Craig Jennings Gone at Seasons End

I find this the most interesting part of the story...

"Josh Mahoney is conducting a review, sources linked to Melbourne confident the highly regarded football manager is sufficiently independent to identify the issues and make tough decisions."

How can he be sufficiently independent, he runs the department he's reviewing?

What if he's the issue?

Anyway, I sure hope we get this right...couldn't stand another season of irrelevance finishing early again.

It's like the way when coppers commit crimes they are investigated by their peers and invariably found kosher....

Spot on rjay, given he's never played at the highest level he needs to show he has the capability to lead his own team. Chris Fagan is the only current AFL coach who never played at the level, but had extensive experience coaching his own sides before given a shot at an assistant level. Jennings has the reputation across the league as the best analyst of the game, and a great teacher but needs to show he can operate in his own right so he gets to get the opportunities afforded to ex-players.

Clearly his supposed reputation for all this greatness to which you refer, has not resulted in much by sitting next to Goodwin for the last few years.

Hard to notice through all the [censored] whingeing and whining on here and the pathetic need to point score

I watched training, I refuse to accept the pre season as an excuse for some of the appalling performances we have produced this year

They are professional players, if you are fully fit, you play

The point is, surely, some of them WERE NOT FULLY FIT. T.Mac and Viney, just for starters....

Why are we, as a club, so resistant to an external review? Is Pert worried about saving face? We're 17th on the ladder after the no.1 AFL statistics company ranked our list the best in the AFL. External reviews should be welcome as we clearly need some assistance.

What has the 2019 fiasco season got to do with Pert????

Another sign that those who believe the failure of this season is primarily due to injuries and off season surgeries are incredibly off the mark.

Keep ringing the changes.  I would also hope/suggest Josh Mahoney & Jason Taylor need to have a very strong Trade & Draft to secure their immediate futures.

yes they were doing pretty well but I really think the 2018 draft has left us with nothing in the short term and who knows longer term.

They will get a real good look at it this year though. have to strike some gold.

Nothing. I just want him to call for an external review so someone outside the club can point out the deficiencies with the FD.

Thanks for the response.

If it's coming from above, do you think Goodwin would be out the door too if he wasn't signed up already?
I'm wondering whether Pert et. al. extended him because they absolutely believe in Goodwin but not those around him? Or whether they don't believe in any of the coaching staff but are beholden to the 3 year deal for the moment.

Even if Goodwin were only contracted for 1 more year we would not be moving him on.

Interesting link to the fallout of Jennings. Apparently didn't get on with Brendan McCartney.

Regardless of the content that is a terribly written article. Reads like something from a year 7 kid rather than a professional journalist.

Jennings gone

McCartney gone

Rawlings brought back

Plapp de-emphasised.

Chapman hopeless.

But Goody's the man.

Is Goodwin in charge of coaching appointments? Or does that rest with the head of football?

You'd probably have been on the sack Bomber (2006) and sack Hardwick (2016) bandwagons too. Clearing out the assistants and restructuring does not necessarily reflect on the future prospects of the senior coach.

I don't know him at all, but I was talking to someone last week who does. Regards him as a 'good mate' and has reasonable shared footy history.

Totally unprompted by me he volunteered that Goody's a 'control freak' who 'won't listen to anybody'.

There was more that suggests he won't seek or listen to a new mentor figure.

Could be why Jennings ideas weren't heard.

And why McCartny, who calls a spade a spade, was removed from the coaches box and then given the flick.

Carp  on that!

Roos, im told, gave Goody quite some largesse  to appoint 'his' crew. He would have afforded anyone that ability. Had it been Dew they both knew who that  crew would have been. That never transpired  obviously  and the rest is history  .

I think Simons season of appointments  have come to a close ;)

As to Jennings not getting on with Macca...he would have a few mates there .

That’s utter tripe and I’d go as far as to say you’ve fabricated that, or at the very least the person who told you this has.

LOL, yes people bang on here how they want change and as soon as it happens they're still not happy and take it as another opportunity to sink the boots in. Unless they're in the inner sanctum nobody really knows, and won't know until we get a good look at next season.

You're going to make judgements based on the last 2 games?

I never said it did. You're good at presuming for other posters.

It is clearly a reflection of the disfunction/failure of our present coaching set up - against what many of the happy clappers have been saying. I think I have worked out what camp you're in.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
