Another good session for the young guys

Nev and Steven May were there rehabbing

Joel Smith, Weid, Petty, KK as well

Mostly ball work for whole session with 5 minutes running at the end

All the rehabbers are fine,  just slowly building up to join main group, asked all of them

Work again unfortunately so will post pics on Insta later tonight

Did you happen to spot either vandenBerg or Viney by any chance?

Cheers.

Thanks again Saty.

Any players looking noticeably different other than Preuss?  (bulked up or slimmed down)

Rehab can mean anything. Lever seemed to be in rehab all last year and the year before.... and then I was upset when he played in the middle of rehab!

For May, KK AVB Joel Smith, Weid, Petty and Nev to be in rehab right now after (at least) 70 days off really does not make me believe the glass is half full, Someone set set me straight, surely Im wrong!

I hope Saty is right with his discussion with Nev and May, but it doesn't sound to good if they are still wearing the yellow vests.

Long Pre season though, no need to break them at the start of Nov.

Probably just not at the fitness base of those who have had no post-season issues.  No point having them go hammer and tongs from day one if they don't have a solid base.

Very, very early days for Nev and May anyways - don't think they're expected back at training for sometime.

It is the contact work, they introduce them gradually to it, when you have been out you need the rehab

Clarry 'accidentally' flattened someone today in a drill, but they bounced straight up   couldn't tell who it was because of bib

Whole squad is not back for another week an a half, so the rehabbers can use this time to be cherry ripe to join it

I stood next to Joel Smith, in great nick doesn't  cover it

Will post some pics either tonight or tomorrow

Thanks for the reports Saty.

One thing I've been wondering about is our drop off in skills this year.

It seemed like from the reports pre season last year compared to previous years that maybe there wasn't the level of ball work combined with hard running etc.

Do you think the skill work was at the same level last year as there was in the previous couple?

I remember how people remarked that after Roos took over that a lot of the fitness stuff included ball usage and match simulation.

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree from interstate.

Agree to some extent. You have to be concerned about anyone on the long term injury or rehab list (whatever rehab means).

However, it is only November. And we know nothing of the true state of recovery other than training observers who can see how fit they are, how they run and move.

The question is when will they be right or best guess and when they are right will they be not only back in training but able to build up to full training before next season. You don't want to take risks but at the same time you don't want to have guys back for the start of the season well underdone. The long termers you have to worry about their futures at the club but we also need the young guys like Weed and Petty playing consistently and at full strength.  Our depth is not good so lets hope it is not an issue again next season.

To some extent the status and progress of our injured players will be a measure of Burgess and our medical staff.

Football training is such a chaotic and unpredictable activity with the movements and stresses on the body you'd be mad to include anyone with even the slightest niggle in to ball work in early November. The benefit just isn't worth the risk.

From that list Weid and Nev had surgeries, AVB and KK are dealing with long term issues. I'd like to see May, Petty and Joel Smith back in full training sooner rather than later but let's wait until the main group is back before being too concerned.

The thing that undid us last year was the numbers in rehab all the way through until the start of the season (and beyond). A few guys on light duties in November isn't the same thing.

Both are not due to start official training yet...so I wouldn't be concerned at all.

Pre season is just that

Been watching training for 10 years

Seen players turn up fit, unfit, ripped and overweight

Seen great skills, abysmal skills, horrible drills, innovations that worked and others that didn't

Seen different approaches by different coaches

Every year towards the end pre season everything and everybody seems ready to go, this has not been the case

The track watchers report what we see, no idea, like everybody, what will happen when the games start

What's up with KK? Is it still the concussion? Or another injury?

A bit worrying for the boy if it's still concussion related. I'm worried for his health.

Like admitting to having watched the Footy Show and pretending it was only for the pictures, it pains me to poach from Stuie's self-constructed simpleton temple that is Melbourne Demon News facebook page, but apparently Burgess was was on SEN and said the following, according to a Stuie acolyte:

- 90%/10% on ‘footballing‘ sessions v running sessions over the preseason for the Dees.

- Seniors return Monday week: 4 sessions per week + weights and gym;

- All MFC staff are cognisant of the abilities of first to fourth year players, expectations need to be managed as well as harnessing doubt that younger players may have about their abilities;

- Tracking very well from a preparation point of view with only two players expecting a delayed start (no names given).

Nah, he's fine, like other rehabbers, just putting the work in, just wants a bit of luck with injury, same with Joel Smith

I think rehab is a bit of a misnomer.  It's not necessarily the players who are recovering or rehabbing.  It's the players on modified programs that prevent them from taking part in the main drills.  There are any number of reasons for that sort of thing.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
