dazzledavey36 56,352 Posted November 29, 2019 Posted November 29, 2019 Found this on bigfooty. Pick 22. West Coast Eagles. Trent Rivers . 188cm 83 kg. Utility. East Fremantle. Get ready folks this kids an ascending player he is rising up draft boards at a rapid rate. Thrilled to get the contested ball beast with this pick. Came into the Championships with a bit of a flurry and I was given the "heads up" that he was rated very highly down at Moss Street. East Fremantle Football Club has been a production line for quality midfielders over the years. Patrick Cripps, Paul Haselby, Ben Cousins, Daniel Kerr, Simon Black to name but a few. So when I was told to "watch out" for him by East Fremantle connections...... it was duly noted. Rivers has shown versatility and been played in a variety of positions and whilst at the Championships he played off a half back flank and through the middle I see him projecting as an AFL midfielder. An old fashioned, footballers footballer, who thrives at the coal face, the kids a hard nut. His solid Championships gained him AA selection and as quite a few draft watchers have already noted, keep an eye on him as he goes back to the WAFL and completes the season. First week back in the Colts after the Championship he hasn't disappointed, this morning , with a 26 disposal game, 5 tackles and 3 goals. If he continues in this form in the Colts, I can see his being given a debut in the Seniors very quickly. Bill Monaghan, the League Coach, has never been shy giving young kids a run at the highest WAFL level and I will be watching for this to happen with Rivers. He may well be playing himself into first round draft calculations. When considering who to select here, I was impressed with just who was still available as : Mead ( who will be Port bound as a F/S pick so I left him ), Trent Bianco one of this cohorts best users of the ball by hand and foot, the AA CHB Fisher McAsey, and Dylan Williams were available and considered. In the end I just couldn't pass on Trent Rivers, a home grown talent, who fills a need for West Coast as quality midfield depth is short at the Club. 8 2 3 Quote
bing181 9,474 Posted November 29, 2019 Posted November 29, 2019 Another thing here which is a bit of a Taylor trait, is picking players who may have under-performed in their draft year due to injury and the like. Rivers missed the whole pre-season this year ... and we all know how that plays out. Will be interesting to see just what he's capable of with a pre-season or two under his belt. 3 Quote

Can swing through the midfield as well. Had an outstanding junior career. Sorry, I didn’t mean to quote you but I am new to this game and don’t know how to post something without quoting. What I wanted to say was :- judging from the the earlier photo we can only hope his mother could play footy because he is the image of her. 3 Quote

Mondê 525 Posted November 29, 2019 Posted November 29, 2019 (edited) Love this pick. Bit of Mitch Duncan about the lad, smooth mover. Can see him pushing for midfield time down the track Edited November 29, 2019 by Mondê 1 Quote

Its interesting how little love backmen get when they are drafted. Everyone seems to get super excited about Mids and Forwards, but very few laypeople (i slipped in a PC ) get frothy about players who are drafted as defenders. This kid has me as least as interested as our first 2 picks.... possibly even more. Looks a genuine prospect but ofc only time will tell. Personally quite happy with this pick.( Iknow it makes absolutely no difference if i am happy of not) Edited December 1, 2019 by ding typo 9 Quote

Incidentally, I'm intrigued by Rivers for his potential of rolling through the midfield. 2 Quote

I guess if he played midfield at the champs he would have gone a lot higher. Very happy to have him. Looks good. Good size. Nice skills and looks like he plays with aggression. Dominated playing midfield in the Colts by the looks. 2 Quote

Trent Rivers, I’d like to mention, is one of the most elite kicks in the draft. He’ll be a half back for a little while, but I think he can also fit into the midfield at some stage. Just what we need, Kicking is king. Quote
Lord Ivanhoe 311 Posted December 3, 2019 Posted December 3, 2019 (edited) MELBOURNE Pick 3 Luke Jackson declared to foxfooty.com.au at the draft combine that he wanted to play Round 1. But considering his preferred position (ruck) and the fact a dual All-Australian (Max Gawn) has worked so well as the solo ruckman in recent years, it’s hard to see him getting an opening-round debut against the Eagles. Same goes for Kysaiah Pickett, who has a sensational highlights package but is very raw — and likely to still be very raw by Round 1. But Melbourne’s Round 1 bolter could be its Pick 32 Trent Rivers, whose kicking and decision-making during his draft year was outstanding. The Dees need some class in defence and across the wing — and Rivers has the potential to provide that immediately. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2020-round-1-teams-afl-draft-2019-draftees-most-likely-to-debut-early/news-story/29b72bc2dfd19bd54163f3d5bb9b1018?fbclid=IwAR1waA8996twhiywOYx07zN1zpC1jBojRMaYbPdsQqhmJ76N-bm_kek1Zrk Edited December 3, 2019 by Lord Ivanhoe 5 1 Quote
IWAP 170 Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Was going to be picked up at the start of the 2nd round until Robertson sliding threw a spanner into the works. Reckon this one will end up as one of the steals of the draft. https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-12-05/inside-the-drafts-first-round-twists-turns-bluffs-and-the-big-calls 2 Quote

Nascent 9,345 Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Was hoping for him or Sharp to fall through to us so pretty happy with this pick. Hopefully we can bring Sharp across in the future, would sit nicely on a wing for us. Quote
