure he's the right type for us but gee he looks good.

Great hands and has a serious swagger about him.

If true then our pick 50 will be a super late pick. Still hoping we will package it up to move up into the mid first round otherwise it wasn't a great move to trade it in.

I thought that it would come in a bit due to clubs matching bids, but by my calculations it will only end up coming in about 5 spots to pick 45.

I have a gut feeling that we will bid on Brisbane's academy prospect Blake Coleman with one of our first round picks, he's a very similar player to Kozzy and would be great for forward pressure and x-factor if a bid wasn't matched. The bid would come much higher than Brisbane would expect so maybe there's a chance they don't match as they would lose pick 25 and they have a few other academy prospects later in the draft. Cal Twomey also mentioned yesterday that he has interest in the late first round which just happens to be where our picks are and JT's love for Kozzy last year I could see him liking a similar player. 

Another interesting one is Sydney's academy prospect Errol Gulden and whether they'd match a bid if we bid on him. He will be around our range and Sydney's recruiting manager on The Road to the Draft podcast said they were no guarantee to match a bid on him if they thought it wasn't worth it. He's another lively small forward who can play midfield or half back as well. However out of those picks in-between our picks, the Bulldogs will certainly lose their pick with the Jamarra bid coming in the top 5, Hawthorn is a chance to lose their pick with a bid for their academy boy Downie expected to come around pick 20 so that is touch and go. As mentioned earlier Brisbane could lose their pick with talk of a bid for Coleman coming in the late first round. Then there is also talk Gold Coast might just not use their second rounder at all because they don't have enough list spots. That would leave just GWS, St Kilda and Adelaide * 2 in between our picks 19 and 28 allowing for us to probably take 3 guys we rate really highly.

 

I see the Tigers will be getting the son of Maurice Rioli with a father son pick.

 Not sure how highly rated he is but the sooner the father son rule, academies, points systems and the rest of it is scrapped and we have a real draft, the better.

Agree BDA. Scrap all bar the F/S rule. I believe such clubs should be allowed to recruit players under F/S, however there should be no discount applied. They get the choice of matching or not.

I dislike the advantages the clubs with real academy's get, but the advantages for the league as a whole is too much to abandon them.

The AFL have got the marketing right these days in NSW and QLD in regards to the kids. There were junior AFL leagues set up in the off seasons years ago, meaning kids didn't have to give up the NRL and could dabble in AFL. All of a sudden there are a heap of kids with more of an interest and lot realise they are more suited to this league. With a few generation changes there will be far more interest and we will have a much larger pool.

There has to be a vested interest in the clubs training these kids, so unfortunately I think they are here to stay. Or the AFL finances them independently of the clubs but I can't see that happening.

There will be changes to the NGA academys though. So the other clubs will be pulled back a bit.

Really good points made here. And yes a bid for Coleman is not to be ruled out.  It would force the Lions into consideration of keeping Coleman or Crozier.  Also Gulden is a great runner and very skilled.  It’s a shame that the Swans have their academy zone (a very biased draft) as Gulden would be a good get. Again JT might make them have a think. 

Few random thoughts.

Last year our draft documentary highlighted our surprise as top 10 fancy Devon Robertson drifted outside of the first round. Our efforts to trade up to the opening pick of the second round to secure him revealed itself to be futile with teams offering future firsts to get it done. With an unknown group such as this one that potentially could see a large variation between club rankings, we are potentially well placed to pick someone we rate in the top 10 despite our first live selection likely to be in the early 20's.

Likewise, we are in a fairly powerful position of taking our preferred player and selling pick 19 for a future pick or combination of picks to a team that may want to get into the first round. Collingwood is the obvious example with an already stated desire to add another selection with perhaps added incentive if McInnes hasn't been bid on.

Outside the top 5 players, it wouldn't surprise me to see some "bolters" picked earlier than expected and to see a couple players slide further. Well, slide from the best educated guesses we can come up with at this stage anyway. With reduction in list sizes, reduced draftee exposure and some clubs not taking multiple picks, I wonder if we're going to see a larger emphasis on needs than talent earlier than we are accustomed. Conversely the opposite may be true and clubs might want to mitigate risk and take players with best evidence of talent as a means for projecting likely success.

I'm finding this draft genuinely fascinating.

Finally, Taylor is not afraid of selecting a player from left field. I'd imagine we'll see that yet again, perhaps even with one of our early selections.

Given we have three picks in this draft that all occur before we took Rivers last year, and the gun Rivers appears to be... I’m confident JT will find us some real value in this draft.

I can't see Richmond taking Laurie with their abundance of small forwards, I think he'll definitely be there at our picks. I also think we'd be taking Poulter over Mitchell if he's still on the board.
