Training for 3 hrs from 9 am.

In rehab, Harrison Petty, Kade Chandler, Aaron Vandenberg and Austin Bradke.

On lighter duties, Sam Wiedeman, Josh Wagner, Jake Lever, Aaron Nietschke, Neville Jetta.

No Bailey Fritsch, Charlie Spargo, Mitch Hannan or Joel Smith.

Oskar Baker walking laps.

Adam Tomlinson and Jack Viney walking and running laps.

Bernie Vince out there helping them.

The warm up was different to last year. It went longer, slower and appeared more inventive and varied. Great to see them working all the muscle groups.

They used GT (thick yellow down the middle) stripped balls for the warm up kicks. Helps see the rotation and flight of the ball.

They were into drills with 3 stations.

The simulation game was handball only disposals with the teams broken into three and the group not competing are wrestling on the side lines.

Then they split into the line teams and rotated around three more stations.

Forwards included Nathan Jones, Alex Neal-Bullen Jayden Hunt and Toby Bedford.

Backs included James Harmes, Jay Lockhart and Kade Kolodjashnij.

Mids included James Jordan, Tom Sparrow, Christian Pettraca, Kyle Dunkley and Ed Langdon.

Last on the field Braydon Preuss, Christian Petracca, James Harmes and Corey Wagner kicking goals together, and Christian Salem, James Jordan and Toby Bedford craft work.

Thought Langdon showed good speed and decision-making in the simulations.

Impressed with Christian Petracca, Tom Mcdonald, Nathan Jones and Michael Hibberd.

Clayton Oliver left the track early. A punter talked to him and the punter told me he said 'he was good, just wanted to leave early'. Noticed he was favouring his left arm.

Heard Oliver has done his shoulder in a tackling drill.....

NOOOOOOO?

Mahoney said at the Info night that we were forced to use 16 players unsuited on the wings this year.  I think VDB and KK out for the year hurt us there.

He said we specifically targeted Langdon and Tomlinson from over a year out for that position and the great thing about them is that they are strong aerobically and don't need to come off and that means we can concentrate rotations on the midfield group.

IMO KK training with the backs looks like he's been pushed out and if he can get up he can fill a deficiency we have back there.

Fascinating to hear Harmes is with the backs. Don't know what to think there.

I seem to recall reading a while ago the type of surgery Oliver had on his shoulders last year made them pretty much bomb proof and almost impossible to re-injure in same way again.

The wing was really a gamble with KK. He’s never played it. Given his concussion issues a back flank where he can see the game in front of him and pick and choose contests is far more sensible. Anything we get from him from here is a bonus. Ideally he finds his best footy and takes over from Hibberd.

Harmes at half back worked against the Roos in round 23. It worked against the Dogs in the game Lever did his knee. It gives us an elite runner who’s strong in the air and on the ground and can attack the game. Might be a few kicking errors but decision making at half back is pretty easy which minimises errors. The Crisp or Vlastuin all around versatile defender.

It also allows Petracca and others to play an attacking skilled midfield role, whilst Viney tags/restricts smaller mids and Brayshaw should get the bigger guys. If that’s not working then an easy swap is Gus to half back and Harmes tagging.

Played round 23 against North down there and looked ok with 32 touches.

If he plays down back, we lose his X-factor in snagging a goal on the run from 50 or taking a big mark inside 50.

Vanders boxing, didn't see the other 2.  Hannan and Spargo not there.

Viney and Tomlinson doing kick 2 kick in goal square.

Must have been very short kicks

Well they were pretty much chip kicks - perhaps down the Northern end would be more accurate; they had to keep out of the way of the backs doing the clearance drill

Anyone know what's going on with Petty?

Missed the last 2 games of the season with a mystery injury and it seems as though he's been in rehab or light duties since returning.

He hasn't played much of anywhere so far DS.  Has another HO fiasco written all over it.

Fiasco feels a bit strong. Disappointment yes, more so for him, rather than the club.

HO,FD, whomever; should rightly back themselves and their medical dept to get great outcomes for individuals and thus the team.

Clearly it's easy in hindsight to shake the fist at the cloud and say "I told you so".

Not that KK is done yet.

Mind, what's your current stance on picking up Harley B?

Why fascinating? Played there and well late last year and BMAC said recently that’s one thing they found Kate last year as a win for 2020 structure so that’s where he was always gonna be! Pinch hit in Mid when required but with Langdon/Tomlinson Vanders & Jordon likely ins next year (Mark my words On Jordon, he’s going to be a designated kicker & will play from R1 All going well)

KK dar from done he’s a quality user and breakaway pace he will have role to play at some stage!

HB (failing a breakdown prior to Feb) will be an absolute revelation and the definitive story of they year in 2020 - Even Balmey said he’s scared at what Harley might do for Red and Blue next year!!!

I'm a gambling (texas holdem & NFL only) / auction man EO.  You weigh up the odds vs likely pay out and if it looks like there's a decent pay off go for it!

Don't mind the Bennell option at all as i think it's lowish risk with a high payoff given his draft ranking/selection when he came into the system.

I guess KK was steak knives with the May deal so as long as we get what was expected from May then anything's a bonus from KK.  As you say though, it would be nice for him if he can get on the park and give it a crack.

That's a copy and paste from doctor google if I've ever seen one.

He had a knee injury IIRC

I thought it was listed as groin.

Either way he was running the boundary at a reasonable pace

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
