Big risk with knocking back a contract unless you’re 100% certain you’re going to be picked up. Things can change at the last minute.

I would say a contract would be agreed to if that was the case (Newnes decided to become a DFA).

Strange why they'd wait though.... but it is a lot simpler as DFA essentially all you have to do is sign a contract.

I assume clubs will be waiting to confirm what picks they have and how many list spots are left

I did not realise Newnes was available and think it is definitely worth a chat to his management if enquiries into Jack Martin don't go anywhere.

At the right price, I can see him as a defensive wing / half-back. I really think we need to work to have Salem up the field to kick into the forward 50 rather than out of the defensive 50. Perhaps Newnes offers an ability to do that?

Not sure why Newnes thread is not within the Trade and Drafting posts.

Newnes has great skills. Size.  Pace. Running power.  Exactly WHAT WE NEED.

MFC WOULD BE MAD TO IGNORE HIM. SEEMS AN OBVIOUS FIT.

Iwould offer a 3year deal and see what he is after.

Waiting to see some action here.  Clearly a good fit and given the arrival of Hill and Jones, his opportunity at the Saints would be very limited.

A player that would have made our bottom 6 better. i hope they have plan to add another hardened player on the list.

He's another who is a bit 'meh' to me.  Has struggled for a few years now.  I don't think he would make us any better.

The Blues had cap space available for Papley which didn’t eventuate so it would appear they have now used it for Newnes.

Everyone is in raptures about the Saints’ recruiting to date but they’ve lost some handy footballers as well as having no presence left in the draft.

This suggests to me that if a couple of their recruits get injured or don’t meet their expected standards, the club could end up with egg on its face.

Well played Carlton, although I suspect paying newnes more than the saints could offer could impact what Carlton can now offer Jack Martin.

Interesting times ahead.

Carlton keep picking up recycled outside types, when they are screaming out for some inside help for Cripps. Pretty much the opposite of us.

They wouldn't need to offer much, the Saints offered him base salary and match payments, about the same as a rookie I believe. The same as what Nathan Jones is on.

Didn’t Jones reject that offer?

Their recruiting wasn't bad, but I still feel like they're putting lots of faith into Max King.  If he doesn't come good or gets injured, all they really have down there is Tim 'I like it an easy goal Josh Jenkins style' Membrey.  I think recruiting Hill and Dougal Howard were good pieces of business, but they aren't really in the next two drafts and still have plenty of holes in their list.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
