Winder looks like he has a ton of X-factor and could be an absolute gun, what I've heard is that he needs to work on his defensive pressure which kinda reminds me of Sydney Stack with his attributes. Another I like is Jake Bowey who is only 175cm but seems to be considered top 10 for skills and is super zippy and agile, and can play forward and midfield, sort of like a slightly smaller Shai Bolton. I'd still have Laurie ahead of both but if he's off the board by our picks I'd like us to take a small forward with one of the picks and one of those 2 would fit nicely.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I think Salem has the tools required.  But in 2019 when we are crying out for 2 wingers and the coaches refuse to play Salem in those roles, you have to figure they have made a decision for whatever reason that he isn't suited.

I would be shocked if that reason was that we have no half back flankers to play Salems role.

Even as typing this I realise how often Goodwin has done this though!

BAMF and Gawndog98

I reckon Salos last half of 2020 was as good a block of games ( like in early 2018 I think it was) he has played in the Red and Blue.

GF98 got it right about impacting and influence  And  these 6/8 games he was busy and productive plus looked to run harder had much more urgency and hit up forwards and even scored a couple of goals.

He almost played a midfield role in style but launched himself off HB with great effect.

I believe he could/should be either on the wing or HF flank In 2021. For all of the above reasons and his elite disposal by either foot finishes his upgrade  to B+ or A - player along  with Langers.

Msybe Baker boils be tried at HF If Salem hoes to the wing.

On the defensive side without Salem IMO Locky at BP on the small and Hibbo Rivers Smith Lever plus Jordan and possibly Sparrow ( not Harmes) can play HB on various types. Even Baker could  be tried on HB.

Our coaches must be more adaptable and  hopefully Yze can implant this in Goody moving forward this next season.

Going by the highlights only and having not seen any of these players...

Macrae was a bit underwhelming.

Poulter was the most interesting, has great awareness and not afraid to take the game on.

Anyway, looks like we should pick up a couple of good kids in this draft.

I saw Isiah Winder play senior footy v East Perth on the WAFL TV and immediately thought he was a very good fit for us. Great skills. Excellent pace. Dynamic with the footy. Could play half forward or half back or yes even on the wing.

What we need.  Pace and skill. That’s it for me. I want runners. I want to take our game to match the Tigers transition of the footy.  We get the footy (Trac, Clarry, Viney, Harmes, Brayshaw,Sparrow) but lack the outside run.
Langdon and Rivers have added this in 2020.  But we need more.

The top targets

Jack Carroll. East Freo.  I saw him last year and put his name down. Great skills and run. Fit beautifully on the wing opposite Langdon. Teammate of Rivers and Jackson at East Freo colts. Give JT the pick and “Get him in”.

Archie Perkins. Sandringham.  Showed in 2019 that he’s got pace and class and moves through traffic similar to Pendlebury.

Eddie Ford. Western Jets. Stood out as underager in 2019. Best jets player since Callan Ward! Played well in futures game on the G.  Good size at 188cm and has the pace and tenacity. Definitely AFL traits.

Jack Ginnivan. Bendigo. Another skilled player especially across half forward. Think Connor Rozee type. Creates and runs.

Brandon Walker. East Freo. Another NGA zoning player to Freo.  If he’s not gone, I’d push the button and make the kid. A skilled runner who delivers the footy lace out. I think will be a Tim Kelly type player.

Others in perhaps the later part of the draft at 50+
Brayden Cook.  Sth Adelaide.
Nick Stevens. Rebels.
Isaac Wareham.  2019 Rebels (Got injured last year and missed being drafted).
Patrick Walker. Tassie.
Harry Sharp. Rebels.
Joshua Clarke. Eastern.

Three of these blokes on board will definitely help our run and skills and corridor footy return.

I haven’t changed my view over the last few months.

Wanted to again highlight Eddie Ford from Western Jets. He played a good game in the Futures match in the G in 2019. Very strong at the footy. Great mark. Evasive. Skilled. Apparently the best player at the Jets since Callan Ward (as good as Rayner was one description). Half forward to start but definitely has midfield elite qualities.  Unfortunately we didn’t see him this year as he would have been a standout. JT would have him on list short list imv.

I'd like to see Jordan developed into a half back flank, he has a really nice kick I'm not sure why he has been playing as an inside mid when it's going to be really hard break into that midfield for him. I also think Hunt could be thrown back to push Salem up the ground but my number 1 preference would be to draft a kid like Carroll who can basically slot straight onto a half back flank with Riv, Winder could also play it very effectively too.

The last few years the AFL web-site has been very disappointing to say the least, it's like we are back in the 90s, in how they run the site.

Although it has info, on the top ten, it seems there is a lack of info, for all the players who will be going past the second, thrid round of the draft.

Years ago they would have the clubs and their logos, with their picks, and heaps of information on up in comming players.

Thank goodness for all on Demonland for taking the time to give all of us the infomation for this years draft, it's very much appreciated.?

Yes, I know they're highlights (so fairly superficial) however Ford looked very impressive. Creative, made tackles stick, good in the air and seemed to kick well off both feet.

From the Herald Sun

AFL Draft 2020: The top 30 prospects from the NAB league

18. EDDIE FORD

(Western Jets/Vic Metro)

Forward, 189cm, 83kg

Ford plays taller than his 189cm stature due to his exceptional vertical leap, topping the charts at the Vic Metro combine (94cm). The Jet regularly took flight last year and has strong hands overhead and good speed. The forward was looking to transition into the midfield this season, requesting vision of Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe from the Dockers to help improve his midfield craft. He goes up a gear in big games, highlighted by his hot start to the All-Stars clash on Grand Final day, finishing with two goals and 20 disposals.

19. ZAVIER MAHER

(Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country)

Midfielder, 185cm, 82kg

A powerful and quick inside midfielder, Maher claimed Caulfield Grammar’s best-and-fairest award after a stellar APS season in 2019. He played just six games for the Bushrangers as a result, showing promise with his contested ball-winning – with 58 per cent of his possessions won in a contest – and burst of speed from congestion. The focus for Maher during the season was improving his endurance, registering a personal best in the 2km time trial at the Vic Metro combine. He also highlighted his speed with a fourth-place finish in the 20m sprint (2.89 seconds).

I think JT has a dozen names already listed for his pick 18,19 options (end up pick 22/23) and who might even be left at 28 (#34/35).

Finlay Macrae**

Archie Perkins **

Jack Carroll**

Nik Cox **

Brayden Cook

Bailey Laurie

Caleb Poulter

Eddie Ford

Isaiah Winder

Nick Stevens

Zavier Maher

and perhaps a possible bid at Brandon Walker.

(** I think these will all go prior to our pick but who knows on draft day )

Here’s the list.

Another late change to some drafting rules!

Until now clubs with Academy/FS/NGA players could only have the same number of draft picks as list spots.  "This has been to stop clubs from stockpiling late draft picks with the intention of only using them to pay for highly rated draftee...which was an early loophole of the live bidding system".

late-draft-rule-tweak

Now, "...the League gave clearance for clubs to use points from draft picks even if they are not going to use the selections to draft players".  ie they can have more draft picks than list spots.

Clubs that will benefit with players in the top 25 of the draft:  Hawks, Bulldogs, Pies, Freo, Swans, Ess, Richmond, Port, Suns.

Drafting of these players has become a farce.  Clubs can draft elite players for a stack of otherwise useless high picks.

One would think the AFL would remove the 20% points discount to offset the advantage this rule change creates

I'm not a fan of rules that advantage only some clubs.  Thankfully from next year NGA clubs will lose much of their priority access to these players.

The Nik Cox highlights are pretty damn impressive if you ask me

Very skinny but seems to have great mobility and able to kick well off both sides

The only thing I find scary is that he looks a bit like a taller more skilled Cale Morton ?

Looks like Dustin Fletcher and Suckling. Set shots using either foot too!

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was.
