I also worry about midgets inside the top 10, but really, our entire drafting record is why we haven't won a flag since the draft was introduced.

Papley would of been ideal for us as a crumbing forward with occasional bursts in the midfield and better yet we all know what we will get for him if we used pick 8 on him with a second rounder in return. I'm not saying I don't like Weightman, but I think at pick 8 you have to nail those selections and not use them on a smokey. To me he is in the 15-20 range.

If we took Weightman at 8 it seems like we'd be reaching a bit for a type/need rather than best available. I'm hoping that JT and the club just choose the best player available and target needs through trades and free agency next season.

Agree.  Best available and look beyond 2020. Kemp is worthy of longer term vision in what this kid could become. An absolute star.

I’d bid on Green at 3, GWS will match the bid, then I’d take Young at “4”, elite kick and future replacement for either Jetta or Hibberd. With GWS’ pick 6 now moving to 3 and the rest dropping down one, only leaves Adelaide (5), Sydney (6) or Freo (7) that can pick Kemp before our pick 8, I’d be happy with taking the risk and picking Kemp. I wouldn’t be unhappy with Ash at 8 if still available either. ??‍♂️

If he’s a superstar in the making I want him

If he’s a serviceable best 22 player for the next decade I’m happy with the pick, but it’s a shame we didn’t have a chance to get x / should’ve picked y

If he’s a spud I never wanted him

Jason Taylor has high regard for Cody Weightman, but he also rated Spargo as a top 10 player in his draft year and look how that's turned out. Considering Weightman is a smokey it means he is an unknown quantity. You can do much more with Kemp who can play midfield and forward then a 177cm small forward that takes the occasional hanger in Weightman.

Where did you hear this about Spargo? That's the first time I've heard that (he has rated other small players like Lewis Taylor in the top 10). I would be horrified if that is true regarding Spargo.

I know some on here hate stats, but I thought I’d compare Spargo and Papley’s 2018 season since a few really wanted Papley. They were actually quite even.

Papley played 20 games and avg - 1.2 goal, 1.1 behinds, 219.9mtrs at 68.8% efficiency.

Spargo played 18 games and avg - 0.8 goal, 0.5 behinds, 172.4mtrs at 76.2% efficiency.

They were the main stats, I know there's the whole momentum killer debate on Spargo, but I’m happy giving  him a chance to cement a fwd role next year.

I also heard at the time that Taylor (and other recruiters) rated him a top 10 player if he hadn't been injured throughout his junior years.

From memory I think it was JT himself who said that just after we drafted Spargo. But he was basing that on his form before he injured his shoulder. He was averaging something like 130 fantasy points a game playing as a midfielder.

Charlie goes alright. A very good link up player. He doesn't get it a lot yet but when he does, it usually ends up in a score.

His track record suggests he is not good with identifying smalls. Hope we take Kemp.

Maybe a bit of 2nd year blues for Spargo...

And not playing in the position he played, when he was drafted.

I actually think Spargo is a good footballer - he seems to read the play well and generally makes the most of his limited possessions - kicking penetration is an obvious area to try and improve

He played the small forward role in his first season because he didn't have the tank to run midfield

If he can build his endurance and cope with extended time in the midfield I think he can be more than useful

Spargo needed to build up his strength this year.  Sticking tackles is a weakness.  He went backwards in 2019 like every 18-23 year old on our list.  Burgess will have him prepared to have a decent crack in 2020.  If we draft Weightman I’d be really disappointed.  His highlight reel doesn’t look any better than Chandlers from last year.  Not saying he is not a good prospect, but he just does not look a top 8 pick.

Kemp is the player (after Rowell and Anderson) who has the biggest likelihood of being an absolute star. Pace. Size. Strength. Can go forward. Goalkicker

. ****  Dangerfield like qualities. ****

Will miss 2020 but they will only make him stronger and has a whole 12 months in the gym.

Why would you draft a player who will miss the entire first season and then take another to get back to anywhere near where he was prior to the injury?  He's also an insideish mid, albeit a versatile one given his height.

You pick players who will have the better career, not who can play from day 1.

Best talent in 3 but if Kemp is there at 8, I'd pick him.

And as some have noted, if GWS are forced to match 3 with Green, there are only 3 picks before our next one at 9 (5, 7 & 8). A lot of good players in there. Kemp could go through to 8(9) ?

Mahoney traded away our 2020 1st round pick to North , banking on us rising up the ladder next season.

We need to take ready made kids at 3 and 8 who can impact immediately.

Kemp will miss all of 2020.  We will not be drafting Kemp.

Having said that, I would take him at pick 3.  He has star power unlike Young, Ash, Serong, etc etc.   Im just saying that I doubt we will take him as Mahoney and Goodwins (and others) jobs are on the line in 2020

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
