pick 3, pick 8 not to be used on players, taken to the draft

But then says trades can occur up until the draft, 'worse case scenario we use pick 3, 8'.

I'm thinking they'll be pushing GWS right up until the draft

'We believe in this playing group'

Outside run was the priority, mentions 15 players on the wing again

Won't talk about who they like at 3 but mentions they have 2 or 3 that they like at that pick

Andy Maher now taking 3 hours to ask a question. Or ask a statement

I think they have made a great move: either GWS will trade 6 and second rounder for 3, to guarantee Tom Green at a later pick or we will bid for Tom Green with 3, forcing GWS to use Pick 6 and giving us an extra top end player to choose from.

So many seem keen to trade 3 to GWS, but what if they then take the player we wanted at 3?

It's a gold star pick. We need to nail it.

The question is, how do we acquire another draft pick? We must draft 3 players, but currently only have 2 picks... something else HAS to happen. Even if it's just Stretch/JHK for pick 70.

Pretty sure we have picks in the 5th/6th/7th round if we need to use them?

But at any rate I suspect Stretch is getting traded to the GC.

We traded our 5th round in the Langdon deal didn't we?

I still don't think we would do this deal if we didn't have something else up our sleeve.

I don't care how highly we rate the top 10 this year and how poorly we rate everyone outside it. You don't trade 3 picks for 1 unless you have something planned.

Alternatively, they have nothing further lined up and value this year's draft much higher than next year. With the bidding next year (that we have no part in), I think it makes a lot of sense to go hard this year whilst the opportunity presents itself.

There's also the potential of 2 years worth of salary cap relief from 2 players that should (!) be of high quality.

Say what you like about our on field performance, but I think our off field and trade performances have been pretty spot on lately.

Sorry Jaded - I hope you know I wasn't calling you incompetent of course... on second read, it might have read that way!!  I was saying there is another option with this trade, and that is that the MFC is incompetent!

I don't necessarily share your confidence about our off-field performance since Jackson retired.  Jury is out for mine.

Or maybe we think 2 picks will get waht we need right now and we can work teh rest out next year. I doubt very much there is a big name coming to our club, in fact im 95% sure. I think what we may do is still split one of those picks.. turn 2 first rounders into 3 first rounders, which can be done right up until and during the draft.

And for those bemoaning we dont have a first round pick next year.. who knows what will happen, we might trade back into the first round next year.. lots can play out. I love having 2 picks inside the top 10 as it stands.

Sounds like we're very likely to draft Cody Weightman which makes me think we should look to split 8 with the Cats for 14 and 17 as he's likely to be there at 14 and we would effectively get a bonus free hit with 17 maybe on jeremy Sharp

Our 8 can slip to 9 (GWS) & possibility 10 (Haw), and Weightman may go as low as 10. It wouldn’t be worth the risk.

Thought we still had pick 79 as our third?

Is Weightman worth a top 10 pick? - last time I checked he was ranked in the late 20's

Not saying he is or isn't - would be interested to hear others views who have actually seen him play

Would have to be something very special to use a top 10 pick given his size

Went to Freo in the Langdon trade I think.

For me that's Serong given he is ranked right up there in the top 5 and we need a quality small forward.

Some are suggesting Weightman but he is ranked much lower than Serong and not sure he is worth a pick 8 unless we split and grab him later with a pick 25 or so.  I haven't seen either so they might both be rising potential small guns and worth it.  Maybe someone on here has seen them up close and able to fill us in a little.

More to go yet.  We can still trade 3 out for 2 top 15 picks plus something next year.

This is where I will forever scratch my head at this time of the year.  This isn't having a direct go at you, Buck, but there seems to be this theory that 2 picks at the later end of the Top 15 are better than pick 3.  I'd be taking pick 3 every day of the week over something like 11 & 15.

Not only that, the theory is that trading away Pick 3 to someone like GWS, so that they can use that pick to get someone, AS WELL AS this Green kid.  So in effect, we are actually making them stronger while diluting our own picks.

It makes absolutely no sense to me, but then I'm not the one on the big dollars sitting in the Football Department.

Weightman is this year’s bolter. In the latest Phantom Draft (below) he is at 12. Have also heard on multiple occasions that the Dees are into him big time.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
