AFL are looking at halving half time break. Going to 10 minutes instead of 20 minutes, as reported on 7 News. To take place next season.

I don’t know how much it’d impact players. Would impact my ability to slot a beer at half time.

Will those Auskick games be rebranded as Auskick-X?

Classic AFL media management:
Intern: "The public wont like this"
Gill: "No worries we'll release the news 1 hour before the draft, nobody will even notice"

As a half [censored] tinpot player I hated half time. I always wondered why at local level I always wondered why halftime was maybe 5 mins longer than the qtr time breaks.

At a professional level might hinder the coaches ability to make changes but apparently coaches only have a plan A so shouldn’t matter.

A bit late given that all the pre-season fitness and conditioning programs were designed eons ago for a 20min break.

The AFLPA and the AFL want to shorten games but this seems more a back door way of fatiguing players so that the last quarter opens up.

Lots of other ways to shorten games:  umpries bounce the ball rather than wait for ruckmen to nominate, speed up score review, not wait for broadcasters to run their ads after goals, change the 'time-on' rule etc etc.

Must be <insert 'expert' here> complaining that he struggles to get through 20 minutes of analysis.

Although surprising really given it would probably remove an extra ad break or two. I wonder what the TV execs think of this

10 minutes? That’s not enough time for my regular half-time toilet break.

If it ain’t broke then don’t mess with it. I believe the players need a decent half time break. They are pushed too hard as it is with the modern game. Will lead to more injuries. As if there aren’t enough already.

Imagine the line ups for beers for your 6 mates.

But as a new age guy (a very old NAG) I feel for the ladies.

They'll miss the first ten mins of the second half!

Imaging how long it takes old dee?!

As a teetotaller, 20 to 25 minutes for half time is a waste of time. Get on with the game.

obviously television driven...

suspect the ratings show a lot of drop off at half time particularly on night games.

Strange decision though ...........out of nowhere

One thing is does emphasise is that we are a TV game... no way the stadiums or ground fans would have wanted this

Other than having to put up with much less total half time  drivel on 7 what does this achieve?
I do think 20 minutes is far too long but how about phasing it in to 15 for starters?

As has been mentioned, and I know it is very early pre preseason, but plans are made and fitness regimens commenced based on what has been happening forever .

Still, if there is, for a welcome change, only one unnecessary rule change over this inter seasonal break then I suppose we should be grateful.

They’d come in handy for the drive to Margaret River as well, I wouldn’t have to stop.

Well as Melbourne supporters, we will be put out of our misery 10 minutes earlier.

Sharp objects are a no no. Manual extraction offers the speediest controlled relief. Ensure fingernails are well trimmed.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
